It was a boiling summer day in July. The sun shone brightly and the air felt heavy with heat. When I was

Embroidery (刺绣) is an important art form in Chinese culture. The most famous embroidery styles are Su
embroidery from Suzhou, Shu embroidery from Sichuan, Xiang embroidery from Hunan and Yue embroidery from
Guangdong.
Shu embroidery is the oldest of the four. It dates back to the Han Dynasty (202 BC-220 AD). People sold it
to other countries through the South Silk Road.
Embroidery takes time and patience. Since modern machines can make cheaper embroidery products today,
fewer people buy handmade Shu embroidery products. There are also very few young embroiderers. So the skill is
in danger of dying out. To protect the skill, Shu embroidery was added to China’s intangible cultural heritage list
(非物质文化遗产目录) in 2006.
Meng Dezhi has been making Shu embroidery for over forty years. The 64-year-old woman is a
national-level inheritor (传承人) of the art form. She used to work at the Chengdu Shu Embroidery Factory. But in
2006, the factory went broke and Meng lost her job.
Wanting to save the art, Meng wanted to have her own place and teach Shu embroidery to others. It’s hard
work. Workers need to divide each silk thread (线) into more than ten or even thirty pieces. In 2016, Baidu invited
Meng to make a homepage logo for Qixi Festival. It was a small logo, but it required the use of 45 types of sewing
techniques (针法) and 35,000 stitches (针).
Meng is trying to save Shu embroidery by teaching in different universities and communities. She believes

Etymology (语源学) is the study of words and word roots. Etymologists’ work may sound like boring.
Etymologists actually have an interesting job. They are in many ways just like archaeologists (考古学家) digging
up the history of people and events. The special aspect (方面) of etymology is that it digs up history through the
words and phrases that are left behind.
The English language is a great field to explore history through words. English has a number of words. In
some way, this is because it has its ability to take in foreign words so easily. For example, “English” words such as
kindergarten (from German) and cheetah (from Hindi) have become part of the language with little or no change
from their primary sounds and spellings. So English-language etymologists have a large world of words to explore,

One of the biggest questions English language experts have worked on is how English came to have the
phrase OK, which is a puzzle even to this day. Unless you spell it Okay, it is hard even to call it a word.
OK became widely used around the time of Martin Van Buren’s run for president in 1840. His nickname was
Old Kinderhook. It is likely that Van Buren could be called its primary source (来 源 ). Etymologists will
doubtlessly keep searching for the primary source. However, it is clear that OK’s popularity and fame have topped
those of the American president to whom it has been most clearly connected with.

Embroidery (刺绣) is an important art form in Chinese culture. The most famous embroidery styles are Su
embroidery from Suzhou, Shu embroidery from Sichuan, Xiang embroidery from Hunan and Yue embroidery from
Guangdong.
Shu embroidery is the oldest of the four. It dates back to the Han Dynasty (202 BC-220 AD). People sold it
to other countries through the South Silk Road.
Embroidery takes time and patience. Since modern machines can make cheaper embroidery products today,
fewer people buy handmade Shu embroidery products. There are also very few young embroiderers. So the skill is
in danger of dying out. To protect the skill, Shu embroidery was added to China’s intangible cultural heritage list
(非物质文化遗产目录) in 2006.
Meng Dezhi has been making Shu embroidery for over forty years. The 64-year-old woman is a
national-level inheritor (传承人) of the art form. She used to work at the Chengdu Shu Embroidery Factory. But in
2006, the factory went broke and Meng lost her job.
Wanting to save the art, Meng wanted to have her own place and teach Shu embroidery to others. It’s hard
work. Workers need to divide each silk thread (线) into more than ten or even thirty pieces. In 2016, Baidu invited
Meng to make a homepage logo for Qixi Festival. It was a small logo, but it required the use of 45 types of sewing
techniques (针法) and 35,000 stitches (针).
Meng is trying to save Shu embroidery by teaching in different universities and communities. She believes
