Zara Lachlan, 21 years old, is from the United Kingdom. Setting off from Portugal in a special rowing boat on October 27, she would be rowing across the Atlantic Ocean without support.
The trip is an extreme challenge for anyone, especially for Ms. Lachlan, who was new to the ocean. But her goal was to be the first woman, and the youngest person, to row solo (独自), non-stop, and unsupported across the Atlantic—from mainland Europe to mainland South America.
During the trip, Ms. Lachlan had to clean the bottom of her boat regularly. That meant jumping into the ocean—something she didn’t enjoy at first, since she didn’t swim well. Sometimes, bad weather turned her boat over. After 40 days, her phone got damaged. Along the way, she hurt her arm, cut her leg, and broke a finger. At one point, she was nearly run over by a large ship. Ms. Lachlan says that when she was crossing through the Canary Islands, she would row for 21 hours a day, but only cover 11 miles because of the wind and bad weather.
But there were many bright spots, too. For Ms. Lachlan, the trip was a chance to see nature as few people ever do. She said, “The sunrises and night skies were ‘breathtaking’. I spotted dolphins, sharks, and even killer whales. The trip gave me many memories that will stay with me for life.”
After 97 days, 9 hours, and 20 minutes, Ms. Lachlan arrived in French Guiana, on the coast of South America, on February 1. Though she fell short of the speed record by 19 hours, she took great pride in her achievement.
The journey also serves a philanthropic purpose, with Ms. Lachlan fundraising for organizations promoting women’s participation in sports. She hopes her deed inspires others, especially women and girls, to push their boundaries. “If I can do something that scares me,” she says, “then other women can attempt a challenge of their own.”

It’s both challenging and crucial to recycle wind turbine blades (涡轮机叶片), because those massive blades are built to weather the elements for decades and don’t degrade quickly in landfills. An Australian company might have just hit upon a solution: it’s turning those old blades into surfboards.
Draft Surf has recently been making the decks of surfboards using repurposed turbine blades out on the Gold Coast. They’re fitted with fiberglass blades for added stability and speed, and then the outer shell uses particulate (颗粒) material from the blades to increase strength.
The company, founded by professional surfer Josh Kerr, has already made 10 such surfboards out of 12-foot (3.6-m)-long, 660-lb (300-kg) pieces of unused blades. That’s a departure from its usual process, in which it uses special materials to craft boards over the course of several weeks each. Prices for those typically start at around US $700 and go over $1,000.
The blades come from energy company Acciona’s wind farm in the town of Waubra, Victoria. It’s quite the cooperative partnership, since it offers Draft a way to differentiate its offerings, and gives Acciona a way to responsibly treat blades that can’t be recycled as easily as PET bottles. The firm operates more than 6,500 turbines across several wind energy facilities in Australia and other countries.
Wind turbine blades have previously been turned into asphalt (沥青) for roads, decking materials and park benches and playground equipment. Acciona has also worked with Spanish clothing brand El Ganso to use recycled fiberglass from the blades in the sports shoes.
Now, it’s hard to imagine that Draft Surf’s initiative alone will make a huge impact in the estimated 800,000 tons of turbine blades dropped into landfills each year. But the more applications we can find for unused blades, the easier it becomes to spread out the incoming supply before they’re otherwise just thrown. Bonus points if these initiatives are local, because that reduces the cost and carbon footprint of transporting these enormous components to their final destination.

A company called Colossal Biosciences has created thick-haired mice that they are calling “Colossal Woolly Mice”. These mice are a step toward the company’s goal of recreating the extinct woolly mammoth (猛犸象).
Colossal focuses on replacing extinct animals that went extinct long ago. Its main project is to recreate woolly mammoths. These mammoths, which looked like hairy elephants, died out about 4,000 years ago after the last ice age.
Colossal isn’t trying to bring woolly mammoths back to life. Instead, it wants to change Asian elephant DNA to create an animal similar to a woolly mammoth. The company believes this could help restore balance to the Arctic environment. Some scientists question this.
Actually, working with Asian elephants would be very difficult. They are endangered and take 22 months to have a baby. So, Colossal focuses on mice instead. Mice are more manageable, cost-effective, simpler to handle, and have a quicker reproductive cycle.
For the experiment, researchers looked at how woolly mammoths stayed warm, focusing on their long, thick hair. They compared mammoth DNA to elephant DNA.
Using CRISPR (a gene-editing technology), they edited mouse DNA to change not just one gene, but as many as seven genes at one time. This made the experiment special.
The results were striking. Lead scientist Beth Shapiro said, “We ended up with adorable mice that have longer, woolly, golden coats.” This is good news for Colossal. Since they plan to use elephant DNA to create something like a mammoth, they will need to edit many genes—perhaps as many as 85. The company is pleased that it has been able to target these genes for hair so quickly and accurately.
Many experts are impressed with Colossal’s ability to edit many genes at once. But not everyone thinks the woolly mice are a big deal. Some people question the company’s plans to bring back extinct animals. They say it might be better to help animals that are currently endangered. However, Colossal believes its work could be of assistance in many situations, including protecting endangered animals.

It was all my fault. Can you forgive me ” Tim looked at me with a surprised expression but then he smiled and said, “It’s okay, Tom. I know you didn’t mean it. We’re brothers, and we should always support each other.” I felt a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. From that day on, I learned the importance of honesty and taking responsibility for my actions.
