Dear Younger Me,
It’s hard to believe we’re nearing our senior years. While I hope we have 20 or 30 good years ahead, it’s time to think about some choices we regret.
I can’t hold you responsible for decisions made before we turned 18. Our brains weren’t fully developed, and being the youngest child in the family made it hard to find independence. We went against our parents. We got close to friends, but then again pushed them back. Yes, there were secrets and lies, but that’s part of growing up.
However, I think you should apologize for how you started our career (事业). You had always dreamed of being a reporter, but settled for editing work only because it was the easiest thing to do in your field. Over time, you felt you didn’t learn much, even though the pay was good and working hours were pretty flexible. It wasn’t until we changed to marketing that we found a more satisfying path and met the love of our life.

Scientists have a simple message recently: stop messing with the landscape of the Arctic.
They’ve discovered that planting trees in the Arctic could actually speed up global warming rather than help fight against it. The study comes at a critical time, as various regions, including Alaska, Greenland, and Iceland, have begun carrying out or considering large-scale tree-planting projects in their northern territories. The problem lies in a phenomenon known as the albedo effect-the ability of surfaces to reflect sunlight back into space. The snow-covered ground in the Arctic reflects about 75% of incoming sunlight, while dark evergreen trees reflect only about 10%. This difference means that replacing open plains in Arctic regions with forests actually traps more heat in the Earth’s system, despite the trees’ ability to capture (捕获) carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
However, the issues don’t stop there. When trees are planted in Arctic regions, they disturb the soil, which in these areas serves as one of Earth’s largest carbon banks. The Arctic’s permanently frozen soils contain more carbon than all the world’s plant life combined does. When this soil is disturbed by tree planting and root growth, it gives off stored carbon into the atmosphere, further contributing to global warming.
“Soils in the Arctic store more carbon than all vegetation on Earth,” explains lead author Jeppe Kristensen, an assistant professor from Aarhus University. “These soils are extremely sensitive to disturbances. For example, they are affected when people plant trees or conduct agricultural activities there, or when tree roots grow into the soil.”
The research team also found that trees in these regions face significant survival challenges. As climate change intensifies, these areas are experiencing more frequent wildfires, droughts, and pest outbreaks. When trees are overcome by these disturbances, any carbon they’ve stored is released back into the atmosphere. This nullifies the possible advantages they could offer as a means of capturing carbon, making the intended benefits of using trees for carbon capture ineffective.

Precision agriculture is one of the most significant trends in modern farming. One particularly promising application involves the use of real-time imaging to visualize how tiny drops of liquid are forming on plant surfaces. Unlike conventional agriculture where farmers often rely on general estimates and uniform application of pesticides (杀虫剂) across the entire field, this technology helps farmers maximize productivity while minimizing inputs.
This development originated from the work of Vishnu Jayaprakash, who had some family exposure to the process of spraying (喷洒) crops and recognized that the main challenge in that process is how to make water-based sprays interact effectively with surfaces of plants. Several factors influence this process, including the pressure, flow and nozzle (喷嘴) design of the application device, and the temperature, sunlight intensity, wind and other conditions at the time of spraying.
To effectively address this issue, Jayaprakash developed a two-camera system that can be connected to typical spraying equipment and use imaging of the sprayed solution on the target plants to determine necessary adjustments for the best degree of coverage with appropriately sized tiny drops. The system can be used to make on-the-go adjustments in order to get the spray coverage “just right.” This allows farmers to use only 20-30% of the product per acre (英亩) while maintaining key functions like pest control, fertilization, and growth regulation.
The advancement in precision agriculture is helping farmers reduce costs while maintaining crop protection. Susan Scheufele, an extension researcher at the University of Massachusetts, has conducted field trials with this technology on vegetable crops. In trials for cotton leaf removal, it has shown positive results even when used at 50% of the minimum recommended application rate on the product label.
The primary benefit of precision agriculture methods lies beyond cost savings. Despite the fact that this technology still has a long way to go, its adoption ensures that chemical remains in crops are well below harmful levels, safeguarding ecosystems and food safety.

Then Kobe began to dig the ground with its paws. Before long, it dug a sizable hole in the yard. As the hole expanded, an old gas pipe appeared at the bottom, which concerned her. Given Kobe’s normally well-behaved nature, Jane suddenly realized that its unusual actions might mean a warning of danger. “Dogs usually have sharp noses and can accurately sense the presence of gas while we humans can’t. Something must have gone wrong with the pipe,” Jane thought to herself, nervous and scared. The next minute, she raced into the house and immediately contacted the local gas management department.
Soon gas workers came. Without delay, they got down to detection. Sure enough, there was gas leaking from the aging pipe. It was so dangerous that all the villagers were urged to leave right away. Meanwhile, repair operations were conducted. The workers worked tirelessly for hours to replace the broken pipe. When everything returned to normal, the villagers couldn’t thank Kobe enough. But for its timely warning, an explosion could have easily happened and left the whole village in ruins. As the saying goes, one good deed deserves another. Jane’s kindness brought safety to herself and even the whole neighborhood.
