How to deal with a bully
试卷第 1 页,共 3 页
Most of us have experienced bullying, whether we’ve been bullied ourselves or seen it
happen to others. In fact, almost 30 percent of US high school students have been bullied,
according to official figures published by the US government.
There are many different kinds of bullying. It could be someone hitting you, someone
sending you horrible messages on social media, or someone saying mean things to you. No matter
how it happens, being bullied is never a nice experience.
At the same time, anyone can be a victim of bullying—it doesn’t matter who you are.
“I was teased for being ugly, having a big nose, being annoying,” US singer Lady Gaga told
Rolling Stone. Even South African entrepreneur Elon Musk—probably one of today’s most
important businesspeople—was bullied at school. In fact, his mother Kimbal Musk told Esquire
magazine that her son wanted to quit school because of bullies.
“He hated it so much,” she said.
So, if you or someone you know is being bullied, how should you deal with it
Well, first it’s important to try and figure out why the bully is acting the way they are.
Sometimes, for example, some people become bullies because they want to feel powerful.
And usually, they pick on the nicest or most well-behaved people. They see these people as an
easy target as they are less likely to fight back.
“Sometimes … bullies are children who feel completely powerless at home,” psychologist
Gail Gross wrote on HuffPost. “These children may attempt to gain back power by bullying others
at school.”
Whatever the reason is, there are many different ways to deal with a bully. The most
obvious one is to share your problem with someone else. “All bullying is wrong and it is important
that you talk about the problem with someone you can trust,” UK children’s charity Barnardos
wrote on its website. “If you are being bullied, you are not alone.”
Indeed, talking to your teacher or parents is usually the best way to end your problem. Or,
in some cases, standing up to the person who’s bullying you may change their behavior. Once they
know that their bullying doesn’t work on you any more, they’re likely to stop.
Bullies are usually people with a lot of problems outside of school that they want to take
out on someone else. But if you ask someone for help or tell your bully to stop, your problem is
likely to go away.

How to deal with a bully
Even South African entrepreneur Elon Musk—probably one of today’s most
试卷第 1 页,共 3 页
important businesspeople—was bullied at school.
Most importantly, remember this: If you’re being bullied, it’s not your fault.

As we all know, there are many differences between western culture and Chinese culture.
46 Let’s look at some words about animals and plants. Most of the expressions in Chinese
about the dog, for example, “a homeless dog”, “a mad dog”, “a running dog” and “a dog catching
a mouse”, have negative meanings. 47 In English, people use: the dog to describe
positive actions. For example, “you are a lucky dog” means you are a lucky person. And “every
dog has its day” means each person has good luck sometimes. To describe a person’s serious
illness, they say “sick as a dog”, the word “dog-tired” means very tired. However, Chinese love
cats very much. But in western culture, “cat” is often used to describe a woman who is unkind.
48
49 People think the rose stands for love, peace, courage and friendship. And the
rose is the national flower of England, America and many other countries.
50 We can learn about many differences in cultures by comparing how words are
used.
A.There are many other examples of how “cat” is used differently as well.
B.The words about plants and animals are used in good or bad ways in different cultures.
C.We can see differences when we pay attention to the way words are used.
