The Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, is one of China’s oldest traditional holidays. With a history of over 2,000 years, it is best known for dragon boat races, sticky rice dumplings (zongzi), and the story of Qu Yuan, a patriotic poet of the Warring States Period who drowned himself in protest against corruption.
From Legend to Custom
According to legend, villagers raced boats to save Qu Yuan and threw rice into the river to feed his spirit. Today, these actions have evolved into dragon boat competitions and the making of zongzi. "The festival is not just about food and races; it’s a way to honor loyalty and integrity," says Li Wei, a cultural historian in Wuhan.
Modern Innovations
While traditions remain central, the festival has embraced modern twists. In Hangzhou, tech companies design AI-powered dragon boat simulators for urban youth. In Shanghai, vegan zongzi with quinoa (藜麦) and avocado (牛油果) fillings attract health-conscious millennials. Even the races have gone global: cities like London and Sydney now host annual dragon boat events.
Cultural Revival
In 2009, UNESCO added the Dragon Boat Festival to its Intangible Cultural Heritage list. This recognition has spurred efforts to protect related customs. Schools teach students to wrap zongzi, and apps offer virtual reality experiences of ancient Chu Kingdom rituals. "Young people used to see it as just a holiday, but now they ask about its roots," adds Li Wei.
Balancing Past and Present
Despite modernization, challenges remain. Some worry that commercialized zongzi packaging or high-tech races may dilute cultural meaning. Yet for many, the festival’s spirit endures. As 17-year-old student Zhang Ming puts it: "When I row in a dragon boat, I feel connected to every generation that came before me."

Joseph Banks was born on 13 February 1743 in London. His passion for botany began at school. From 1760 to 1763 he studied at Oxford University, during which time he received a great deal of fortune. In 1766 Banks traveled to Newfoundland and Labrador, collecting plant and other specimens (标本). The same year he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society.
In 1768 he joined the Society's expedition, led by Captain James Cook, to explore the uncharted lands of the South Pacific. The expedition circumnavigated (环航) the globe and visited South America, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia and Java. Banks collected a great number of specimens on the way and, on his return, his scientific account of the voyage and its discoveries sparked considerable interest across Europe.
Banks was interested in plants that could be used for practical purposes and be introduced into other countries for possible commercial use. After he became president of the Royal Society in 1778, he promoted the career of many scientists and in his capacity as director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, sent many botanists abroad to find new plants and extend the Gardens' collection.
In 1781 Banks was made a baronet (准男爵), and in 1795 received the order of Knight Commander of the Bath; two years later he was admitted to the Privy Council (枢密院). In 1793 his name was given to the Banks Islands, a volcanic group of islands near Vanuatu in the Pacific. A robot as large as a truck moves along the bottom of the deep sea. It eats metallic (含金属的) rock and soft mud. They travel up a long pipe to a ship, where workers and machinery separate out the rock and throw the mud back into the ocean. This is a mining operation. The rock contains a mixture of metals, including ones called rare earth metals. People use these materials to make batteries and electronics like computers and phones.
Deep-sea mining hasn’t happened yet. But it probably will occur within the next decade. No country owns any part of the deep sea, so a UN organization called the International Seabed Authority (ISA国际海底管理局) decides who is allowed to mine there. It has allowed 29 organizations to explore the deep sea and make plans for mining, one of which plans to begin mining in the year 2027.
Scientists and environmentalists, though, warn that mining could destroy deep-sea ecosystem. In 1989, ecologist Hjalmar Thiel carried out a test. His team searched the seafloor of the Pacific Ocean, in a spot with lots of the metallic rocks that miners wanted. They didn’t actually collect any of the rocks. But they disturbed the mud, just as a mining operation would. The cloud of mud fell back down over the ocean floor burying creatures living there. Up to now, the area they disturbed has not recovered. Signs of the search are still there. Deep sea creatures like sponges and corals have not moved back in. That means mining could have harmful, long-lasting consequences for deep ocean life. Scientists want to understand the deep sea better before disturbing it.
Leaving the deep sea alone sounds great, but people need those metals. "Mines on land are soon going to run out," geologist Steven Scolt of the University of Toronto told Smithsonian Magazine. "Every electronic device in the world has rare earth metals in it... we need raw resources." New energy technologies including solar and wind power and electric cars rely on these metals as well. We may need to mine them from the sea in order to switch to greener energy sources.
28. Why a robot is placed at the bottom of the deep sea
A. To transport equipment to the ship.
B. To restore damaged oceanic ecosystems.
C. To extract valuable metallic resources from the seabed.
D. To test underwater robotic technology.
29. What do we learn about deep-sea mining
A. It has caused terrible damage to oceanic ecosystems.
B. All organizations are permitted to explore the deep sea.
C. It is likely to begin within the next ten years.
D. The ISA directly organizes deep-sea mining operations.
30. What did Hjalmar Thiel find in his test
A. The deep-sea ecosystem recovered rapidly after the test.
B. The test caused long-term damage to the deep-sea ecosystem.
C. No ecological damage was detected during the test.
D. Deep see creatures adapted quickly to the effect of the test.
31. What is Steven Scolt’s attitude towards deep-sea mining
A. Objective. B. Indifferent. C. Disapproving. D. Supportive.

