“Can I take your order ” Night after night, I had to say this as I worked in my family’s restaurant. My father was a fantastic cook. He wanted me, his only son, to cook with him, but I didn’t like cooking. Because of the restaurant, my father was always busy. He never had time to play football with me.
During my high school and college years, I worked with my family at night but I always avoided the kitchen. I couldn’t wait to graduate so that I could move away from the family business. Several days before my graduation day, my father and I started looking at new cars and finally found the right car. I was sure that my father would give it to me as my graduation gift.
On my graduation day, my father gave me a book as a gift. It was his old cookbook. I was so angry that I gave it back to him and ran out of the house. Several days later I moved away and started my business. Although I often saw my father during holidays, we never talked about the graduation gift. Then one day, I got a call that my father was ill. I went to see him because I was very worried.
That night, I looked through my father’s books and saw the cookbook that he had given me years before. I carefully opened the cookbook and went through it. Then I found something that made me cry. Students in Denmark take national tests on a computer at different times. With 4 years’ test results, researchers found something interesting. Students who took the test in the morning scored higher than those who took it in the afternoon.
So what happens We might have noticed that in the afternoon we become less productive and the work we do is of lower quality. A lot of people around the world experience the same thing every day. That’s called the afternoon slump (低迷).
Why does this happen Our bodies are controlled by our circadian rhythm (昼夜规律) which is like a clock. It tells our bodies when to go to sleep and wake up. Our energy levels change with the circadian rhythm.
We are smarter and more energetic during some parts of the day, while during others, we are less energetic. For example, during the night we experience a large drop in energy, especially between 2 a.m. to 4 a.m. However, our energy slowly rises after waking up until it reaches the highest in the late morning. But it is then followed by an afternoon low, which we call the afternoon slump. The low appears about seven hours after waking up, which is usually between 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for most people. This is the time when people make more mistakes during the daytime. When the afternoon slump is over, it rises again. But as our body gets ready for sleep, it slowly drops.
The afternoon slump is natural, but there are some ways to get the energy back. Stretching (拉伸) for even 20 seconds, taking a break for about 15 minutes, eating a bar of black chocolate and so on can have a huge influence on your energy levels. Hopefully, you have a better idea about the afternoon slump and what we can do about it.

A hug is a form of human touch that happens when two or more people hold each other closely. People hug for many different reasons in their lives. For example, if a child is sad, a parent may hug him or her to give comfort. Grown - ups may hug to show each other love. Friends may hug to show friendship. Members of a team may hug after winning a game to show happiness and encourage other team members.
Hugs may seem unimportant, but hugging is a necessary human need. For example, hugging plays a crucial role in building human relationships, which not only makes the hugged person feel loved and important but also, in turn, develops a sense of trust, belonging and safety that encourages open communication and understanding with others.
Hugging also has many health advantages. Research has shown that hugs can lower the risk of getting a cold as well as lower worry levels. Giving and receiving hugs can also make people feel in a good mood.
Finally, hugging can even save lives. In recent years, doctors have found that it is best when a baby is held soon after being born. It keeps the baby warm and helps keep his heart rate stable. Besides, these babies feel safer and seem to be happier. Sometimes, a hug from a mother can save the life of her newly - born baby who is dying.
Knowing the importance of a hug, one man started the Free Hugs Campaign in 2001. It was an act of kindness to show that everyone is an important person. Giving hugs to unknown people who wanted or needed a hug became popular in society. Now, the month of July is known as International Free Hugs Month. It is a time when people all over the world, regardless of (不管) age, gender or nationality, come together to spread love and warmth through hugs.
Someone once said, “We need four hugs a day for living on. We need eight hugs a day for holding on. We need twelve hugs a day for growing up.” There may not be many people who give out 12 a day. But for all its advantages, maybe it is something we should all do more often.
