Visit These Cultural Hot Spots in 2024
Guangzhou Museum of Art, Guangzhou, China
Covered with 21,008 pieces of “fish scales (鳞)” glass, Guangzhou Museum of Art looks like a blooming hero flower. This landmark building features seven floors of exhibits including ancient and contemporary Chinese paintings, watercolors, calligraphy and sculpture.

Istanbul Modern, Istanbul, Turkey
In Istanbul, there’s a 110,000-square-foot art space given to Renzo Piano, a famous Italian architect, to show modern art from Turkey and beyond. The building has a shiny aluminum (铝) surface that mirrors the nearby Bosporus. Inside, glass-walled rooms feature large abstract paintings. The café at the top offers a breathtaking view of Asia, with a small “pool” that seems to stretch to the horizon.
Opening Hours: Tuesday to Thursday, Saturday and Sunday:10a. m.-6p. m.
Friday: 10a. m.-8p. m.
Closed: Monday
Folger Shakespeare Library, Washington, D. C., USA
Fans of the Bard will find the world’s largest collection of Shakespeareana, including writings or items related to Shakespeare, at this newly restored and expanded museum and library reopening in June. Located in Washington, D. C.’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, the Folger has more First Folios — the rare 1623 book containing all of Shakespeare’s plays — than anywhere else in the world. An Elizabethan-style stage presents both classic and new works.
Opening hours: Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday: 11 a. m.-6p. m.
Thursday, Friday and Saturday: 11 a. m.-9 p. m.
Closed: Monday.
Canadian Canoe Museum, Ontario, Canada
One of the best things about visiting the world’s largest collection of canoes (独木舟) and kayaks (皮艇) You can actually row up to it. The streamlined, boat-shaped facility, which has its grand opening in May, is located lakeside in Peterborough. After seeing more than 600 boats or learning to carve paddles (桨) with Anishinaabe artists, visitors can go on a group boat trip around Little Lake.