As computers become more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly depending on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more.
Do you write by hand more or type more In Beijing, students start using a computer as early as primary school. And computer dependence is more widely spread among university students. Almost all their assignments and essays are typed on a computer.
All the students interviewed say they usually use a computer.
It’s faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that’s why computers are being applied more and more often to modern education. But when people are taking stock in computers increasingly, problems appear.
"When I’m writing with a pen, I find I often can’t remember how to write a character, though I feel I’m familiar with it."
"I’m not in the mood to write when faced with a pen and paper."
Many students don’t feel this is something to worry about. Now that it’s more convenient and efficient to write on a computer, why bother to handwrite
Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said, "Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer’s emotion. Through one’s handwriting, people can get to know one’s thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them."
To encourage students to handwrite more, many primary schools in Beijing have made writing classes compulsory(必修的), and in universities some professors are asking students to turn in their homework and essays written by hand.
32.What does the underlined expression "taking stock in" in Paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Getting bored with.
B. Getting dependent on.
C. Becoming crazy about.
D. Getting curious about.
33.Why do the students interviewed prefer to write using a computer mainly
A. Because they can correct the mistakes they make quickly and conveniently.
B. Because they are usually asked to e mail their homework and essays.
C. Because they find it not easy to remember how to write a character.
D. Because computers have become a trend and fashion in China.
34.Which of the following statements is NOT true of the advantages of handwriting
A. Handwriting contains the writer’s emotions.
B. Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic value.
C. Handwriting can impress people well and build one’s self-confidence.
D. The writer’s thinking and personality are shown in his or her handwriting.
35.Which of the following can be the best title of the passage
A. To Type or to Handwrite
B. The Importance of Handwriting and Typing
C. Writing by Computer Will Replace Writing by Hand
D. Practical and Aesthetic Value of Chinese Characters

Rosa’s family vacation to the beach was usually the highlight of her summer. This year, however, her parents announced a new rule: no phones for the entire week.
Rosa complained, "But my friends will be expecting my updates about the trip." Her mom gave her a serious look. Unwillingly, Rosa handed her phone over and her mom locked it away.
It took almost one day for them to drive to the beach house. As they turned off the highway onto countryside roads, the clouds darkened. It started to rain cats and dogs. "Even more beautiful in the rain," her mother said. "What do you think, Rosa " She became impatient. "Beautiful," she murmured.
That night after dinner, Rosa walked into the kitchen. Her father was washing dishes. She gave her father a loving look and said in her sweetest voice, "Could I have my phone back Just for one second please "
"No," he replied. "It’s locked at home." Rosa was very upset. Having nothing better to do, she examined the dusty bookshelf in the living room. The books looked as boring as the weather. On the top shelf, however, she spotted a puzzle (拼图). She took it, emptied the pieces on the table, and began to sort them.
After what seemed like a few minutes, she looked up. It was already eleven o’clock. She had been there working on the puzzle for almost three hours! The puzzle was only half done, but she was really tired. So, she went to bed.
When Rosa awoke the next morning, she jumped out of bed and opened the curtains. The sun was rising over the blue ocean. The sky was cloudless. The scene reminded Rosa of a photo that her friend Beth had recently sent her.
This view was even more beautiful. It would leave everyone speechless. Kathy dashed to her bedside table and reached for her phone. But there was nothing there. She sighed. Still, she stood in front of the window, admiring the sunrise.

解析:W: Virtual reality is already widespread in entertainment and is starting to spread to fields ranging from education to health care. But while vision and hearing are extremely advanced, and touch is improving, one key sense has been missing from the virtual world: smell. That may be about to change. Engineer Xinge Yu of the City University of Hong Kong and his colleagues have developed a light, flexible and wireless device that can precisely deliver smells such as pineapple or green tea. VR users can fully immerse in a fragrant virtual world. "Bringing smell into VR expands it into another dimension," Yu says. The team’s design was described in a paper. It was published in a journal called Nature Communications. A key advantage of this design is that it can control smell intensity. One demonstration in the study was when a woman in a four-dimensional movie brought a rose up to her nose, the intensity of the smell increased.

