Last summer, Elwell’s husband set up a fan in their yard to drive away mosquitoes (蚊子). Surprisingly,
this fan soon became a peaceful place for the neighborhood squirrels. One morning, after playing in the yard with
her children, Elwell noticed a squirrel appeared in front of the fan, clearly enjoying the cool wind. Elwell said,
“He stayed there for quite some time. Although I don’t like squirrels, I felt pity for the overheated animal.”
The following day, Elwell decided to keep the fan running. To her surprise, two squirrels showed up.
Realizing the chance to help, she began making fruit-filled ice cubes for the squirrels to eat.
Slowly, Elwell found herself charmed by these squirrels. She soon increased her offerings, setting up
several battery-powered fans, and providing other food: nuts, seeds, and corn. Given the dry conditions, she also
put out a small bucket of water.
When she posted a video of her story online, it quickly gained attention. Viewers called it a squirrel spa (水
疗中心) jokingly and even sent her free fans. She now has ten. Inspired, Elwell decided to build a full squirrel
resort (度假村) where they could find food, rest, and relaxation.
“As much as it is for them, it’s for me as well,” Elwell said. Her sons, aged 3 and 10, also loved watching
the squirrels.
Elwell and her husband spend between $100 and $300 monthly on the resort. “It can be pricey,” Elwell said.
“But it brings joy to me and others, so it’s just worth it.”
Elwell keeps a safe distance from the squirrels, who usually run when she gets near them. “I like watching
them and providing food for them,” she said. “Sometimes I’ll look out the window, and they just look at me.” The
squirrel resort has the most visits during the hot summer months. But Elwell makes sure there is food all year

Can a pineapple eat you Now, don’t be afraid. This question isn’t about a sentient pineapple with a taste
for humans. However, even without sentience, the pineapple can eat a little bit of you.
When you eat something, your stomach breaks down its large pieces into smaller ones. In the same way,
pineapple pineapples can “eat” you by breaking down the pieces that make up the cells (细胞) in your body.
Pineapples have certain enzymes (酶) that can break down proteins (蛋白质). To understand this better, you
can imagine a pearl necklace (珍珠项链). Many smaller pieces—the pearls—come together to form the long
necklace of a protein. You can cut a necklace with a pair of scissors. In the same way, the enzymes in pineapples
“cut up” proteins.
All living things are made up of proteins. They are an important part of the cells in your body. If an enzyme
can break down a protein, it has the ability to break cells. When you eat a pineapple, the enzymes in it will break
the cells in your mouth. This is why your mouth will hurt if you eat too many pineapples. But luckily, the cells in
your mouth heal (愈合) fast. And after you have eaten the pineapple, the special enzymes will end up getting
broken down by your stomach. It won’t eat you anymore.
___★ ___ In fact, the enzymes in young pineapples are stronger than those in fully-grown pineapples.
Therefore, some scientists believe that they are created by the plant to stop animals from eating its unripe fruit.
Once the fruit is fully-grown, its enzymes won’t hurt an animal’s mouth and the fruit will be okay to eat.
Another explanation is that the enzymes help the plant to grow. They play an important role in sending
messages to the cells of the plant. These messages tell the cells when to start and stop growing. Without these
enzymes, the seed may not be able to properly develop.
36.Which of the following may play a key role in eating you while you have pineapples
A.A pair of scissors. B.A group of cells.
C.A kind of enzyme. D.A kind of protein.
37.How does the writer explain the fact of enzymes in Paragraph 3
A.By listing numbers. B.By raising a question.
C.By telling a story. D.By giving an example.
38.Which of the following can be put in _★_
A.Why do pineapples have these enzymes
B.Do enzymes help pineapples to grow
C.How long does it take the cells in your mouth to heal
D.Are there other fruits that can eat you
39.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “unripe”
A.Not clean enough. B.Not fully grown.
C.Not very delicious. D.Not quite fresh.
40.What’s the main purpose of the text
A.To offer a wide choice of healthy fruits.
B.To introduce different kinds of enzymes.
C.To tell some useful facts about pineapples.
D.To explain why we should avoid eating pineapples.
