Frenchman Donates Photo Album Documenting Japan’s Wartime Crimes
Frenchman Marcus. Detrez was looking through an old photo album showing his grandfather's rich life in Shanghai during the 1930s when a picture suddenly revealed the terrible reality of war to him. The photograph shows a civilian, whose head has been completely blown off, lying on the ground.
The discovery made in the garage of his family home in 2021 put the 26-year-old on a truth-seeking journey that offered further evidence of wartime crimes committed by Japanese soldiers during China's fight against Japanese invasion(1931-1945), as well as the resilience of local residents－which is all documented in a collection of 622 photographs,
Detrez, accompanied by two friends, arrived in Beijing on Saturday to donate the photos to China. They also plan to visit Shanghai to see venues shown in the pictures.The pictures are now stored in a leather, handheld briefcase－the same one that his grandfather used when traveling back from China many decades ago.
As he opened the suitcase and sifted through the pictures in waterproof covers and envelopes, Detrez remained calm while handling some bloody scenes. But he said he has had many sleepless nights since finding these pictures, and his senior family members have been deeply hurt for many years by the memories. “We've been carrying a heavy(emotional) burden.” said Bastien Ratat, one of Detrez’s friends assisting with the donation. But they have persisted, driven by a desire to spread awareness about the truth of a part of history that they believe is not fully understood by the world.
Despite the fact that looking at these pictures is a painful experience, Detrez said it is important to reflect on such historical events. “As human beings, we have made some mistakes, and we should make sure that we learn from them,” he said. “I hope that we can tell the truth and inspire the future generations. If we don't tell the truth, if we deny the truth, we just go into a big war.”

If the other paintings in the room that houses Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum in Paris could talk, they might be whispering “Good riddance(解脱)!” to one another right now. That’s owing to the French government’s announcement that the world’s most famous painting is to be removed from the Salle des Etats and rehoused in its own space in the Louvre with a dedicated entrance.
This particular space, accessible independently from the rest of the museum, will allow Mona Lisa’s conditions of exhibition, presentation and interpretation it deserves. The move that aims to relieve the Louvre’s overcrowding problem isn’t just great for Mona Lisa. It could also allow the dozens of other artworks in the Salle des Etats by the likes of Titian, Tintoretto and Veronese to finally receive their due.

Penguins have a way to dispose of mercury through their feathers, which they molt (换羽) regularly. Sontag, now a polar researcher at Rutgers University, and his team analyzed these molted feathers to determine where penguins were exposed to mercury. They found a clear relationship between mercury levels and carbon-13, which varies geographically and acts as a marker for where penguins feed or breed (繁殖). The study confirmed this pattern across seven penguin species in the Southern Ocean, revealing higher mercury exposure in northern, warmer regions with higher carbon-13 levels.
The findings suggest that penguins could serve as bio-indicators, living trackers of environmental pollutants. By measuring mercury in feathers, scientists can track the metal’s movement through the oceanic food web over time, rather than just at a single moment. For example, penguin species living near each other showed different mercury and carbon-13 levels due to varying migration and feeding patterns. These data could be modeled into a map-like database to aid conservation and polar research.
Marine scientist Míriam Gimeno Castells notes that penguins are mid-level predators (捕食性动物), and undergo dramatic molts, making it easy to collect feathers from many individuals. The molted feathers contain mercury that gets into their body during the non-breeding season.
Sontag plans to collect newer feathers from different species and compare mercury levels in penguins’ blood and their food with those in their feathers. As for the penguins’ health, senior author John Reinfelder makes it clear that they have not yet been exposed to poisonous mercury levels. “The penguins will be okay,” he says.