Yet for many, the festival’s spirit endures.(然而,对许多人来说,这个节日的精神依然长存)"可知,前后句为转折关系,后半句提到节日精神依然存在,那么前半句应该是表达商业化包装和高科技比赛对文化意义有不好的影响,结合选项,此处表示这些商业化和高科技的东西可能会削弱端午节的文化意义,符合逻辑关系。由此可知,划线单词的意思与weaken"削弱"意义相近。故选 C。
B
24.答案:B
解析:细节理解题。根据文章第一段"The same year he was elected a fellow of the Royal Society."(同年,他被选为皇家学会会员。) In 1768 he joined the Society's expedition, led by Captain James Cook, to explore the uncharted lands of the South Pacific."(1768年,他加入了由詹姆斯库克船长率领的协会探险队,去探索南太平洋未知的土地。) After he became president of the Royal Society in 1778, he promoted the career of many scientists and in his capacity as director of the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew, sent many botanists abroad to find new plants and extend the Gardens' collection."(1778年他成为皇家学会主席后,他促进了许多科学家的事业发展。 In 1781 Banks was made a baronet (准男爵), and in 1795 received the order of Knight Commander of the Bath; two years later he was admitted to the Privy Council(枢密院)."(1781年班克斯被授予准男爵称号,1795年被授予巴斯骑士司令勋章;两年后,他被选入枢密院。)
根据画线词前的"The expedition circumnavigated(环航) the globe and visited South America, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia and Java. Banks collected a great number of specimens on the way "可知,探险队环游全球,访问了南美洲、塔希提岛、新西兰、澳大利亚和爪哇岛。
26.答案:A
In 1766 Banks traveled to Newfoundland and Labrador, collecting plant and other specimens (标本)."(1766年,Banks前往纽芬兰和拉布拉多采集植物和其他标本。)以及第二段"In 1768 he joined the Society's expedition, led by Captain James Cook, to explore the uncharted lands of the South Pacific. The expedition circumnavigated(环航) the globe and visited South America, Tahiti, New Zealand, Australia and Java. Banks collected a great number of specimens on the way and, on his return, his scientific account of the voyage and its discoveries sparked considerable interest across Europe."(1768年,他加入了由詹姆斯库克船长率领的协会探险队,探索南太平洋的未知之地。 故选A项。
In 1793 his name was given to the Banks Islands, a volcanic group of islands near Vanuatu in the Pacific. These were explored and named by Captain Bligh-Banks had helped arrange a previous expedition of Bligh's."(1793年,他的名字被命名为班克斯群岛,这是太平洋瓦努阿图附近的一个火山群,由布莱船长探索并命名,班克斯曾帮助安排布莱的探险队。)
A robot as large as a truck moves along the bottom of the deep sea. It eats metallic (含金属的) rock and soft mud. They travel up a long pipe to a ship, where workers and machinery separate out the rock and throw the mud back into the ocean. This is a mining operation. The rock contains a mixture of metals, including ones called rare earth metals."(一个卡车般大小的机器人在深海底部移动。 (To extract valuable metallic resources from the seabed.),所以选C。
Deep-sea mining hasn’t happened yet. But it probably will occur within the next decade."(深海采矿尚未发生。 (It is likely to begin within the next ten years.),A选项"它已经对海洋生态系统造成了严重破坏",文中说深海采矿还未发生,所以A错误;B选项"所有组织都被允许探索深海",文中说"a UN organization called the International Seabed Authority (ISA国际海底管理局) decides who is allowed to mine there. It has allowed 29 organizations to explore the deep sea and make plans for mining",并不是所有组织都被允许,所以B错误;D选项"ISA直接组织深海采矿作业",ISA是决定谁被允许在那里采矿,不是直接组织,所以D错误,所以选C。
That means mining could have harmful, long-lasting consequences for deep ocean life."(1989年,生态学家 Hjalmar Thiel 进行了一项测试。 (The test caused long-term damage to the deep-sea ecosystem.),所以选B。
Leaving the deep sea alone sounds great, but people need those metals. ‘Mines on land are soon going to run out,’ geologist Steven Scolt of the University of Toronto told Smithsonian Magazine. ‘Every electronic device in the world has rare earth metals in it... we need raw resources.’ New energy technologies including solar and wind power and electric cars rely on these metals as well. We may need to mine them from the sea in order to switch to greener energy sources."(不干扰深海听起来很棒,但人们需要那些金属。
It’s faster and easier to correct if using a computer. And that's why computers are being applied more and more often to modern education. (如果用电脑纠正会更快更容易。这就是为什么计算机越来越多地应用于现代教育。)"以及上文内容可知,当人们越来越多地依赖电脑时,问题就出现了。选项A"Getting bored with(对……厌倦)";选项B"Getting dependent on (依赖)";选项C"Becoming crazy about (对……疯狂)"选项D"Getting curious about (对……好奇)"。故选B。

