Last Wednesday, my class visited the Sunshine Town Wastewater Plant. It was an
eye-opening experience.
When we arrived, a worker first introduced the whole process of wastewater treatment
to us. We learned that dirty water from homes and factories goes through several
stages to become clean again. Then we watched a robot working in the plant. It was so
amazing to see it moving around and doing its job efficiently. After that, we had a
hands-on activity. We tried to filter the dirty water using some simple tools like sand
and gravel. Although it was a bit difficult, we were excited to see the water getting
clearer little by little.
This visit made me realize how precious water is. We can't take clean water for
granted. I've decided to save water in my daily life and do more to protect the
environment. I hope everyone can join me in this important task.2024 新人教版七下英语 Unit 7A Day to Remember 单元测试卷
一、阅读理解(20 小题,每小题 2 分,共 40 分)
A 篇
Last month, our school organized a “Water Protection” campaign. As part of it, I visited the
City Wastewater Plant with my classmates. The moment we entered, a large poster caught our eye,
showing how dirty water from factories and homes is turned into clean water through a complex
process. A worker named Mr. Chen guided us through each step.
“First, the water goes through bar screens to remove large pieces of waste, like plastic bottles
and leaves,” he explained. We watched as a machine pulled out a basket full of rubbish from the
flowing water. Next, we entered a room with giant tanks. “Here, beneficial bacteria break down
small particles and organic matter,” Mr. Chen said. The water looked much clearer after this stage.
Finally, we saw the treated water being tested by a robot before being released into the river.
After the tour, we tried a hands-on activity: using a small filter kit to clean dirty water. We
added sand, gravel, and charcoal into a bottle and poured in water mixed with dirt. Slowly, the
water trickled through and became transparent. It was amazing to see the simple “cleaning process”
in action.
Before leaving, we signed a pledge to save water at home—turning off taps while brushing
teeth, reusing water for plants, and never wasting a drop. This experience taught me that clean water
is not free; it takes effort and technology to protect it. I hope everyone will join in and make a
difference.

Today was an unforgettable day! My family and I visited the “Green Future” exhibition at the
Science Museum. As soon as we walked in, a giant model of a wastewater plant greeted us. My
little brother, Tim, thought it was a playground and tried to climb onto the model tanks, but my
parents quickly stopped him with a laugh.
The first section we visited was “Robots for the Planet.” There, I talked to a robot named
EcoBot. I asked, “How can teenagers help protect the environment ” EcoBot replied directly, “You
can reduce waste by using reusable baskets instead of plastic bags, and save energy by turning off
lights when leaving a room.” It even showed me a video of robots sorting waste in a factory. Tim
was so excited that he tried to shake hands with EcoBot, but the robot politely said, “Sorry, I don’t
have hands, but you can help by recycling!”
Next, we entered the “Virtual Reality (VR) Experience” room. We put on VR glasses and saw
a simulation of Earth in 2050 if water pollution continues. The scenes were terrible—dry lakes,
dying forests, and people queuing for clean water. When the simulation ended, my mom said, “We
must act now.” We then tried out a game where we had to match different types of waste with their
recycling bins. My dad won by correctly sorting 10 items in 30 seconds, while I only got 7 right.
Before leaving, we wrote our “Green Promises” on a digital board. I promised to use a basket
for shopping and to teach my classmates about water protection. Tim wrote, “I will not waste water
when brushing my teeth!” It was a day filled with fun and learning, and I realized that everyone,
even kids, can play a role in saving the planet.

