I carried the flame (火焰) in 1984 in the torch relay (火炬传递) as it made its way across the country to the Olympics in Los Angeles. What a great honour it was. I wasn’t some successful Olympic athlete. I only carried it through a corner of Connecticut. My dad did some voluntary work for the Olympics that year, and he thought it was something I would enjoy.
Let me go back to that night in May,1984. The flame had just begun its route across America, covering 15,000 kilometres. That first day it moved slowly from New York, each runner carrying it for a kilometre. Some of the runners were legendary, like the granddaughter of gold medalist Jesse Owen. Others were common people like me and supporters of the cause.
I had been sent a uniform and the official torch. I held it as I stood waiting in the dusk for the flame to arrive. Part of me wondered if it would even arrive. Would they ever find enough runners to cover that enormous distance Other people gathered together in the dark on the sidewalk. What would they see
All at once it happened. A runner appeared and lit my torch. I was sent on my way, jogging down the highway. If I had worried about finding my way in the dark, there was no question now. People lined the road, clapping and shouting as I passed. Actually, it was not for me but for the free expression of athletic skill; the celebration of talent and dedication.
All too soon it was over. But not really over. I passed the flame on to the next runner, who would pass it along to the next and next until it finally reached gold medalist Rafer Johnson who would carry it into the L. A. Coliseum.
How lucky I was to play a part! But I think we all have these opportunities to carry the torch, for we are all the light of the world. Therefore, why not let your light shine

Different dietary habits and food consumption have their own geographical (地理的) distribution, especially in China. The Chinese people have developed many traditional foods through their long history and also led to a rich and diverse food culture. Due to the geographical environment, there are some dietary and cultural differences between Northern and Southern China.
Because of the cold and the vastness of the plain, Northeast China grow many cold-resistant crops, which become the base for Northeastern cuisine. Di San Xian is the most distinctive dish in Northeast China, which consists of potatoes, eggplants and green peppers. Northeast Chinese dishes feature large quantity and fullness, which may come from the heroic characteristics of the Northeast people.
Located in the southern part of China, Guangdong is a relatively warm and humid (潮湿的) region. Due to the climate, the leading food in Guangdong has been tropical crops such as rice since ancient times. The steamed rice noodle roll or Chang Fen, a traditional Cantonese food, has several characteristics brought by the geographical environment of Guangdong. In this dish, starch (淀粉), rice flour and water are mixed to form a paste. Then the paste is spread across a multi-layered box or cloth to steam and enhanced with meat, fish or shrimp.
Sichuan is located in the middle of China. Its main geographical feature is the Sichuan Basin. The basin nature of Sichuan means that it is surrounded by high mountains with high temperatures and humidity. Since peppers were introduced into China, Sichuan has been the capital of spicy food in China because its unique geographical environment is very suitable for the growth of peppers. Peppers are often used to cook Sichuan dishes, and chicken with chilies, or La Zi Ji, is a popular one. Chicken, salt, peppers and other simple ingredients can cook a deliciously spicy meal. The spicy flavor can also stimulate people’s appetite.
8. What do we know about the crops used in Di San Xian from paragraph 2
A. They are very easy to cook.
B. They are native to Northeast China.
C. They are resistant to cold weather.
D. They are cheaper than other vegetables.
9. Which aspect of Chang Fen does paragraph 3 focus on
A. Its true origin. B. Its health benefits.
C. Its cooking process. D. Its major features.
10. What role did the introduction of peppers play in Sichuan
A. It led to the popularity of spicy dishes there.
B. It caused a decline in traditional Sichuan cuisine.
C. It transformed Sichuan into a major spice exporter.
D. It made Sichuan cuisine popular in Northern China.
11. What is the text mainly about
A. Every country has its own unique food.
B. Each place has its geographical features.
C. People have different consumption habits.
D. Geography can affect people’s dietary habits.
D
Sea turtles (海龟) live life on the move. Adult sea turtles move repeatedly between feeding and breeding (繁殖) areas. So the question naturally arises: How do turtles guide their journeys across vast water without landmarks Thirty years of work with turtles has provided a framework for understanding those remarkable travels.
A sea turtle’s first migration seems a simple task: swimming toward the open ocean and away from land. Newly hatched sea turtles cannot see the direction of the open ocean. When entering the sea, they dive under the surface, use water motion caused by waves to determine the direction, and then swim directly toward open water.
Sea turtles can also keep a course in one direction using biological compasses based on the sun’s or the earth’s magnetic field (磁场). For young turtles, however, a compass alone isn’t enough to keep them safe. Fortunately, the earth’s magnetic field provides turtles with a map. Several magnetic features are geographically different so that every place has its own magnetic address, which allows sea turtles to sense their present magnetic addresses and set course for the magnetic addresses of their destinations. Sea turtles are born with the ability to recognize specific magnetic addresses in the ocean and to swim in directions that keep them safe. For example, Florida turtles don’t travel too far north into dangerous cold waters.
The amazing magnetic navigation (导航) of turtles is of importance. Conservationists need to make sure that turtles can recognize their birthplace and the feeding area in a natural magnetic environment. Animals programmed to migrate in the Atlantic Ocean are unlikely to navigate properly in the Pacific and vice versa. If researchers keep such needs in mind, it seems likely that the same skills that guided turtles for the last 120 million years will keep them on track for the next 120 million years.
12. Why is the question raised in the first paragraph
A. To make a prediction.
B. To come up with a solution.
C. To introduce the topic of the text.
D. To describe sea turtles’ life cycle.
13. What do we know about newborn sea turtles from paragraph 2
A. Their motion changes how waves are moving.
B. They can directly identify the ocean’s direction.
C. Their journey to the open ocean is quite simple.
D. They rely on sea waves to figure out the direction.
14. What does the “map” mentioned in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Approaches to escaping from enemies.
B. Potential dangers of sea turtles’ journeys.
C. Specific changes of sea turtles’ destinations.
D. Signals offered by each area’s magnetic features.
15. In which aspect does studying turtles’ magnetic navigation play an important role
A. Protecting the species.
B. Recognizing sea animals.
C. Collecting more turtles.
D. Improving sea conditions.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
How not to be bored when you have to wait
I travel a lot. On the open road are always interesting people and new places. ____16____ It is the constant waiting. When I travel, I wait to board the plane, wait in restaurants, wait to check into hotels, and wait on and on.
For years, I have tried to design my life in such a way to lower how much time I have to spend waiting: I ask for the check as soon as the server brings me my lunch; I have all the subscriptions (订阅) that help to streamline one’s passage through the airport; ____17____ No doubt my waiting time is a smaller part of what it used to be.
But recently, I have realized that my strategy helps just a little, just for a while. Despite many improvements, I’m not any less troubled by the waiting I still have to endure. Another waiting strategy most people have turned to of late is distraction by electronic devices. You might think that this solution must work. ____18____
The root problem with waiting for something we want is that it produces two conditions that humans hate: boredom and lack of autonomy (独立自主). One way of understanding boredom is that it’s a state in which you fail to find meaning. Standing in line, knowing that you’re doing so to get or do something but are being forced to spend the time unproductively, is what feels meaningless.
____19____ It means that your behavior can’t change the situation at hand. Think of the last time you waited at an airport for a long-delayed flight, and the annoyance that came from not being able to do anything about it except wait.
The best way to lower the misery of waiting, then, turns out to be not to change the world but to change oneself to live better in a world of waiting. ____20____ Most of us go about our days feeling dissatisfied with the world, because it is failing in some way to conform (符合) to our preferences and convenience. To do so is like canoeing down a river and railing against the winding course it takes. Why not simply follow those bends as best we can
A. In fact, it might not work at all.
B. We want to be in control of our lives.
C. Waiting also lowers your sense of autonomy.
D. But there is one thing about travel that annoys me.
E. I choose hotels that have self-service check-in facilities.
F. It leads us to think about the root problem with waiting.
G. That insight can apply not just to waiting but to life itself.

