I was a very active child, always running around and crashing into things. After the third time I needed stitches (缝合针), a doctor suggested fishing to calm me down. But since I’d nearly drowned (淹死) a few years before, my mother ruled water out of my life. Finally, she settled on reading as the only solution to my condition.
For one hour each day, I was forced to sit and read. I cried so hard that I couldn’t see the letters on the page. Then my teacher uncle stepped in with a pile of books. He said all I had to do was read the first twenty pages of a book. If I was still bored after that, I could put it down and pick up another.
My first pick was Roald Dahl’s The Enormous Crocodile, and after twenty pages, I fell out of my chair laughing. In the story, a crocodile tries to eat children by pretending to be a seesaw (跷跷板). I followed this up with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Their quick plots and simple messages were very satisfying to read.
Little by little, the books became longer and more challenging. I was in the middle of reading The Lord ofthe Rings when my mother complained that I was reading too much and that I should run around outside like I used to. But by then it was too late—I couldn’t stop reading. I began eagerly reading serious novels like Adventures ofHuckleberry Finn. I will never forget the scene where Huck is shocked that his friend Jim’s blood is red, not black. That moment taught me how stupid it is to judge someone by the color of their skin.
To this day, I think of books as a secret friend to whom I can always turn for advice. A good book must do two things: entertain and educate. If a book doesn’t interest you after twenty pages, put it down and try another one.

A.It must be fascinating at the beginning.
B.It should be easy to understand and short.

Could people dig a hole all the way through the earth Some people joke about being able to dig to China from Australia on the other side of the world. It’s true that Chinese scientists are digging deep to study the center of the earth!
Earlier on May 30, 2023, China started drilling (钻) its first over 10,000-meter-deep borehole (钻井) in Xinjiang. By Oct 1, 2023, the hole was already 7,856 meters deep. The borehole had a planned depth of 11,100 meters. When it was finished in February 2025, it became the deepest hole with 10,910 meters ever dug in China and the second deepest in the world (The world’s deepest man-made hole, the Kola Superdeep Hole in Russia is 12,262 meters deep). It took one year and nine months to complete the digging project.
Sun Jinsheng, a scientist in China, said the hole was very difficult to dig. “The difficulty of the digging project can be compared to a big truck driving on two thin steel cables (钢丝),” he said. The drill goes through more than ten layers (层) of rock. The oldest layer is about 145 million years old. The earth has lots of heat inside. So as the drill goes deeper, it faces hotter and hotter temperatures. The metal drill could get so hot that it would become as soft as noodles. The company dealt with this problem by using high-tech tools, such as heat-resistant (耐热的) drills.
China’s National Petroleum Corp is the company leading the project. It said the hole would provide useful information about deep underground areas, which can help scientists learn what happens inside our planet. The hole was dug in an area rich in oil. The oil could be used to heat buildings and make fuel (燃料) for cars and planes. It’s important to look deep into the earth because it could help in finding energy resources. It could also help scientists study the risks of natural disasters, such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions (火山爆发).

It was a winter evening in 2024. Mr. Chen, a 72-year-old blind man, tied his thick scarf tightly and lit an old lantern. The cold air hurt his skin as he prepared to walk home from the village market. His neighbor, Li Wei, watched from her door, looking puzzled.
“Uncle Chen,” she said softly, “Why carry a lantern if you can’t see ”
The old man turned with a kind smile. “This light isn’t for me. In the dark, others might not see my walking stick. It helps them avoid running into me. And maybe it can show someone else the way home too.” Li Wei thought about his words as he stepped onto the icy path.
Soon, the lantern’s light showed a small figure hiding under a snow-covered tree. “Grandpa!” a crying voice shouted. “I lost my mommy!” The shaking five-year-old held Mr. Chen’s hand. They had walked only ten meters when a strong wind blew out the flame.
The girl was scared, but Mr. Chen stayed calm. Feeling his way to some bushes (灌木丛), he found a dry stick with his experienced hands. Taking a small stone from his pocket, he made sparks(火花) until the dry leaves caught fire. The girl watched in surprise.
“How do you do that without seeing ” she whispered.
“Years of practice,” he answered. “When one sense goes away, others get stronger. Now I ‘see’ with my hands and ears.”

There is a saying, “He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man.” It describes the big challenge of making a journey to the Great Wall. It also tells people not to give up. British brothers James and Thomas Lindesay, aged 28 and 21, know the saying very well. And last year, the two brothers spent months running along the Great Wall.
The pair set off from the Jiayuguan in Gansu Province on July 15 and reached the Shanhaiguan on November 22. They passed through Yanmenguan in Shanxi and Juyongguan in Beijing along the main west-to-east length of the Great Wall.

They kept walking until they heard a woman’s worried shouts. The happy meeting between mother and child made everyone around them moved. That night, lanterns shined in every window of the village. Li Wei finally understood: real light comes from a kind heart, not from eyes that can see.
