Two years ago, my son sat me down for a talk. “Mom, it’s time,” he said. “Hear me out: It’s time we got actual TV. And you need an iPhone.”
This funny conversation two years ago marked a change in our relationship. Perhaps for the first time, I began to really listen to John’s opinion about our home technology. Since his reasoning was sound and his suggestions were within budget, I took his advice and was pleasantly surprised with the results.
I’d known for a while that my son understands technology better than I do. On airplanes, he grabbed my phone to put it in airplane mode. He wired the speakers in our house. After something was stolen from our front yard, he picked out, set up, and now monitors our security camera. When my computer died, I took him shopping with me.
He has a busy social life, with skateboarding, basketball, and online gaming. I see our time together reducing and our shared interests shrinking. That’s why I jumped at the chance when a friend mentioned writing technology reviews. When I presented the idea to my teen, he immediately accepted.
It’s changed our relationship in surprising ways. Where he used to get annoyed quickly at my technical ignorance, he’s learned to be more patient and explain things to me in a way that I can convey to an equally unknowing audience. The parent- child dynamic is not only changed; it’s even slightly reversed (颠倒). He’s leading me. I’m asking him for help and advice.
My son has risen to the occasion. He’s taking it seriously, and to watch him mature in this way is an honor. As someone not much of a reader, he now searches instruction booklets. Without any prompting, he’s even emailed and called — yes, made an actual phone call — to customer service or tech support when products weren’t working as expected.
I never imagined being a tech reviewer, but it’s proved to be a valuable way to learn from, work with, and enjoy time with my teen.
4. What did the author think of her son’s advice
A. Worthless. B. Incomplete. C. Funny. D. Practical.
5. What does the author say about her son in Paragraph 3
A. He is skilled at technology. B. He leads a very busy life.
C. He tries to make peace with her. D. He helps with housework.
6. Why did the author accept writing technology review s eagerly
A To make more money to support the family. B. To keep a close relationship with her son.
C. To learn more about modern technology. D. To get some products for free.
7. What made the author feel honored
A. Her son’s patience to explain technical things. B. Her son’s control of the parent-child dynamic.
C. Her son’s careful attitude towards the reviews. D. Her son’s rich knowledge of technical terms.
C
“Can you finish the work by the end of the day ” This question might cause anxiety for many employees. However, recent research indicates that shorter deadlines can actually help some individuals to complete tasks more efficiently and perceive their workload as less frightening.
In a study focused on retirement planning, volunteers completed a brief online survey under two different deadline conditions. One group had seven days to finish the survey, while the other was given 14 days. The researchers discovered that those facing the longer deadline often viewed the task as more difficult. Although participants with the extended deadline initially invested more time and resources, they were also more likely to procrastinate and less likely to complete the assignment compared to those with shorter deadlines.
Recognizing that people frequently deal with multiple deadlines, researchers explored how individuals manage various tasks at the same time. The findings found a mental tendency: individuals often delay important tasks in favor of urgent but less significant ones. For example, many delay routine medical check-ups crucial for health in favor of rushing to a store for a limited-time sale. This occurs because important tasks feel more complex and distant, while urgent tasks provide immediate satisfaction.
These patterns have significant results for managers and others involved in setting deadlines, Understanding these mental processes can help find strategies to enhance task completion rates. Short deadlines for urgent tasks tend to draw attention more effectively, leading to higher completion rates and reduced procrastination. On the other hand, longer deadlines can lead to excessive careful thought or distraction, resulting in incomplete work.
However, it’s essential to recognize that longer deadlines may still be necessary for complex tasks particularly when external factors, such as resource availability or cooperation, require additional time for proper completion. In such cases, a balanced approach is crucial: setting realistic deadlines that account for both urgency and complexity can lead to improved outcomes. By recognizing the minor differences of human motivation, individuals and organizations can develop effective strategies for task management.
8. What does the underlined word “procrastinate” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Finish quickly. B. Put off. C. Start early. D. Do carefully.
9. Why do people tend to delay important tasks for urgent ones
A. Urgent tasks offer instant rewards.
B. Urgent tasks are more complicated.
C. Important tasks are less challenging.
D. Important tasks need multi-tasking.
10. How should managers set proper deadlines to improve outcomes
A. Set all tasks with shorter deadlines.
B. Prioritize resources and cooperation.
C. Balance task urgency and complexity.
D. Extend deadlines for significant tasks.
11. What can be the best title for the text
A. The Role of Urgency in Task Completion
B. Strategies for Managing Various Deadlines
C. Influences of Delay on Work Quality
D. The Power of Deadlines in Task Management

