Helen Cowan had decided to sit in the garden one evening when she heard a loud noise. As she walked to the front of the house, she saw some people crowding on the sidewalk outside.

Helen knew about first aid and had first aid training. She ran back inside her home to get several thick towels to stop the bleeding.
As Helen returned to the boy with the towels someone from the crowd had called an ambulance, but the young man was still bleeding heavily. “On my return, I could see that the other people were afraid to come forward and help. I used the towel as best I could to press the wound (伤口) until help arrived,” Helen said. Then she successfully controlled the bleeding and comforted the young man while waiting for help to arrive. Before long, the ambulance team arrived.
Unluckily, doctors weren’t able to save the man’s leg, but they did save his life—and Helen’s actions played a key role. Without the first aid skills Helen used, the results of this accident could have been far worse.

I still remember what we were doing when we heard the news about Yuan Longping’s death.
It was a Saturday afternoon. I was doing my homework in my living room. My father was reading a newspaper, and my mother was cooking in the kitchen. Suddenly, my father’s phone rang. It was the news about Mr. Yuan. My father told my mother and me. We were all very shocked and sad. We stopped what we were doing and sat together in silence.
I will always remember this day because Mr. Yuan was a great scientist. He helped feed millions of people with his hybrid rice. He was like a hero to us. Also, I will remember it because my family and I shared this moment of sadness together. It made us realize how important he was to everyone.
