A strange way to get relaxed has spread to cities across China. That is hugging trees. Young people take comfort from it.
Hundreds of people online share their tree-hugging experiences which make themselves less stressed and nervous. In their opinion, it is a way of keeping a close relationship with the natural world. By hugging a tree, some of them feel that the tree is hugging them back.
One woman gave up her job because of too much work pressure. According to her, hugging trees helps her a lot. She totally enjoys herself in hugging trees. “Hugging trees helps me calm down and lets me return to a natural state. I feel so free and feel the world is so big. I have also become braver than before,” she said.
Hugging trees is actually a kind of psychological therapy (心理治疗) which first came from northern Europe. In northern Finland, there’s even a tree-hugging competition every August. Bullying at school is an unfortunately frequent phenomenon (频繁现象). Three-quarters of students say they have been called names, excluded (排挤) from social groups or experienced violence at school. It’s so common that the solution of being bullied should be taught to every student.
Being bullied has affected many children. It can make children feel really bad, and the stress of dealing with it can make them feel sick. They may not want to play outside or attend school. It’s hard to keep mind on schoolwork when one is worried about the bully. A study found that victims (受害者) of teenage bullying were much more likely to have mental health problems. This may lead to difficulty in communicating when they grow up.
Since bullying is a big problem that affects students so much, how to deal with it becomes an important question. The first piece of advice is preventing a run-in with the bully. As a student, you can’t go into hiding or skip a class, but you can take a different way to school. Don’t give the bully a chance to hurt you. Secondly, standing up for yourself. Bullies often pick on someone they think they can have power over. But if you pretend to feel really brave and confident, the bully may walk away. Sometimes, just acting brave is enough to stop a bully. If the bully continues to bother you, seek help from adults such as teachers, parents or police.