In Hangzhou’s Linping District, a friendly AI assistant named “Little Rainbow” is quietly changing how citizens interact with the government. Powered by DeepSeek-R1, an advanced Chinese AI model, this system handles over 1,000 daily inquiries — from explaining policies to guiding paperwork — with 95% accuracy.
Imagine needing to apply for a student scholarship but feeling lost in complicated rules. With “Little Rainbow”, citizens simply ask questions in natural language, like chatting with a friend. The AI instantly analyzes policies, provides step-by-step guidance, and even fills out forms automatically. For elderly people unfamiliar with smartphones, it offers voice-based assistance, such as helping them manage health code systems during the pandemic. This “one-stop service” saves time and reduces confusion, making government services more accessible.
“Little Rainbow” relies on two key technologies: natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning. The NLP allows it to understand various questions-whether typed or spoken. Meanwhile, its machine learning algorithms (算法) improve through real-world interactions. For example, if a user asks, “How do I report a broken streetlight ” the system not only answers but also learns to predict similar requests in the future.
To ensure reliability, engineers trained the AI using thousands of real cases, covering topics from tax payments to school admissions. Surprisingly, the system can even detect emotional tones in messages. When a user writes, “I’m frustrated with this process!”, “Little Rainbow” responds with patience and extra clear explanations.
Hangzhou’s “Little Rainbow” is more than a convenience — it’s a window into an AI-driven world. As this technology spreads, it challenges us to adapt, innovate, and think critically about its impact. For young learners, understanding AI isn’t just about coding; it’s about shaping a future where technology serves humanity’s best interests.
12. What is “Little Rainbow”
A. An AI handling public inquiries. B. An AI replacing office workers.
C. A tool developing new algorithms. D. A tool analyzing user data trends.
13. How does “Little Rainbow” assist users who express frustration
A. By simplifying smartphone functions for the elderly.
B. By transferring them to human operators immediately.
C. By automatically completing forms without user input.
D. By recognizing emotions and offering clearer guidance.
14. What should we learn about AI
A. AI could replace human labor. B. Coding is essential.
C. Emotion detection matters most. D. Shape AI for human benefit.
15. What is the author’s attitude toward AI systems like “Little Rainbow”
A. Unclear. B. Approving. C. Doubtful. D. Critical.

Patience Is a Virtue
In the Paris Olympic Games, Dutch runner Sifan Hassan realized one of the most outstanding achievements in running history. On the biggest stage in sports, Hassan competed in three events — running two rounds of the 5,000-meter run, the 10,000-meter run, and the marathon — over nine days. ____16____
Early in each race, viewers may have counted Hassan out. While some runners took off quickly to claim front-running positions early, Hassan held back and conserved her energy. She waited to release her final charge right when she needed to — at the end of each race, timing things perfectly to secure a medal. Well, what led to her success ____17____
As a matter of fact, patience is also a feature of a good life beyond sports. Here are some reminders about this often-underappreciated virtue.
I used to run by a field in the winter months that had a sign that read, “____18____” I laughed at that sign, positioned on a barren (荒芜的) field. But as spring approached, the day arrived when I would run past the field, and, suddenly, it was no longer barren. It was full of wildflowers of various colors and shapes. The flowers had been there all along, in various stages, from seed to blossom (开花), making progress beneath the dirt. Patience is a lot like a wildflower field. ____19____ But waiting well often involves a lot of determination and unseen work.
____20____ Philosopher Matthew Pianalto calls patience a foundational virtue. He cites a well-known saying that patience is the root and guardian of all the virtues. Stated differently, it is difficult to be loving, courageous, or wise without patience.
A Wildflowers are in progress.