Climate change is increasingly challenging the world of sports, with rising temperatures and extreme weather conditions threatening the existence of sports events globally. Athletes like triathlete Pragnya Mohan have been forced to relocate their training to cope with unbearable heat, while others, including discus thrower Sam Mattis, face extreme temperatures during competitions. Such conditions not only affect athlete performance but also pose a threat to the continued existence of certain sports.
At the UN climate summit in Baku, experts underlined the urgent need to address climate change’s impact on sports. Events are being interrupted by unusual weather patterns, as seen in the Paris Olympics, where triathlons were delayed due to water quality issues from heavy rain. In response, some sports organizations and clubs are beginning to take action. Soccer clubs have joined forces to reduce emissions and engage fans in climate awareness, emphasizing the role sports can play in advocating environmental responsibility. These efforts illustrate the crucial role that organized sports can have in promoting and supporting sustainable practices.
However, large-scale efforts can sometimes seem less impactful due to conflicting priorities and the financial interests tied to major sports events. These factors hinder real progress in sports-related climate advocacy and reveal the complexities involved in combining global sports practices with environmental initiatives.
Climate change is also increasing the costs associated with sports, widening the gap between rich and less rich athletes. As certain regions become unsuitable for training due to weather extremes, athletes face increased travel and training expenses, creating a widening socioeconomic divide. To adapt, sports events are shifting to cooler times or new locations. However, these measures only partially address the broader issues. Technologies like air-conditioned stadiums, used in the Qatar World Cup, provide temporary relief but are not sustainable.
As sports wrestle with climate change, athletes and organizations must innovate to reduce their environmental footprint. A joint effort is essential to make sure sports can continue to boom in a changing world, offering fair opportunities while promoting sustainability, with an emphasis on long-term, impactful solutions.
4. Why are Pragnya Mohan and Sam Mattis mentioned in Paragraph 1
A. To demonstrate physical challenges world athletes face.
B. To praise their achievement in reducing climate change.
C. To display their excellent performance in competitions.
D. To show the bad effects climate change has on sports.
5 What does the underlined word “hinder” mean
A. Discover. B. Achieve. C. Deny. D. Block.
6. What might be the impact of climate change on sports
A. It narrows the skill gap between athletes.
B. It raises the training costs for sports events.
C. It promotes equality among sports participants.
D. It increases the number of international events.
7. What does the author imply in the last paragraph
A. Innovative technology is key in sports competitions
B. Cooperation is needed to ensure the sports’ survival
C. Organizations should offer athletes fair opportunities.
D. The solutions made now are short-term and low-impact.
C
What do you get when you paint a pair of eyes on a cow’s rump (臀部) The answer is that you’ll get an approach to scaring predators (捕食者) away. This simple trick is called the “i-cow” solution. The eyes painted on cows’ rumps can trick certain predators, such as lions and leopards.
An experiment by Australia and Botswana compared how predators reacted to herds that had eye paintings on their rumps, ones that had “xs”, and some without any paintings at all. Over a four-year period, researchers found that 15 out of the 835 unpainted cows were killed by predators, 4 of the 543 cows with “xs” died, but every single one of the 683 animals with eye paintings on their rumps was still alive.
Neil Jordan, a biologist in Australia, first came up with the method. While watching a lion hunting a deer, he noticed something interesting. “Lions usually move slowly and quietly to their prey, get close and jump on them. But when the deer noticed the lion and the lion realized it had been seen, it gave up on the hunt,” he said. Later, he worked with a local farmer to test his idea over a period of 10 weeks, and like the most recent results, all of the cows with painted eyes survived.
Despite the positive results, Dr. Jordan says the method isn’t a sure solution. He says if farmers painted eyes on the backsides of all their cows, predators might finally figure out that the eyes aren’t real. Therefore, further research should be done to prove whether it is effective.
In spite of this, he’s still hoping that the “i-cow” will become a widely used technique to at least reduce predator’s attacks. “I think the farmers are just happy with this,” Dr. Jordan says. “After all, all they need is a paint pot, paint brush and a little bit of artistic talent.”
8. What is “i-cow” solution intended for
A. Protecting cows from being attacked. B. Leading predators to the farm.
C. Training cows to notice predators. D. Recognizing cows quickly.
9. What do we know about the experiment in paragraph 2
A. Most of the unpainted cows were killed.
B. The cows with “eyes” on the rump survived.
C. A small number of cows with “xs” survived.
D. More than twenty painted cows were killed.
10. What might be a cause of the “i-cow” solution’s failing to work
A. Predators perceive the tricks.
B. Predators get close to the cows.
C. There is more than one predator.
D. The farmers lack basic painting skills.
11. Why does Dr. Jordan think that farmers will favor his method
A. It is a widely recognized approach. B. It follows their traditional practice.
C. It is easy and cheap to carry out. D. It has proved the most effective.
D
Maths phobia (恐惧症) is older than you might think. A hundred years ago, German physicist Felix Auerbach, feeling sad about the phenomenon and hoping to find ways to solve it, wrote a book called The Fear of Mathematics and How to Overcome It. Maths, he said, has so much to contribute to society that solving this fear is a challenge of the highest importance.
Why do we fear mathematics At heart, says Auerbach, it comes down to a fundamental misunderstanding of what maths is. The fear of messing up a calculation may be real, but the fact that there are many excellent mathematicians who are terrible at calculation proves that numeracy (计算能力) and mathematics aren’t the same thing. What, then, is mathematics
Auerbach says it is three things: a science, a language and an art. For me, part of the issue is that we are stuck in the first box. A focus completely on technical skills misses the joy and excitement that can come from finding patterns and understanding them, from seeing the true beauty of mathematics. That beauty lies in wonderfully elegant thinking that allows us to understand the infinite (无穷大), explore the amazing symmetries (对称) of art and nature, and delight in the perfection of an abstract world of ideas. As a language, what sets maths apart is the universality (普及性) of its truths — you can become fluent wherever you are from. If we can be shown the beauty of mathematics, we will forget to be afraid of the technical details behind it.
Today’s self-help experts like to point out that, physiologically, we experience anxiety the same way we experience excitement. So, if your heart is racing and your palms are sweating before a big event, you simply have to tell yourself that you are excited. In the same way, fear can be negative (dread) or positive (awe). Our goal should be to try to move people from a view of mathematics as a collection of calculations whose great difficulty brings dread to an appreciation of a beautiful language whose complexity inspires awe.
A hundred years on, Auerbach’s writing is as relevant as ever. It is a timely reminder that “maths anxiety”, as it is now called, remains as much a challenge in 21st century as it was in the 20th.
12. Why do we fear mathematics according to Auerbach
A. Because maths contributes a lot to society. B. Because we always mess up a calculation.
C. Because we misunderstand what maths is. D. Because we lack strategies to learn maths.
13. What is the main idea of paragraph 3
A. The understanding of mathematics. B. The application of mathematics.
C. The influence of mathematics. D. The introduction to excellent mathematicians.
14. What is our aim when dealing with the fear of maths
A. To encourage people to read more books about physiology.
B To inspire people to learn and enjoy a complex foreign language.
C To help people learn how to do calculations correctly and accurately.
D. To change the view of maths from calculating to appreciating its beauty.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Don’t care about maths B. Don’t fear the numbers
C. Maths phobia is not a challenge anymore D. Maths anxiety is common at all age levels

