Leonardo da Vinci is considered one of the greatest painters of all time. He was born in
Italy in 1452. He is still famous today because of his famous paintings, especially the Mona Lisa.
However, not many people know that da Vinci was also an engineer and inventor. He drew plans
and pictures and wrote about his many ideas in his diaries.
Not all of da Vinci’s plans worked out because they weren’t tested. However, some of his
ideas came true. For example, one of his bridges was finally built 500 years after it was drawn,
and flying machines such as helicopters are very common now. Everything in da Vinci’s diary is
written backwards. Why Something da Vinci didn’t want others to know about his ideas as he
wrote his diary in code. Others think it was just easier for him to write this way because he was
left-handed. Either way, da Vinci’s diaries can only be read with a mirror so that you can see the
words in the correct direction.

China is actively working to help people control their weight and live healthier lives. The
government started a three-year weight-control plan from 2024 to 2027 to fight against obesity.
Obesity can cause serious health problems like diabetes and heart disease. Here’s what you should
know about the new guidelines.
First, it’s important to check your BMI (身体质量指数). For adults, a healthy BMI is
between 18.5 and 24. If your BMI is between 24 and 28, you are overweight. 28 or above means
obesity.
Both eating well and exercise matter. Choose healthy foods like brown rice, fresh
vegetables, fish, chicken, and beans. Stay away from fried and sugary treats, and also eat less salt
and oil. Surprisingly, local favorites like Northeast China’s stewed fish and Northwest China’s
chili-oil noodles are part of the healthy eating list.
As for exercise, aim for 150-300 minutes of activities like walking or dancing weekly, and
do strength training twice a week. For example, if you study for long, stand up and exercise for
3-5 minutes every hour. Shanghai schools ensure students exercise for at least two hours daily.
Daily habits count too. Teens should sleep 7 hours every night because bad sleep can make
you increase weight. Try to eat vegetables first, then meat, and finally rice or bread during a meal
to control how much you eat. In short, small changes like choosing water over coke or taking
stairs can lead to a healthier you.

We humans can express emotions by telling others how we feel—but what about animals
67 If they do, which ones Over the past 20 years, researchers have made great progress in this
field.
It’s very hard for us to assess (评估) emotions in animals, because they cannot tell us how
they feel. 68 The most easily noticeable reaction of an animal to an event is how it changes
its behavior. Humans often change facial expressions and body languages depending on whether
we experience a pleasant event or not. 69 For example, changes in the ear position or the
amount of the white of the eyes can show different levels of pain or fear in animals. It is important
to remember that the facial expressions of animals usually look different from those of humans—
joy might not be shown by a smile, while sadness may not be shown by tears.
Another example of animal behavior that is linked to emotions is vocalizations (发 声 ),
which can show stress. 70 Imagine you are singing a song in front of many people, your
voice might be shaking if you are nervous. Researchers have found that the vocalizations of pigs
and cows also change and get less smooth when these animals are under stress.
It seems that animals react to their environments much as humans do. So, we can infer that
animals can feel emotions. 71 If we can better understand how animals react to their
environments, we can improve these environments as well as human-animal relationships.
A.We know this is true for humans, too.
B.It is hard to tell whether they experience emotions.
C.Animals show these characteristic facial expressions as well.
D.Animals’ facial expressions directly reflect their inner emotions.
E.But if emotional things happen, they cause changes in several ways.
F.This might encourage us to rethink the environments of keeping them.

Football: The World’s Most Popular Sport
Football, also called soccer, is one of the oldest sports in the world. It began in England in
the 19th century and quickly spread to other countries. Today, over 250 million people play
football worldwide, and the FIFA World Cup is the most-watched sports event on TV.
A football match has two teams of 11 players each. Players use their feet, heads, or bodies
to move the ball, but they cannot touch it with their hands (except the goalkeeper). The team that
scores the most goals wins. Football is not just a game; it teaches teamwork, discipline (纪律), and

(CSL), but there are not enough high-quality coaches (教练) or training programs (训练计划).
To improve Chinese football, the government (政府) has built more football schools and

When Joe told me his birthday party wasn’t going to be a seafood barbecue again this
year, I almost turned down his invitation. But this escape room experience was so much better!
Joe’s a big HarryPotter fan—he has read all the books—so he chose the School of Witchcraft
and Wizardry escape room for us. The aim was to pass our exams and graduate from wizard

I haven’t done anything like this before, but I love old stories. So to celebrate the end of
term, we went to a pharaoh (法老)-themed escape room. Our task was to find the lost treasure
of the last pharaoh. It was like travelling to another continent (大陆)—the pyramid (金字塔)
was very real. We worked as a team to find clues and solve puzzles. It was satisfying to
complete the task, but I think some of the puzzles were really a piece of cake because we
completed all the tasks in only 49 minutes!Cesar, aged 16, Malaga, Spain

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese way to help people with common health problems. It
has 57 for over 2,000 years in the East, but it isn’t used until recently in the West. It was
introduced in the U. S. A. in 1971 and then accepted by the healthcare system. People are

Football is not just a game; it teaches teamwork, discipline (纪律), and
fair play (公平竞赛).
China and Football
In China, football has a long history too. A game similar to football, called “cuju”, was
played over 2,000 years ago. However, modern (现代的) football in China still faces challenges.
The Chinese National Men’s Team has only entered the FIFA World Cup once, in 2002. Many
young Chinese players dream of joining professional leagues like the Chinese Super League
(CSL), but there are not enough high-quality coaches (教练) or training programs (训练计划).
To improve Chinese football, the government (政府) has built more football schools and
started the “Campus Football” program. This program encourages students to play football in
schools to develop skills early. Additionally, Chinese Women’s Football Team has achieved better
results. They won the Asian Cup nine times and reached the World Cup final in 1999.
