On the first day of school this year, Joseph Riley, the principal (校长) of Pocahontas County High School in
West Virginia, dropped by the band classroom and told the 38 students that the school had been unable to find a
band teacher after the former teacher left over the summer to take a teaching position at a different school.
“I said that we'd have to get them into other classes,” Riley said. Then he gave the students a second option. If
the teens wanted to keep the Warriors band going and teach themselves, the school would support them. Most
students decided to take a different class, but ten students took him up on the offer. The guys didn't give up faced
with unpleasant situations and they found the courage to keep the band going.
The ten band members elected Hailey Fitzgerald, 17, as band director, and then invited two teachers from the
school to serve as advisors.Math teacher Jennifer Nail-Cook agreed to offer support.“They are an impressive bunch
of kids,” Nail-Cook said. “We are all very proud of them.” Band students practice the school song every day,and
they have learned to work together, Fitzgerald said. They also had to solve a problem when they realized they had
too many drummers(鼓手).
The band's latest performance was at their school's Homecoming Day. “When we do our school song, that's
probably everybody's favorite,” said Jadyn Lane,17. “To see so many people supporting and cheering us on, that's a
huge motivator.”
Several school alumni(校友) volunteered to join the students in the stands on Homecoming Day. “Our school
is the heart of the community,” Riley said. “Everyone is really appreciative of these kids working together to make
sure our school still has a band. It's unbelievable to witness the progress they' ve made on their own.”
Years from now, Fitzgerald said she imagines she’ ll look back on her junior year as band director with pride.“It
was never an option for us to quit — we all love it too much,” she said.
4. What happened to the Warriors band when school started this year

How do you put a value on culture Under bad economic conditions, a political, philosophical question is
too easily reduced to painful choices. Would you prefer a roof over your head, or a tune in your heart Trucks
to collect the rubbish from your streets, or a library with many books It's a decision nobody in a civilized
society should be forced to make, yet these very alternatives are posed in an ongoing public consultation by
Hampshire County Council(HCC).
A crisis of public services that has been going on for the past 14 years reached a boiling point this week
with the publication of a draft budget from the authority charged with running the UK's second city,Birmingham. It
proposes to completely stop funding a variety of cultural institutions starting next year. The only remotely
positive thing is that there's no room for arguing over minor resources, as so often happens. The pain is shared
equally, with no discrimination between different disciplines, or high and low culture.
In the centenary(一百周年) year of the Birmingham Rep— one of the 10 institutions on the city's red list—
—a group of household names, from Kenneth Branagh to Toyah Willcox, Ian McKellen to Timothy Dalton,
lined up to praise its role in helping to kickstart their careers. This is not just about the talented few who got
their break through the arts, but about the many to whom they have gone on to give pleasure, food for thought,
and an inspirational example, whether they are growing up in Wigan like McKellen, or Belfast like Branagh.
In 1911,a poem titled Bread and Roses was published in an American magazine.
It's not a well-structured poem, but it makes a crucial point. “Our lives shall not be sweated from birth
until life closes — Hearts starve as well as bodies: Give us Bread, but give us Roses”. We would do well to
remember that poem today.
8. What is the author's attitude towards the public consultation by HCC
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Critical. D. Tolerant.
9. Which of the following describes the draft budget in Birmingham
A. Distributing funding according to discipline.
B. Withdrawing funding for all cultural institutions.
C. Balancing funding between high and low culture.
D. Reducing funding for institutions of low culture.
10. What does the author imply about the role of cultural institutions like the Birmingham Rep
A. They are essential for the development of high culture.
B. They provide opportunities for both artists and the audience.
C. They are more important than basic public services.
D. They should be prioritized in budget allocations.
11. What is Bread and Roses quoted to show
A. Art's role in fighting daily struggles. B. Nature's connection to human well-being.
C. The importance of both basic needs and culture. D. The public's ever-increasing demand for fine art.

What's your opinion on spicy food Some people cannot handle even the smallest amount of chili peppers in their dinner while
others can't get enough of them.
Scientists have long been puzzled by why some people love the chili while others loath e it. Plenty of research has been done
on the subject, dating as far back as the 1970s. Previous results showed that a love of chilies is related to childhood experiences, and
that cultural influences affect our taste too. But the latest study has found that a person's love of spicy food may be linked to his or
her personality more than anything else, CBC News reported.
“We have always assumed that liking contributes to intake —— we eat what we are fond of and we like what we consume. But
no one has actually directly bothered to relate personality to intake of chili peppers,” said Professor John E. Hayes from
Pennsylvania State University, who led the study.
But before you look at the study, you should first know that“spicy” is not a taste, unlike sour, sweet, bitter and salty taste. It is,
in fact, a burning feeling that you feel on the surface of your tongue. This got scientists thinking that maybe a love of spicy food is
brought about by people's longing for thrill, something they usually get from watching action movies or riding a roller coaster.
In the study, 97 subjects, both male and female, were asked to fill out questionnaires about their personality, for example,
whether they are keen on new experiences or tend to avoid risks. They were then given a glass of water with capsaicin, the plant
chemical that makes a chili burn, mixed into it.
By comparing the answers to the questionnaire and what participants said they felt about the spicy water, researchers found that
those who tended to enjoy action movies or take risks were about six times more likely to enjoy the spicy water.
Interestingly, we used to believe that the reason why some people can stand spicy food is that their tongues.have become less
sensitive to it. However, this latest study has found otherwise. “It's not that it doesn't burn as badly, but that you actually learn to like
the burning feeling,” Hayes explained.
12. Which can take the place of the underlined word“loathe” in Paragraph 2
A. dislike. B. seek. C. accept. D. harvest.
13. What did Professor John E. Hayes and his team discover from their study
A. What we eat actually helps develop our personality. B. Males prefer spicy food than females.
C. Those avoiding risks tend to hate spicy food. D. It's wrong to treat“spicy” as a feeling.
14. Why do some people like spicy food according to the recent study
A. Because their tongues have become less sensitive. B. Because they are lacking in appetite.
C. Because they want to challenge themselves. D. Because they love the burning feeling.
15. What's the main idea of the passage
A. What to eat mainly depends on personality
B. Preference for spicy food relies largely on personality
C. Taste has nothing to with one's experiences
D. Different people have different taste.