Claire didn’t want the robot in her house, especially as her husband would be away on a business trip for three weeks, but Larry persuaded her that the robot wouldn’t harm her or allow her to be harmed. It would be a bonus. However, when she first saw the robot, she felt alarmed. His name was Tony. He seemed ___52___ like a human than a machine. He was tall and handsome with smooth hair and a deep voice, although his facial expression never changed.
On the second morning, Tony brought her breakfast and then asked her ___53___ she needed help dressing. She felt ___54___ and quickly told him to go. Now she was being looked after by a robot that looked so human, and it was disturbing.

As she turned around, there stood Gladys Claffern. How awful to be discovered by her, Claire thought. By the look on her face, Claire knew that Gladys thought they were in a relationship. After all, she knew Claire’s husband’s name was Larry, not Tony. Although it was completely ____63____, Claire felt ____64____.
When Claire got home, she wept. Gladys was everything Claire wished to be. Tony told her she was being sensitive and was just as good as Gladys. He suggested that she invite Gladys and her friends to the house the night before he was to leave and Larry was to return. By that time, Tony expected that the house, ____65____ was being completely transformed, would be ready.

Even ____67____ Tony had been in he next room, he managed to catch her in time. As he held her, she felt the warmth of his body. She screamed, pushed him away and ran to her room.

As the school year wrapped up and the first days of summer vacation stretched out before them, Max, Ava, and Sam had a perfect day planned at their usual community park. This tidy little park was their go - to spot for unwinding and just enjoying some precious leisure time.
Max rushed ahead with a soccer ball under his arm, Ava and Sam trailing closely behind, full of energy. It was the kind of day that promised endless fun and carefree laughter. But as they stepped into the park, their heart sank. The once - beloved playground was now a chaotic mess of discarded trash (乱扔的垃圾) — candy wrappers stuck in the slide’s metal bars, plastic bottles rolling in the wind, and chip bags lying underfoot.
“Look at this!” Ava shouted in disbelief as she pointed to the garbage near the swings.
Max’s face darkened with frustration. The three friends stood frozen, their eyes scanning the playground area. The once clean slides and swings were now buried under a layer of candy wrappers and plastic bottles. Ava cast a glance (瞥一眼) at the walking trails, where garbage seemed to have taken over, with discarded bags and cans lying everywhere. Sam looked out at the grassy fields — a disaster. The park was vast, but every corner seemed to have been touched by the carelessness of others.
“Who would be so thoughtless ” Max whispered, shaking his head.
Sam kicked a plastic bottle in anger, sending it flying across the grass. “It’s not just thoughtless — it’s disrespectful.”
Ava sighed thoughtfully but suddenly her face lit up. “We can’t just leave it like this. Why don’t we do something about it We can, say, form a Cleanup Squad (清洁小分队)…” she said, her voice soft but determined.

Max ran to fetch some trash bags from his nearby home. Ava and Sam started collecting the larger pieces of garbage first, like the chip bags and plastic bottles. As they worked, Ava hummed a little tune, and the others joined in. Their laughter and songs filled the park, making the cleanup seem more like a fun game.
Unexpectedly, other parkgoers joined in as they did the cleanup. An elderly couple, who were taking a stroll, saw what they were doing and decided to lend a hand. A group of kids playing nearby also came over, eager to help make the park clean again. With more people joining, the cleanup went much faster. Before long, the playground was clean once more. The slides and swings sparkled in the sun, and the grassy fields were free of trash. Max, Ava, and Sam looked at each other, beaming with pride. They realized that with everyone’s effort, they could make a difference and keep their beloved park beautiful.