C. To outsiders, it can look like inaction.
D. Sometimes, patience requires preparation.

G. Patience is rarely celebrated in a culture that prizes speed.

Unexpected Hike
It was a sunny weekend, and a group of high-school students from Class 10, led by their enthusiastic teacher Mr. Brown, set out for a hiking trip in the nearby mountains. Among them were Alex, a curious and adventurous boy, and his reserved but intelligent classmate, Maya. Everyone was in high spirits, chatting and laughing as they walked along the well-marked trail.
As they hiked deeper into the mountains, the beautiful scenery around them was breathtaking. Lush green trees towered above, and colorful wildflowers dotted the path. The students stopped occasionally to take pictures, trying to capture the beauty of nature. Alex, always eager to explore, would run ahead a little, then wait impatiently for the rest of the group.
After a few hours of hiking, they reached a fork in the trail. Mr. Brown, checking the map, told the students that the left path would lead them to a magnificent waterfall, while the right one would take them back to the starting point. Most of the students voted to go left and see the waterfall. However, Maya, who had been quietly observing the weather, noticed some dark clouds gathering in the distance. She worried that a storm might be approaching and suggested they return. But her voice was drowned out by the excited chatter of her classmates, and they decided to continue on the left path.
As they got closer to the waterfall, the sound of rushing water grew louder. Just as they were about to reach their destination, large raindrops began to fall. In no time, it turned into a heavy downpour. The path, which was muddy to begin with, became slippery and dangerous. The students huddled together, not knowing what to do next. Mr. Brown tried to keep everyone calm, but the situation was getting out of control.

Should we have two-day weekends off
Recently, some high schools have started to offer two-day weekends, which has sparked heated debate.
First, two-day weekends have benefits. Students can relax and reduce stress after busy school days. They also have more time to spend with family or pursue personal interests, such as reading or sports. However, there are drawbacks. With fewer days for study, some students might fall behind if they fail to manage their time well. Additionally, long weekends could lead to procrastination, making it harder to catch up on schoolwork. In my opinion, two-day weekends can be beneficial if students plan their time wisely. By balancing rest and study, they can refresh their minds and improve productivity.
In conclusion while two-day weekends have pros and cons, their success depends on personal discipline and effective time management.

【答案】Alex, who was usually so feeless, now started to feel a bit scared. The heavy rain made visibility poor, and the strong wind was making the trees sway dangerously. His classmates were also looking around anxiously, their excited expressions replaced by worry. Mr. Brown was trying his best to shield the students from the rain with his coat, but it was of little use. Alex’s teeth chattered as he thought about the possible consequences of getting stuck in this storm. He regretted not listening to Maya’s advice earlier. The path was getting more and more difficult to navigate, with mud making it easy to slip and fall. Some students were on the verge of crying, and the group’s morale was at an all-time low.
Suddenly, Maya remembered something she had learned in a survival course. She quickly scanned the area around them and spotted a large overhanging rock not far away. Shouting to get everyone’s attention, she said, “Follow me! We can take shelter under that rock.” Mr. Brown immediately agreed and helped the students move towards the rock. Once they were all safely under the overhang, they were out of the direct rain. Maya then suggested they use some dry leaves and twigs they could find nearby to start a small fire to keep warm. The students, now full of hope, started collecting the materials. With a little effort, they managed to start a fire, and the warm glow gradually lifted their spirits. They waited for the storm to pass, grateful for Maya’s quick thinking and knowledge.
