Dear boys and girls, do you like traveling Do you know why so many people like traveling In the past, people used to travel to foreign countries because they thought foreign countries would be different from their own countries in many ways—the buildings, the food, the national dresses and so on. At present, however, one large city is similar to another.
Then what is the foreign travel for What do tourists hope to experience in a foreign country that they can’t experience at home The answer could be that people show an interest in the past. Most people travel abroad to find out how foreign countries’ history and cultures used to be, not how they are today. Besides these, there is perhaps a country’s attraction (吸引力): its people. A country is not just its old buildings, its works of art or beautiful places, it’s also the people who live in it. This is why a country such as Thailand attracts millions of people. The tourists come mainly because of the friendliness of the people there.

It was March 2022. I was finishing off high school. While I was looking forward to my college years, I also felt a strong wish to volunteer abroad. So I took a gap year (间隔年) and went to volunteer in South Africa.
I took part in the Child Care Project. We worked in a foster care home and spent time with a group of orphans (孤儿) between the ages of 0 and 3. There was nothing as exciting as seeing a baby taking her first steps, hearing a two-year-old girl repeat all of the letters in the alphabet after I said them, seeing a little boy kick or catch balls of different sizes, and watching all of the kids carefully wash their hands as it became a habit. These were the skills that I watched the children develop during my time there. My heart was filled with pride. I also took part in the Teaching Project and worked in a preschool. Teaching was more tiring. Some children were naughty. They didn’t always listen to me. But it’s hard to describe the joy I felt when the kids finally understood what I was trying to teach them.
Volunteering in South Africa changed my life. It changed who I am as a person. I cannot be more thankful for this amazing experience.

As short videos are becoming more and more popular in China, many tourism officials (官员) choose to make creative short videos to show traditional Chinese culture and invite tourists to visit their hometown.

One night when I was in the second grade, I saw something on the news. It was about a group of homeless people sleeping outside in the cold. They didn’t have a warm and comfortable place to stay. That really bothered (使……担心) me.
So I decided to start a club. The goal was to raise money to help the homeless. I called it the Rock Club as I decided to make beautiful paintings on the rocks and sell them. When I first started, we only had about five members. But that quickly grew to about twenty. It wasn’t hard to ask people to join the club, because people came up to ask me if they could join.
We spent all of our free time painting rocks. We painted animals, flowers and even the names of sports teams. We went around the school to search for teachers and hoped they could buy our rocks. By New Year’s Day we raised thirty-three dollars and then we decided to give the money to a local homeless shelter (收容所). We were happy that we could help the homeless by ourselves.
A few days later, our Rock Club’s story came out in the newspaper. We all felt proud that we did something and people began to give more attention to the needs of the homeless in our town. Our school decided to start a program just for kids to help the homeless shelter.
Something as simple as some rocks, some paintings made me realize that you’re never too young and that you don’t need much to make a big difference.

I was careful to behave as well as possible, to persuade the King to give me my freedom. Lilliputians soon began to lose their fear of me. They called me the Man-Mountain. Sometimes I lay down and let them dance on my hand, and from time to time children came to play games in my hair. By now I was able to speak their language well.
One day the King invited me to watch the regular entertainments, which are greatly enjoyed by him, his family, and his lords and ladies. I was most interested in the rope-dancing. A very thin rope is fixed thirty centimeters above the ground. People who want to become the King’s most important officials jump and dance on this rope, and whoever jumps highest without falling gets the best job. Sometimes the King orders his lords to dance on the rope, to show that they can still do it. This sport is, of course, rather dangerous, and there are occasional (偶尔的) deaths as a result. It seems a strange way of choosing officials.
There was another interesting entertainment. The King holds a stick in front of him, and sometimes moves it up and down. One by one, people come up to him and jump over the stick or crawl under it. They go on jumping and crawling as the King moves the stick. The winner is the one who jumps and crawls for the longest time, and he receives a blue ribbon (缎带) to wear round his waist. The second best receives a red ribbon, and the third best gets a green one. Many of the Lilliput lords wear their ribbons proudly at all times. I had certainly never seen entertainment like this in any of the countries I had visited before.

In 1971, a poor young man traveled across the country, trying to make a start for himself. On the way, he had completely run out of money, so he had no food to eat and had to live in his car.
This continued until one morning. After sleeping in his car for a week, he walked into a restaurant and ordered a big breakfast. After eating his first good meal in weeks, he found he had to lie to the owner, telling him he had lost his wallet. He was so embarrassed (尴尬的) that his face turned red. The owner walked behind the young man’s seat. He bent down (弯腰) and stood up with a 20 dollars in his hands. It seemed as if it had fallen on the floor. “Young man, you must have dropped this,” the owner said. The young man was so surprised that he couldn’t believe his eyes! He quickly paid for the breakfast and left.
On the way out of town, he realized, “Maybe nobody dropped the money at all. Maybe the owner just wanted to help me in a way that didn’t embarrass me. What a kind person he is! If I have a chance in the future, I will do the same to help others.”

Recently I had a trip to Sydney with my parents. We visited the Wildlife Park.
The Wildlife Park has lots of different animals. Some are native (当地的) to Australia and can only be found there. There are more than 500 animals there, including kangaroos (袋鼠), koalas and crocodiles (鳄). They are kept in their natural environment. I like the Wildlife Park better than a zoo. In zoos, most of the animals are in cages (笼子).
We first spent some time with the kangaroos. We could touch and feed them. It was very exciting to be so close to them. There were koalas there, too. They looked very cuddly (令人想拥抱的). Although we couldn’t carry koalas, I could take a photo with one. It is a wonderful souvenir (纪念物) of my holiday in Sydney.
The Wildlife Park has plenty of freshwater (淡水) and saltwater crocodiles (鳄鱼). Some of them are very big and scary (吓人的) with huge teeth! I did not want to get too close to them.
There was also a bird show. The keepers showed us different species (种类) of birds. I saw an old parrot (鹦鹉). It could “talk” and made a great impression on me.
I enjoyed the trip very much. There was so much to see.

Do you know what is real happiness (快乐、幸福) Different people have different ideas about it. Some people liked money better than anything else in the world in the past. They thought if they were rich, they would have happiness. These years some think if they are healthy, they’ll have happiness. Others think if they help people in trouble, they will have happiness. So the real happiness is a feeling in our hearts.
As we know, everyone in the world needs happiness. Everyone wants to own happiness. Many people always look for happiness. Many people live in happiness, but they don’t realize (认识到) it.
So we must have our own answers to happiness. In fact, happiness is everywhere. For example, working is happiness; playing is happiness; reading is happiness...As a result, the happiness is also in what we do.

When my daughter was in primary school, she brought home four small twigs (树枝) one day. Her teacher gave these twigs to the students to grow. My husband and I grew them outside our house with my daughter. However, three of them died. Only one still grew but it didn’t grow very tall.
A few years later, I saw the only twig started to die. The lower branches (树枝) became poor. Only the top was still green. I did my best to save it, but it didn’t work.
Later one morning, I went out and looked at it again. I wondered if it would be better to just cut it down. However, I saw something moving on the branches. It was a robin (知更鸟) building its home there! I was surprised when I looked at it. I thought maybe this tree was still useful. It might not be healthy or beautiful, but it still gave a bird a home.
