As Alexandria Country Day School’s sixth-graders created small 3D-printed villages to deal with homelessness, they learned lessons beyond technology (科技).
The project which was inspired by life-size 3D-printed homes built by a Texas-based technology company, aimed to make housing accessible for everyone. Using inexpensive materials the students built strong homes in just a few days.
11-year-old Salwa Seman and Zoe Mandel, found creating settings challenging but worthwhile. “If the temperature of the printer is too hot or cold, or if the printed walls are tooth in, the constructions might fail,” said Salwa Seman. “You learn from your mistakes and make adaptations,” said Zoe Mandel.
The tech-focused project quickly developed into “an exercise in understanding, creation, and partnership to bring about lasting change,” said science teacher Alison McDonald. “When most people think of helping the homeless, they think of food and clothing,” said Juliet Galicia, 11. While necessary, those are solutions only for the moment. Even housing alone is not a full answer.
“We wanted to include other things that would make it feel more like a real community,” said Luke Wazorko, 11. A community garden, a place to raise chickens, a stadium for shared events, bus stops for access to jobs, and service for Wi-Fi and cellphones to help with job searches were important features offered to formerly unhoused residents.
“They get it!” said Amber Fogarty, president of a nonprofit organization helping homelessness in Austin. “The biggest reason for long-term homelessness is a serious lack in family relationships,” she said. “Housing alone will never solve homelessness, but community will People need a place where they are known, cared and loved.”
4. What is the aim of the project on 3D-printed villages
A. To raise money for the homeless.
B. To win a competition on 3D printing.
C. To teach students advanced technology.
D. To provide accommodation for the homeless.
5. What lesson does Salwa and Zoe’s experience tell us
A. Courage contributes to success.
B. Challenges help us progress.
C. Teamwork ensures glory.
D. Well begun is half done.
6. According to the text, how can homelessness be fully solved
A. By donating food and clothing.
B. By providing high-tech shelters.
C. By building open gardening space.
D. By creating a supportive environment.
7. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text
A. Future of Housing: Tech Giants’ Role
B. Modem Architecture: a Long Way to Go
C. A Common Dream: Story of City Planning
D. A Shared Community: Young Minds at Work

Expanding land for cows is the single biggest factor of rainforest loss in the Amazon. Deforestation reduces habitats for endangered species and releases planet-heating carbon dioxide. Actually, the Amazon is vulnerable. Its trees create moist (湿润的) clouds that make rain. If too many trees are cut down, the system could break down, drying the region and releasing a dangerous amount of carbon dioxide. “Reducing beef and dairy consumption has to be part of the solution for saving the Amazon and reducing climate pollution,” says Tim Searchinger, a senior research scholar at Princeton University.
However, Over the last three decades, the number of cows Molina and his family raise per hectare in the Amazon has nearly doubled, and milk production has increased. The reason is that they have transformed their farm into a completely different environment.
“This is the best hotel for a cow. With controlled temperatures and very good quality food, the cows sleep peacefully.” Molina said. The controlled temperatures are provided by trees. In 1993, the Molinas planted trees and plants across their farm, which now offer shade to cool the cows. The seed pods (种荚) and leaves from these trees give the cows protein-rich nutrition.
As Molina walks through the farm, he picks up some black, soft soil, similar to coffee grounds. The trees on the farm support bacteria that “fix” nitrogen, enriching the soil without the need for chemical fertilizers. Fertilizer production contributes to about 5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Molina explains that they no longer need to use nitrogen fertilizers, saving money and reducing climate pollution. Additionally, the trees provide shade that cools the area and helps keep moisture in the soil. This has reduced the farm’s need for irrigation, helping it to get through recent regional droughts.
By adopting these practices, the Molina family has increased the productivity of cows and dairy farms while minimizing environmental harm, proving that eco-friendly farming can help protect both the land and the climate.
8. What does the underlined word “vulnerable” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. Closely monitored. B. Easily damaged.
C Specially protected. D. Largely untouched.
9. What is the function of paragraph 3
A. To demonstrate ways to increase productivity of cows.
B. To stress the necessity of reducing dairy consumption.
C. To highlight the urgency of environmental protection.
D. To compare traditional and modern farming practices.
10. How do the trees benefit the soil according to the text
A. By fixing soil structure with their roots. B. By providing shade and cooling the cows.
C. By fertilizing the soil and holding moisture. D. By absorbing harmful chemicals in the soil.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. Innovative farming practices stop deforestation.
B. Planting trees helps to reduce climate pollution.
C. Cow raising threatens the ecosystem in the Amazon.
D. Eco-friendly farming balances cows and the Amazon.

