Born in Germany, Kathrine Switzer was an athletic and driven child. As a young girl, Switzer was active in various sports, but she faced huge troubles as there was a widely held attitude that women in sports were unattractive. In high school, she began to take running more seriously, often training in secret. She developed her determination (意志) and running skills through continuous practice, often running long distances to build her stamina (耐力).
Switzer attended Syracuse University, where she trained with the men’s cross-country team. During this time, Switzer decided to run the Boston Marathon. As there was nothing in the official rulebook preventing women from entering, she signed up for the 1967 race. She used the name “K. V. Switzer”. As a result, race officials did not realise she was a woman.
But when the race officials discovered she was a woman they tried to stop her. Fortunately, her boyfriend Tom Miller and a group of men runners formed a sort of protective curtain around her. Finally, she completed the race in four hours and twenty minutes.
After that, she decided to help other women athletes. The Boston Marathon finally began accepting women runners in 1972, and three years later, Switzer placed second at the race with a time of 2:51:37, her personal best. In 1977, she created the Avon International Running Circuit, a worldwide series of women’s races that lay the groundwork for the women’s marathon to become an Olympic event in 1984.
Switzer went on to found the women’s running club, 261 Fearless, and entered the National Women’s Hall of Fame in 2011. Still an active runner, Switzer even completed the Boston Marathon in 2017-fifty years after her historic run.
“When I go to the Boston Marathon now, I have wet shoulders — women fall into my arms crying,” she said. “They’re crying for joy because running has changed their lives. They feel nothing is impossible.”
24. How did Switzer train as a young girl
A. By following a professional plan. B. By joining a cross-country team.
C. By keeping running secretly. D. By seeking help from her coach.
25. What can we learn about Switzer in the 1967 marathon
A. She reached her personal best. B. She broke a record set by men.
C She lent a hand to another runner. D. She was the first woman to complete it.
26. What is the result of Switzer’s 1977 running series
A. 261 Fearless was founded. B. She won many national honours.
C. Women’s marathon entered the Olympics. D. Boston Marathon accepted women runners.
27. What is the best title of the text
A. Kathrine Switzer: A Pioneer in Women's Sports
B. The 1967 Boston Marathon: A Race Against Time
C. Seeking Possibilities: A Woman of Olympic Spirits
D. Breaking Limits: The Story of a Marathon Champion

Never judge a book by its cover—even if the cover doesn’t say much at all. The first thing customers see when they walk into the Strand Book Store in Manhattan is a table of nameless books with covers wrapped like Christmas presents and titles replaced by general descriptions. The store calls the activity “Blind Date With a Book”.
“People love it” Paul Colarusso, the communications director for the Strand, said, “We put it right at the front of the store because it quite literally stops people in their tracks.” “People are attracted to the element of surprise, which focuses attention and creates a dopamine (多巴胺) response,” Mr. Tobin, an associate professor at Case Western University, said. Meanwhile, stores have found a new way to sell books that are overlooked because they are not new, best-selling or penned by a famous author.
Much like real dating, there’s no perfect science, and an element of trial and error is involved. Fantasy and mystery books work well. Forgotten books from the past are great too. When in Rome by Sarah Adams is described as “Freshly Baked Slow Bum Rom-com”, and Spoiler Alert by Olivia Dade becomes a “You’ve Got Mail-esque Romance”.
But not all bookstores have embraced the trend. Dozens of bookstore owners around the country said they did not know what “Blind Date Books” were. Others didn’t participate in the trend because store policy prohibits returns or exchanges which are necessary if someone has picked up a book they have already read.
On a warm Friday morning, the bookstore is packed. About half the customers stop at the “Blind Date Books” display by the entrance, closely looking over the neatly drawn, wrapped covers. Heather Toner buys one. “Throwing caution to the wind and letting someone else choose for me just sort of feels like a nice change of pace,” Ms. Toner, a reader, said. “I never went on a real blind date. ‘Blind Date With a Book’ is kind of my speed.”
28. What makes “Blind Date With a Book” appealing according to Mr. Tobin
A. The ability to choose certain titles. B. The attractiveness of the packaging.
C. The excitement of an unforeseen choice. D. The identification of dopamine response.
29. How does the activity benefit bookstores
A. It enriches customers’ choices. B. It satisfies readers’ special needs.
C. It simplifies shopping procedures. D. It helps market less-known books.
30. Why do some bookstore owners refuse to participate in the “Blind Date Books” trend
A. They think the packaging is too complicated.
B. Their store policy does not allow returns or exchanges.
C. They believe the trend is not suitable for their customers.
D. They are not familiar with the concept of “Blind Date Books”.
31. Which words best describe Heather Toner’s attitude towards the activity
A. Open and adventurous. B. Cautious and reserved.
C. Tolerant and indecisive. D. Dismissive and doubtful.
D
Endangered polar bears are breeding (繁殖) with grizzly bears (灰熊), creating “pizzly” bears, which is being driven by climate change, scientists say.
As the world warms and Arctic sea ice thins, starving polar bears are being forced ever further south, where they meet grizzlies, whose ranges are expanding northwards. And with that growing contact between the two come increasing hybrids (杂交种).
With characteristics that could give the hybrids an advantage in warming northern habitats, some scientists guess that they could be here to stay. “Usually, hybrids aren’t better suited to their environments than their parents, but these hybrids are able to search for a broader range of food sources,” Larisa DeSantis, an associate professor of biological sciences at Vanderbilt University, told Live Science.
The rise of “pizzly” bears appears with polar bears’ decline: their numbers are estimated to decrease by more than 30% in the next 30 years. This sudden fall is linked partly to “pizzly” bears taking up polar bears’ ranges, where they outcompete them, but also to polar bears’ highly specialized diets.
“Polar bears mainly consumed soft foods even during the Medieval Warm Period, a previous period of rapid warming,” DeSantis said, referring to fat meals such as seals. “Although all of these starving polar bears are trying to find alternative food sources, like seabird eggs, it could be a tipping point for their survival.” Actually, the calories they gain from these sources do not balance out those they burn from searching for them. This could result in a habitat ready for the hybrids to move in and take over, leading to a loss in biodiversity if polar bears are replaced.
“We’re having massive impacts with climate change on species,” DeSantis said. “The polar bear is telling us how bad things are. In some sense, “pizzly” bears could be a sad but necessary compromise given current warming trends.”
32. Why do polar bears move further south
A. To create hybrids. B. To expand territory.
C. To relieve hunger. D. To contact grizzlies.
33. What makes “pizzly” bears adapt to natural surroundings better than their parents
A. Broader habitats. B. More food options.
C. Climate preference. D. Improved breeding ability.
34. What does the underlined phrase “a tipping point” in paragraph 5 refer to
A. A rare chance. B. A critical stage.
C. A positive factor. D. A constant change.
35. What’s the main idea of the text
A. Polar bears are changing diets for climate change.
B. Polar bears have already adjusted to climate change.
C. “Pizzly” bears are on the rise because of global warming.
D. “Pizzly”bears have replaced polar bears for global warming.

【答案】I finally made a decision and called my parents into my bedroom. With a trembling voice, I showed them the money and confessed everything that had happened. They listened quietly, their expressions shifting from shock to concern. "We can't keep this, it should be returned," my mom said firmly. My dad nodded in agreement. I felt a pang of disappointment but also a sense of relief. I knew they were right, and I was proud of myself for making the honest choice.
Though surprised, the shop owner helped find out the family’s telephone number. The next day, my parents and I drove to the address provided.