Have you ever wondered what happens to the water after you flush the toilet or wash the
dishes Let’s take a deep dive into the world of wastewater treatment, a process that turns “used
water” into “usable water” through science and technology.
Step 1: Pretreatment – The First Line of Defense
When wastewater arrives at the plant, it first passes through bar screens that act like giant
combs, catching large objects such as sticks, toys, and even lost jewelry. These items are removed
and sent to landfills, while the water moves on to the next stage. This step is crucial to prevent
damage to the plant’s machinery.
Step 2: Primary Treatment – Settling the Score
In the primary treatment tanks, the water slows down, allowing heavier solids like sand and
dirt to sink to the bottom (this is called “sludge”), while oil and grease float to the top. Machines
then skim off the grease and remove the sludge, which is later treated to become fertilizer. At this
point, about 60% of the solids are removed from the water.
Step 3: Secondary Treatment – The Bacteria’s Job
This is where the “magic” happens. The water enters aeration tanks filled with millions of
beneficial bacteria. These tiny workers feast on the remaining organic matter, such as food scraps
and soap, breaking them down into harmless substances. Air is pumped into the tanks to keep the
bacteria alive and active. After several hours, the water is nearly 90% clean.
Step 4: Tertiary Treatment – The Final Touch
For water that needs to be extra clean (e.g., for drinking or swimming), it goes through tertiary
treatment. Here, the water is filtered through fine sand or cloth to remove tiny particles, and
chemicals like chlorine are added to kill any remaining bacteria. Some plants even use ultraviolet
(UV) light to disinfect the water.
Step 5: Return to Nature
3
The now-clean water is released into rivers, lakes, or the ocean, where it joins the water cycle
and can be used by humans and animals again. The treated sludge, meanwhile, is turned into
nutrient-rich fertilizer for farms, closing the loop on waste.
Thanks to the hard work of engineers, scientists, and plant workers, millions of gallons of
water are cleaned every day. As consumers, we can help by reducing waste, fixing leaks, and
supporting water-saving technologies. After all, every drop counts!
11. What is the purpose of bar screens in pretreatment
A. To kill bacteria B. To remove large waste
C. To add chemicals D. To make sludge into fertilizer
12.Where do the bacteria work
A. In bar screens B. In primary tanks C. In aeration tanks D. In tertiary filters
13.The underlined word “disinfect” means ______.
A. 染色 B. 冷冻 C. 搅拌 D. 消毒 14.What happens to the sludge after treatment
A. It becomes fertilizer B. It is released into rivers
C. It is burned as energy D. It is stored in landfills
15.What can readers infer from the passage
A. Wastewater treatment is too expensive. B. Everyone should help save water.
C. Bacteria are harmful to water. D. Only 30% of water is recycled.

Maria, a 17-year-old explorer from Brazil, has always been passionate about nature. Last
summer, she joined a scientific expedition to the Amazon rainforest to study water pollution. With a
basket full of research tools and a diary, she and her team walked for days along narrow mountain
roads, documenting the health of local rivers.
One morning, while hiking near the Rio Verde, Maria noticed the water was dark and smelled
terrible. “This isn’t normal,” she told Dr. Santos, the team leader. “Look at these dead fish.” Dr.
Santos sighed, “Untreated wastewater from nearby factories is poisoning the river. The villagers can’
t drink this water, and the wildlife is suffering.” Maria felt a surge of anger and sadness. She
immediately took out her diary and began recording the scene, noting the color of the water and the
types of waste floating on the surface.
Over the next week, the team worked with local communities to set up a small wastewater
treatment system. Maria and her fellow explorers taught the villagers how to build simple filters
using gravel, sand, and charcoal. “First, remove large pieces of waste from the water,” she
explained, demonstrating with a makeshift screen. “Then let the water pass through the filter to
remove smaller particles.” The villagers were eager to learn, and soon everyone was helping to
build filters for their homes.
In the afternoons, Maria led art workshops where children created posters about water
protection. Using natural dyes and recycled paper, they painted scenes of clean rivers and wrote
slogans like “Save the Rio Verde!” These posters were hung in the village square to raise awareness.
4
On the final day of the trip, Maria stood by the river and watched as clear water flowed
through the new filters. “It’s a small step, but it’s a start,” she wrote in her diary. “Exploring the
rainforest has shown me that every person’s effort matters. Whether you’re a scientist, a villager, or
a student, you can make a difference.”
Now back in school, Maria continues to advocate for clean water. She gives talks about her
experience and encourages her classmates to reduce waste and support sustainable practices. “The
Amazon may be far away,” she says, “but water connects us all. Let’s protect it together.”
