I felt panicked when my wife and I decided to adopt a child. I expected joy and excitement, but I had to face a series of “what if’s”.
What if the child isn’t anything like me It’s natural for parents to look for their reflection in their children and live their lives indirectly through their children’ success. But I knew it might be a good thing not to place my ego (自我) on the child, who doesn’t share my genes.
But what if I don’t love this child How could I just decide to love a stranger But as we got physical examinations, did interviews, filled out forms, and talked to lawyers, he didn’t seem like a stranger when I first met him three days after his birth. With one arm gently holding his whole body, I looked into his eyes and knew that my heart belonged to him.
But what if he later asks about who he is and why he is adopted This was not a “what if” I could completely work through in advance. But since our adoption was open and we had met his birth parents, I decided to keep a written record of the whole adopting process, including the joy and love he has brought to us. If he is full of questions and confusion when he is sixteen, I hope to hand him this record.
Of course, other “what if’s” that threatened to decrease our love and courage may come. But all of them can be answered or overcome. And we did adopt this child whom I wouldn’t trade for anything in the world. And this new world of fatherhood has become my heart’s true home.

Some school uniforms could be preventing young students from being physically active, research suggests.
There is a WHO’s minimum recommendation of 60 minutes of physical activity a day across a whole week. In countries where most schools require students to wear uniforms, fewer young students reach that standard, especially girls. They have a gap of 7.6 percentage points with boys, according to a study by the University of Cambridge.
This gap between girls and boys of primary-school age is greater than that between secondary-school girls and boys. Because younger children may get more unintentional exercise throughout the day — like running, climbing and active play at break and lunchtimes. The findings confirm earlier evidence — that girls feel less comfortable participating in active play if they are wearing certain types of clothing such as skirts or dresses.
A 2021 study in England found students were deterred from participating in certain activities by the design of girls’ uniforms. Other studies have suggested girls are more uneasy about engaging in physical activity, because they are wearing uniforms in which they do not feel comfortable. Dr Esther van Sluijs, senior author and MRC investigator said, “Girls might feel less confident about doing certain sports if they are wearing a skirt or dress. Social norms (规范) and expectations tend to influence their thoughts — what they can do or cannot do in these clothes. Unfortunately, when it comes to promoting physical health, that’s a problem.”
Dr Mairead Ryan, a researcher at Cambridge said, “Schools often prefer to use uniforms for various reasons. We are not trying to suggest an overall ban on them, but to present new evidence to support decision-making. School communities could reconsider the design, which might restrict any opportunities for physical activity throughout the day.”
8.Who are most probably affected by uniforms
A.Primary-school girls. B.Primary-school boys.
C.Secondary-school girls. D.Secondary-school boys.
9.What did previous studies indicate
A.Girls have severe health problems.
B.Girls don’t like taking physical exercise.
C.Girls feel uncomfortable exercising in skirts.
D.Girls don’t respect the social norms of dressing.
10.What does the underlined word “deterred” most probably mean in paragraph 4
A.Disqualified. B.Discouraged. C.Protected. D.Excused.
11.What is the probable purpose of this passage
A.To criticize the quality of school uniforms.
B.To encourage students to do physical activities.
C.To call on students not to wear school uniforms.
D.To suggest changing the design of school uniforms.
Between 245 and 66 million years ago, dinosaurs ruled the land. Some groups of dinosaurs developed to be able to fly, but experts thought they never truly swam — apart from walking in shallow water. However, dinosaur bones that were discovered in Africa have now challenged this theory.
The bones came from a group of dinosaurs called hadrosaurids (鸭嘴龙). Scientists describe them as “duck-billed” because their mouths and noses were shaped a bit like ducks’ bills (喙). They first appeared in North America during a period known as the late Cretaceous — between 100million and 66 million years ago. They eventually spread into Europe and Asia, which were connected to North America at that time.
However, scientists were very puzzled by the bones appearing in Africa. Today, Africa is connected to Asia due to the land movement. But in the Cretaceous period, Africa was then a huge island separated from Asia and Europe by sea. So how did the hadrosaurids get there, across hundreds of miles of water, millions of years ago
According to a new scientific study, the bones they found — from a skull, an arm and a leg — came from three species, one smaller and two larger. In fact, scientists think the skull belongs to an entirely new duck-billed species, named Minqaria bata (咪龙). This was between three and four meters long and was about the size of a pony. The scientists say their body structure was similar to European duck-billed dinosaurs.
The study says the only possible conclusion is that the duck-billed dinosaurs must have swum or floated to Africa. Dr. Nicholas Longrich, one of the authors, said, “The Cretaceous lasted nearly100 million years. A lot of strange things would happen in that time — including dinosaurs crossing seas.” Dr. Longrich described the hadrosaurids in Africa as the “most surprising find” of his career. He said a duck-billed dinosaur was “the last thing” he would have imagined finding in Africa.
12.What did experts believe about dinosaurs before finding the bones
A.They had no ability to swim. B.They had power to rule the world.
C.They had existed for 100 million years. D.They had a similar appearance to ducks.
13.What confused the scientists about hadrosaurids
A.The origin of species. B.The difference in size.
C.The means of migrating. D.The complexity of structure.
14.What did Dr. Longrich mean in the last paragraph
A.He would no longer study dinosaurs. B.Strange things happened to dinosaurs.
C.Nothing else could be found in Africa. D.He hadn’t expected to find such dinosaur.
15.Which can be the best title for the text
A.Dinosaurs Swam to Africa B.Dinosaurs Ruled the Land
C.The Cretaceous Time Was Strange D.New Duck-billed Species Were Found

