On his tenth birthday, on February 6, 2023, Lzmir Kassam woke to the news of the powerful
earthquake in Turkey and Syria. Living in Calgary but named after Turkey’s third-largest city, Lzmir
felt a deep connection to the sorrow. Driven by a wish to help, he saw an opportunity to make a
difference through his love of running. Two years earlier, Lzmir had run his first half-marathon,
collecting money for Canadian Women for Women in Afghanistan.
This time he set a new goal: to run ten kilometers ten times, each run marking a year of his life,
and to use this challenge to collect money for the people in the earthquake-hit area. Over the course
of four months, from last February to June, he ran a total of 62 miles (100 kilometers)-more than two
marathons. For his final run, on June 10, the Canadian Turkish Cultural and Islamic Centre helped
organise a celebratory event, and Lzmir was joined by his father, his teacher, his classmates and
members of the Calgary Turkish community.
In the end, Lzmir’s movement collected more than 10,500 for the people in the earthquake-hit

Salt is important. But if we eat too much, it may cause some diseases, such as high blood pressure. That's bad. We do, however, have to make sure we include salt in food that we eat every

day. There are many kinds of salt you can buy. Some are cheap, others expensive. One of the many
reasons that some salt is more expensive than others is that it contains more minerals. One of the
finest salts you can buy is called bamboo salt and it's made in South Korea.
When it comes to Korean food, you will probably think of kimchi. If you have ever tried kimchi,
you will know that it can be salty. It's unlikely that bamboo salt is used in the production of kimchi.
But like kimchi, bamboo salt has a very long history. Koreans used bamboo salt thousands of years
ago. Dr Kim II Hoon began producing the bamboo salt we can buy today in the early twentieth
century. When he died in 1992, his son took over. It takes a long time to produce. The process ( 工序)
goes something like this.
Sea water is evaporated ( 蒸发), leaving the salt. This is put into three-year-old bamboo cases.
The bamboo is covered with natural clay, rich in minerals, then baked for up to fifteen hours. The
salt hardens and the bamboo burns away. The hardened salt is then ground into a powder ( 粉末).
The process is repeated seven more times. It is then heated a ninth time up to 1, 700 degrees Celsius.
When the salt cools down, it is as hard as stone. Its colour has changed from grey to purple. The
stone is once again ground down and is ready to use.
The repeated heating process removes the impurities ( 杂质) from the salt. The bamboo gives
the salt sweetness not found in other salts. It is high in many minerals including potassium,
phosphorus and iron. Bamboo salt is said to be good for many different illnesses. These include
helping digestion (消化) and managing blood pressure.

Researchers have developed a new soft robot design that conducts itself with three behaviours at
the same time: rolling (翻滚) forward. turning like a record and following a path that goes around a
central point. The equipment, which operates without human or computer control, holds promise for
developing soft robots that can be used to AA-head and map unknown environments.
The new soft robots are called twisted ring-bots (扭曲环机器人) . They are made of something
like the ribbon (缎带) and then joined together at the end to form a ring.
When the robots are placed on a surface that is at least 55 degrees Celsius, which is hotter than

the surrounding air, one part of the ribbon touching the surface becomes smaller, while one part in
the air does not. This induces a rolling movement: the warmer the surface, the faster the robot rolls.
“The ribbon rolls on its horizontal axis (横轴) , giving the ring forward strength,” says Jie Yin, a
professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.
The twisted ring-bot also turns along its central axis. And as the twisted ring-bot moves forward
it travels in a path around a central point, basically moving in a large circle. However, if the twisted
ring-bot meets a boundary- like the wall of a box-it will travel along the boundary.
The twisted ring-bots are examples of equipment whose behaviour is governed by physical
intelligence, meaning their actions are determined by their structural design and the materials they
are made of, rather than being directed by a computer or human.
