Snakes are special creatures in China. For over 100 million years, snakes have lived on
Earth, even before humans existed. In Chinese stories, they are called “little dragons” because
they are brave, wise, and strong.
In ancient tales, snakes are magical helpers. People believed they could bring good luck and
protect homes from harm. A famous story, The Legend of the White Snake, tells of a kind snake
spirit who helps humans with her wisdom. For example, she once saved a village from a terrible
flood by using her magic powers. Snakes also appear in festivals like the Spring Festival,
symbolizing happiness, growth, and new beginnings. During this festival, families hang snake
decorations on doors to scare away bad luck and welcome good fortune.
Snakes shed their skin every few weeks. This reminds people of growth and hope, just like
how a caterpillar becomes a butterfly. In Chinese art, snakes are often drawn with flowers or trees
to show the connection between nature and life. Long ago, artists drew snakes with cicadas
(insects that also shed skin) to teach about life’s cycle of renewal. This tradition continues today in
some rural areas, where people believe snake patterns can protect farms from drought.
Today, the Year of the Snake teaches us to respect nature’s wisdom. Snakes remind us that
even small creatures can teach us big lessons. By studying snakes, we learn to protect the
environment and live in harmony with all living things. Let’s celebrate this year by learning from
their courage and protecting our planet!
27.What do snake decorations symbolize during the Spring Festival

Learn to Love Who You Are
Expect to be treated with kindness, respect and love from a good friend You shouldn’t
have to go far to find them. Start by being your own friend.
What does self-love mean
Self-love means being as kind to yourself as you are to others. Imagine your best friend is
worried or sad, then think about how you’d support them and try to make them feel better.
Self-love means giving yourself the love, care and respect you might give your friends and family.
An expert called Becky Goddard-Hill says, “Self-love means valuing yourself at all times. It’s
speaking to yourself with kindness and encouragement, and it means taking really good care of
your body and mind.”
Why does it matter
Learning to love who you are develops your self-esteem (how you feel about yourself).
This makes you believe in yourself and feel that you deserve (值得) good things—such as kind
friends and fun experiences. It doesn’t mean you’ll be happy all the time, but when you do face
challenges, they’ll be easier to overcome. Studies show that self-love can help friendships,
schoolwork and health.
Love yourself better.
Start by being kind, especially if you make a mistake. Instead of being angry, tell yourself
that everyone gets things wrong sometimes. Then work out what you could do differently next
time. Try not to compare yourself to others and remember that no one is perfect. Focus on yourself
instead. Goddard-Hill suggests writing down your strengths and asking your family and friends for
their thoughts. “Keep the list somewhere safe and look at it often to remind yourself you are
amazing,” she says. Before you go to bed, think about three things that went well for you that day.
“This will help you see the positives (积极的方面) in your life,” says Goddard-Hill.
Positive self-talk.
Goddard-Hill advises saying something nice to yourself three times every morning to
encourage yourself. Here are some ideas.
I can do this.
I like who I am.
I am a good friend.
Take time out for you.
Spend 15 minutes a day giving yourself the attention you deserve, starting with:
Playing with your pet.
Reading a book in bed.
Going for a walk or bike ride.
Listening to your favorite music.
30.Learning to love who you are matters a lot because ________.
A.it makes your self-esteem stronger B.it makes you feel happy all the time
C.it makes you compare yourself to others D.it means you have to be perfect all the time
31.According to the passage, which is a good way to take time out for yourself
A.Watching TV all day. B.Talking to friends for hours.
C.Helping your friends with their problems. D.Playing with your pet dog for 15
minutes.
32.The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.self-love is only about speaking kindly to yourself
B.being kind to yourself can help you face challenges more easily
C.spending time alone is more important than spending time with others
D.making and learning from mistakes is a good way to improve yourself
33.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing the passage
A.To explain how to make new friends. B.To teach us how to improve our friendship.
C.To encourage us to love and value ourselves. D.To discuss the importance of being kind
to friends.

Be Your Own Best Friend
When you make a mistake or say something wrong, it’s easy to be hard on yourself. But
with self-compassion (自我关怀), you can be a friend to yourself.
Compassion means caring about someone who is sad or in pain. Self-compassion is giving
yourself that same care and kindness. When you mess up or when you’re trying hard to do
something new, being kind to yourself can help. Dr. Kristin Neff, an expert (专家) on this topic,
says self-compassion has three parts: being kind to yourself, understanding that everyone has hard
times and noticing your feelings.
Self-compassion can lower stress, help you stay strong and make you feel better. When you’
re kind to yourself, you can think more clearly and see a way forward. Psychologist (心理学家)
Suzy Reading says self-compassion helps you be your own best friend and feel at peace.
There are many ways to be kind to yourself.
Talk to yourself using kind words. Notice the words you use. It’s helpful to try calling
yourself a kind name, like “my dear” or “buddy” because this can help you speak gently to
yourself.
Name the feelings you’re experiencing. When you feel upset, you might feel angry,
disappointed, sad or anxious. At this point, you need to name the feeling and tell yourself it’s OK
you feel this way.
Take care of your body. You can give yourself a hug, go for a walk, take a few slow and
deep breaths or draw a picture.
Try a “gentle touch”. You can hold your own hand for comfort; place your hands on your
heart to feel calm; rest your chin (下巴) in your hands to relax. Say kind words to yourself while
doing these things.
Remember, be kind to yourself, and always do your best—that’s enough.
34.What is compassion
35.According to Suzy Reading, how does self-compassion help you
36.Why is it helpful to try calling yourself a kind name
37.Which of the ways do you prefer to practice self-compassion How