I can walk the path to the lake near our house in the dark without a flashlight—my feet know the way. Around my family’s cottage in Ontario, there are more than 100 acres to explore, crossed by creeks (小溪) and valleys. I’ve been hiking up the mountains, crossing those creeks on that land for the past thirty years, so it was a shock when I got lost last winter.
Late one bright, afternoon in February, I put on my snowshoes and headed northwest from the house. While making my way up the long, gradual slope, I stopped to appreciate the beauty of nature. Finally, I arrived at the top of the mountain. With towering trees that seemed to touch the sky and colorful wildflowers under my feet, I took a deep breath and yelled at the remote mountain. I was totally carried away by the beauty of nature.
As the sun set, my feet and fingers started to feel cold. I decided to head back. I didn’t turn back the way that I had just come. I changed my direction and chose the steep side of the hill. I had a general sense that ahead was the creek that led to the valley, so I walked slowly, trusting that the creek would lead me to the road to my cottage.
I made my way down the hillside. Along the way, I picked up sticks and explored my way through this strange woods. I used my phone to photograph the trees, mountains, and anything that caught my eyes. As it was gradually growing dark, I began to doubt this route. Where was the creek Had I walked in the wrong direction
I pulled out my phone to check my location, but it died in my hand. That sense of doubt now felt more like panic: I didn’t even have any food or a flashlight. It was getting darker and darker. I was completely alone, lost in the wilderness. I walked nervously, tripping over things in my path and feeling frightened with a racing heartbeat. I thought I was going to die here in the woods.

47.But then, as I was about to give up hope, I saw a weak light in the distance. As I came closer, the light grew brighter. It was coming from a small area in the forest. In the center stood a tiny wooden house, its windows shining warmly in the darkness. With a feeling of hope, I ran towards the house and knocked on the door. A man opened it, with his face filled with worry. “Are you lost ” he asked. I nodded, too tired to speak.
The house’s owner welcomed me inside. I sat down on a chair and the man offered me food and water. We talked for hours about his life in the forest. His eyes told me that he had found peace in that wilderness. He kindly allowed me to stay overnight at his house. As the sun rose above the treetops, I knew that it was time to leave. The man offered to guide me out of the forest. From then on, we became friends. I learned something valuable from my journey - that sometimes when we are lost, we find unexpected treasures.