My job in the hospital was to provide comfort to those nearing the end of their lives. The people I cared for became like family to me. One woman, Mrs. Wiggins, in particular, became a dear friend. Her children rarely visited, especially toward the end. At first, she seldom spoke, just lying still. But over time, we became close as I learned more about her.
She had three children, and her husband had passed away many years earlier. Her children were too busy to visit her, leaving her feeling very lonely. I tried to make her feel loved, as if the hospital were her home. She shared stories from her past until my shift (轮班) ended, often repeating them during my next shift.
One night, I took an early shift and went to sit beside her. She whispered that her time was near. I left to call her children so they could come quickly. When I returned to her room, she was sleeping. I leaned close to her and asked if she had dreamed of anything. She smiled gently and said she had dreamt of raspberries (覆盆子) and cream.
I must have looked surprised at such a strange answer. Mrs. Wiggins softly laughed and said she would explain. “When I was a little girl, my aunt would take me out for lunch and let me order anything I wanted. For dessert, we’d share a bowl of raspberries and cream. I loved the special taste—it was so smooth, rich, and pure. However, as I grew older and had my own children, I had to spend all my savings to support them. I couldn’t afford to spend money on something like raspberries and cream.”
She continued, “I just didn’t think I deserved it. But promise me you’ll fill your life with raspberries and cream!” Tears streamed down my face as I smiled and held her hand tightly. Then I gently kissed her on the cheek, my voice trembling as I begged her to hold on.

I ran as fast as I could to the nearest corner store and bought some raspberries and cream. When I returned to her room, she watched me with a smile as I prepared two bowls of raspberries and cream. We enjoyed the treat together until there was nothing left. And then I kissed her hand and held it tightly. On her face was a glow that showed no pain or fear. It was a bittersweet moment, for she knew that this simple pleasure had been denied to her for so long.
Her children came the next day to discuss the final arrangements. As they sat by her bedside, tears streamed down their faces. I shared the story of the raspberries and cream, revealing how much their mother had longed for that little delight. They listened closely, their faces showing a mix of regret and gratitude. A few days later, she passed away peacefully in her sleep. Just as Mrs. Wiggins wished, I promised to enjoy “raspberries and cream” in my life, cherishing every moment and making the most of my time with loved ones