Windows brighten a room, and give us a view outside of it. They also let in a large amount of heat from the sun. In fact, about 87% of heat gains in a given space come through its windows. This is because ultraviolet (紫外线的) radiation passes through glass easily. To keep out the heat, people use window coverings like curtains, but this also blocks the view.
A recent study indicates that soon people who love a view — but hate the heat — will be able to have it both ways. The study presents a new window coating that could let in sunlight and keep out the heat.
Window films and heat-blocking coatings are not a new concept. So, what’s new about this coating It’s all about the angles. Because windows are placed vertically (垂直地), sunlight hits them at different angles throughout the day. If a given coating only blocks ultraviolet light at a 90-degree angle, it is only useful at the time of day at which the sun hits the glass at that angle. “The angle between the sunshine and the window is always changing. Our coating maintains functionality and efficiency wherever the sun’s position is in the sky,” said the lead author of the study.
Instead of trying to use trial and error, which could take years, the scientists used AI machine-learning model assisted by quantum (量子的) computing to figure out the way to create an ideal window coating. The coating can remain clear and keep a room cool at any given hour of the day, regardless of the angle at which the sunlight is hitting the window.
There are endless numbers of practical applications for this new window coating, from commercial use to home use, and even for use in the cars. It will certainly lower energy use as people all over the world turn off their air conditioners and electric fans and still enjoy the view.
12. What is a disadvantage of window coverings
A. They are expensive. B. They are difficult to install.
C. They prevent the view outside. D. They can’t block the heat effectively.
13. What makes the new window coating unique
A. It blocks all sunlight. B. It is efficient at a fixed angle.
C. It changes color with sunlight. D. It works in all sunlight conditions.
14. How did scientists develop the new window coating
A. By trial and error. B. With quantum computing and AI.
C. By imitating existing window films. D. With traditional machine-learning models.
15. What is the author’s attitude toward the new window coating
A. Doubtful. B. Unclear.
C. Critical. D. Optimistic.

The four mountain climbers were still breathing heavily as they looked out into the distance. The views from the top of the mountain were breathtaking. In all directions, valleys, forests and other mountains were laid out before them. They could even see the small wooden houses of the village where they had spent the night and the route they had taken to reach the top of this small but dangerous mountain. Laughing loudly, they were surprised at their courage in climbing such a steep and rocky mountain slope. Filled with an enormous sense of achievement, the four young climbers patted each other on the back.
As the other three continued to enjoy the views, Jason, the leader of the group, stared at the horizon with a troubled look on his face.
“What is it, Jason ” Sofia, the youngest of the group, asked.
“Those dark clouds in the distance mean a heavy storm is fast on the way,” Jason replied. He remembered the villagers had warned him of the unpredictable weather conditions on top of the mountain and that a terrible storm could appear from nowhere.
“But it’s so warm and sunny here. I don’t think the storm is coming this way” Sofia said, more in hope than expectation.
However, Jason feared the worst and knew only too well what would happen if the storm caught them in the open. He addressed the group in a calm but serious tone, “If the storm hits us, the temperature will fall dramatically. The rain and mist will make it difficult for us to see where we are going and we could easily get lost or fall off a cliff. The wind will take our strength, so we need to get moving fast.”
The four mountain climbers packed up their facilities and immediately started back down the mountain. Unfortunately, despite their best efforts, the storm was upon them sooner than expected. The wind screamed in their ears, the driving rain stung (刺痛) their eyes and the mist made it impossible for them to see clearly.

With it getting dark, Jason decided that it was just too dangerous to continue. He gathered the group in the shelter of a large rock, where he noticed that the other three were frightened and looking to him for a way out. Pushed by responsibility and pressure of leadership, Jason, shouting against the wind, explained that the safest thing for the moment was taking shelter from the pouring rain. They had expected that the storm would pass very soon. However, as darkness settled over them, the shower swept in. How time dragged!
Finally, the storm showed signs of stopping and the climbers stepped out of the shelter. Unbearably cold and hungry, they felt their way downward with great difficulty, eager for a miracle. Suddenly, something caught Jason’s eye. Was it a flash of light There it was again…and another! In response, Jason immediately flashed his torch, exclaiming, “Over here! We are here!” His companions joined in. Rescue eventually arrived. Seeing the climbers, all the searching villagers breathed a sigh of relief and lovingly helped them return to the village.