Many educators think differently. Shi Liwei, headmaster of a famous primary school in the capital said, "Chinese characters enjoy both practical and aesthetic value. But those characters typed with computer keyboards only maintain their practical value. All the artistic beauty of the characters is lost. And handwriting contains the writer's emotion. Through one's handwriting, people can get to know one's thinking and personality. Beautiful writing will give people a better first impression of them."(许多教育工作者有不同的想法。首都一所著名小学的校长石立伟说:"汉字既有实用价值,又有审美价值。但是那些用电脑键盘输入的字符只保留了它们的实用价值。所有人物的艺术美感都消失了。笔迹包含着作者的情感。通过一个人的笔迹,人们可以了解一个人的思想和性格优美的文笔会给人留下更好的第一印象。")可知选项A、B和D都是书写的优点,只有选项C未提及。故选C。
35.答案:A
AS computers become more popular in China, Chinese people are increasingly depending on computer keyboards to input Chinese characters. But if they use the computer too much, they may end up forgetting the exact strokes of each Chinese character when writing on paper. Experts suggest people, especially students, write by hand more. 故选A。
第二节
答案:C;E;A;F;G
When was the last time you had to memorize a phone number The chances are that it has been years, given that you can simply use your digital devices to memorize that number for you. In a world of digital information, a new phenomenon "digital amnesia", which refers to the loss of our brains’ ability to remember information as we become dependent on technology to get data, is starting to spread across the country.(你上一次记电话号码是什么时候 考虑到你可以简单地用你的数字设备来记住你的数字,很可能已经好几年了。在一个数字信息的世界里,一种新现象"数字健忘症"开始在全国蔓延。"数字健忘症"指的是我们的大脑由于依赖技术来获取数据而丧失了记忆信息的能力)"可知,上文提出"数字健忘症"的问题,后文给出具体的方法,本句承上启下,既提到数字健忘症的问题,又引出下文将要讨论的解决方法。故C选项"幸运的是,你可以采取一些方法来处理它"符合语境,故选C。

It allows you to exercise your brain to find the answer within the pages themselves, rather than turning to your phone for help.(与其依赖你的手机,不如着手设计一个可靠的锻炼计划,使用打印的说明来训练你的记忆力。
There is no denying that digital devices have made our lives extremely convenient.(不可否认,数字设备使我们的生活非常方便)"以及后文"Although we can try to avoid using digital devices, it is undeniable that we will need them for certain tasks.(虽然我们可以尽量避免使用数字设备,但不可否认的是,我们将需要它们来完成某些任务)"可知,第四段先承认数字设备的便利,后需转折指出其负面影响。
It can be a very effective tool, but its usefulness, or uselessness, entirely depends on your attitude. You have to learn how to use it correctly so that it doesn’t take over.(它可以是一个非常有效的工具,但它的有用或无用,完全取决于你的态度。你必须学会如何正确地使用它,这样它才不会占上风)"可知,本句承上启下,既提到技术的存在性,又引出下文关于正确使用技术的讨论。故G选项"尽管有所谓的‘数字健忘症’,但科技确实在我们的生活中占有一席之地"符合语境,故选G。

After breakfast, Rosa headed to the beach. The sand was soft under her feet, and the waves crashed gently against the shore. She walked along the water’s edge, collecting seashells and feeling the warm sun on her back. A group of children were building sandcastles nearby, their laughter filling the air. Rosa joined them and helped build a magnificent sandcastle. Time flew by as she engaged in this simple yet enjoyable activity. When it was time for lunch, she realized she hadn’t once thought about her phone. She went back to their small cabin and enjoyed a joyful lunch with her parents. After lunch, Rosa continued to work on the unfinished puzzle.
Without thinking of her phone, Rosa was absorbed in the puzzle. As she carefully fitted each piece into place, she felt a sense of accomplishment. Soon, her parents joined her, and they worked on the puzzle together. They chatted and laughed, sharing stories and jokes. By the end of the day, the puzzle was finally completed. Looking at the beautiful picture formed by the puzzle pieces, Rosa understood that there were so many wonderful things in life that didn’t involve a phone. This beach vacation without a phone turned out to be the most memorable one she had ever had.
