this was the moment to tell him everything.
“Can I trust you ” Mary asked.
“Yes—yes!” he whispered.
“Dickon is coming to see you tomorrow. And also … I … I found the door into the secret garden.”
Colin’s eyes grew bigger and bigger.
Mary went on, “Colin, we’re going to take you there!”
The next day, a strong servant carried Colin downstairs and put him in his wheelchair. Dickon was waiting
for him outside. Dickon pushed the wheelchair slowly and carefully. Mary walked next to it. They went across the

“This is where I walked up and down looking for the door,” whispered Mary. They walked a bit further then

The bed was about 45 years old when Mom passed it to me several months after my father died. I decided
to repaint it for my daughter Melanie. The headboard was full of scratches .
Just before I started, I noticed one of the scratches was a date: September 18,1946, the day my parents
were married!
Right above that was another name and date “Elizabeth, October 22,1947.”
“Who is Elizabeth,” I asked my mother on the phone, “what does October 22,1947 mean ” “She’s your
sister,” she answered.
I knew Mom had lost a baby,“You gave her a name ” I asked.
“ Yes. She’s as much a part of me as any of you.”
“Mom, may I come over and talk about the dates on the headboard ” I realized it was full of stories.

Over lunch, Mom told me about January 14,1951, the day when she lost her purse. Three days later, it
arrived in a mail. A letter from a woman named Amy said,“ I took $5 from your wallet to mail it to you. I
hope you’ll understand.” There was nothing missing except that $5.
Then there was George. On December 15,1967, George shot a snake which wanted to hit my brother.
“Who is Ralph ” I asked.
“On February 18, 1968, Ralph saved your brother’s life in a war.” And my nephew’s name was Ralph. Now I knew
why.
“Your Dad and I carved(雕刻)our first date on the headboard the night we married. From then on, it
was a diary of our life. When Dad died, our life was over. But the memories never die.”
When I told my husband about the headboard, he said,“ ”.
We moved the bed with the storybook headboard into our room. We’ve already carved in two dates and
names: Barbara and Jackson. Someday, we’ll tell Melanie the stories from her grandparents’ and parents’ lives.
And Someday the bed will be passed on to her.

Imagine this: you sit down and begin to eat a tasty tomato when, suddenly, it starts to scream! While this
thing will never really happen, a new study showed that plants can make sounds when they are stressed.
Researchers from Tel Aviv University in Israel did the study. They used ultrasonic(超声波)microphones to
record the sounds of tomato plants in boxes.
Three groups of plants were listened to: One group wasn’t watered for five days, another group had the
stems(茎)cut off, and the third group was untouched. It turned out that the first two groups made sounds 30 to 50
times per hour at a frequency of 40 to 80 kilohertz, while the untouched group only made the sound once per
hour. “When tomatoes are not stressed at all, they are very quiet,” Lilach Hadany from the team told CNN.
The researchers don’t know how the sounds are made, but they believe the noise comes from the breaking of
air bubbles in the plants. This means the noise produced by the plants is not intentional or a form of active
communication.
Although there’s no evidence that plants can intentionally communicate, animals and insects may be
“listening in” to benefit from the sound. For example, the sound can tell a butterfly that the plant is under stress
and not suitable to lay eggs on. An animal that wants to eat a plant could also use the sounds to make decisions,

according to Science Focus.
After the experiment, the researchers listened to other plants such as wheat, corn and grapevine, and found
they also made more sounds when stressed. Researchers said the study can benefit farmers in the future, as they
can better take care of the crops by “hearing” how plants feel.
42. What is the finding of the study by researchers from Tel AvivUniversity
A. Plants often feel stressed. B. Some plants can scream.
C. Plants can make sounds when stressed. D. Plants can communicate with each other.
43. Which one of the following groups can replace( 代替)group two
A. A group thatis fully-grown. B. A group which has its fruitspicked.
C. A group that is taken goodcare of. D. A group that has suitabletemperature.
44. What does “active communication” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. Plants make sounds intentionally. B. Air bubbles in the plants can break.
C. Plants receive messages from animals. D. Plants make noise in a high frequency.
45. What might be the benefits of the finding
A. It can help farmers predict weather. B. It will help protect the environment.
C. It helps farmers decide what to plant. D. It may help improve the production of crops.

There is a story in the book History as a Mirror(《资治通鉴》)by Chinese historian Sima Guang.
Zhi Xuanzi was head of a big clan(家族)in the State of Jin (770-476 BC). He wanted a clan
member, Zhi Yao, to be his successor (继承人).However, another man in the clan, Zhi Guo, was
against the idea. Zhi Guo listed some strong points of Zhi Yao. For example, he was good at riding
and shooting. He was decisive and talkative. But Zhi Guo said that he had a big problem with his
morals. He thought he had an unkind heart.
Still, Zhi Xuanzi didn’t listen to the idea. Zhi Yao became head of the clan. With his
leadership abilities, he quickly made his clan the strongest in the State of Jin. However, because of
九 年 级 英 语 第 6 页 共 8 页
his aggressive style, three other clans worked together to fight against the Zhi clan. Finally, the Zhi
clan was beaten.
Sima Guang used this story to stress the importance of morals. Having only talent is not enough
for a great person. He said that excellent people must have both talent and virtue.
Those who have virtue but no talent might work inefficiently. Those who have talent but no
virtue might not use their talent properly. Those who have both talent and virtue were called
xiancai in ancient times. If you ask which one is more important between the two, it must be virtue.
Only if a person has virtue can he or she get on the right track.
In 2018, when President Xi Jinping talked with students and teachers at Peking University, he
mentioned Sima Guang’s ideas. He said good education should develop both a person’s virtues and
talents. Educators must follow this idea. As students, we can also make it our goal.
