In the wild, wolves (狼) with broken legs often face an unlucky life, waiting for death. Yet, in the Hoh Xd National Nature Reserve (可可西里国家级自然保护区) in Qinghai, one such wolf had a different life. It grew from a poor, thin one to a fat, happy wolf because visitors in the area often fed it.
This “act of kindness” led people to ask: Should tourists feed the wolf Supporters (支持者) argue that without feeding, the wolf would die because it couldn’t get food by itself. But someone doesn’t agree with the idea. They believe that humans should not mess with (干扰) the natural order. Science, however, provides us with an answer.
Research in Scientific Reports in June 2019 studied how human feeding affected (影响) the lives of dolphins near Bunbury, Australia. Dolphins there can sometimes get food from the Dolphin Discovery Centre. After studying for more than 10 years, the scientists found that dolphins looking for food from boats had a higher risk of death than those who found food by themselves. This is because they may get hit by boats or caught by fishing nets.
Feeding wild animals may lead them to depend on humans for food, warned Dai Qiang, a scientist at the Chengdu Institute of Biology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (中国科学院成都生物研究所). What’s more, sick animals may bring illnesses to people who feed them.
So, if we face a wild animal that seems to need our help, what should we do Qi Xinzhang, a worker of Xining Wildlife Park, said that it’s best to report the animal to the authorities (相关部门) instead of just feeding it.

Pu Cuifen, a villager from Yunnan Province, experienced that an elephant visited his house two years ago. The elephants were harmful to no one, but had com and beans on the farm. The villagers lost nearly 50,000yuan. Earlier than that, villagers would drive away the elephants to protect their crops, which made the animals angry and led to human injuries or deaths.
Now the government has helped to pay the money for the crops damaged (损害) by elephants. Such things will help protect the interests of farmers and elephants. The government has also created “dining halls” for the wild elephants to grow their favorite food, such as elephant grass and bamboo. Villagers now simply leave the elephants alone.
Yunnan Province is not the only example of protecting wild animals. In Tibet, Migmar used to be a hunter, but now has become a rescuer at the wildlife rescue station of Qomolangma. He and his friends take turns to go around to check there’s no trouble or danger for wild animals every day. The wildlife rescue station was set up in 2019. From then on, they have saved 17 wild animals. During this period, they learned to tie up the animals and clean their wounds, and set them free into the wild when they got well again. “Animals don’t talk, but I can feel their trust. We should protect them,” said Migmar.
Examples of taking care of wild animals appear more around us. From damage to protection, people see more changing on human-wildlife relations. Even the simplest change and action can make a change to the world.

Students may want to feed street cats in school, but they may not know where the cats are. Now, at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU), students can use their phones to find school cats and get to know them.
To give school cats a better life, students of the university made a WeChat mini-program (小程序)—Beiwai Cats. On it, every cat in the university has an “ID card”. The cards show the cats’ photos and also have stories about them. Cat lovers can also adopt (收养) school cats on the mini-program.

After the 2022 Spring Festival Gala, an amazing show called The Journey of a Legendary Landscape Painting (《只此青绿》) became a hit (受欢迎的事物). The show is based on a classical Chinese painting—A Panorama of Rivers and Mountains (千里江山图) by Wang Ximeng, an artist who lived during the Song Dynasty (960-1279). Watching the show is like going on a journey back to the Song Dynasty. The painting is now kept in the Palace Museum in Beijing.
Netizens made a word for the challenging move —“ blue- green waist (青绿腰)”. In fact, the bend (弯曲) in the show is meant to sketch the shape of steep cliffs and winding mountains in the painting. A number of people take on the challenge by bending backward. Some dancers even bend backward at a 90-degree angle. The graceful but difficult backbend has become popular. However, without years of training or proper instructions (指导), people may hurt their bones (骨头).
The dancers in the show have trained for years before getting on stage. To show the beauty of the painting through traditional Chinese dance movements, the directors studied a lot of materials and read almost all the poems of the Song Dynasty. It took them almost 20 months to put the show on the stage.

Zibo city in Shandong province has stormed the Internet since late February for its local barbecue (烧烤). In March, the small city received about 4. 8 million tourists. It is certainly not the only city that offers barbecue, or even the most famous one, but its seemingly sudden fame was steps in the making.
Zhou Maosong, president of Zibo Tourism Promotion Association said the popularity (流行,受欢迎) started from the crowd-gathering effect of cultural and tourism activities including a music festival. Then famous people tasted the barbecue and put their experiences online attracting young people, which led to a wave of students from neighbouring cities visiting Zibo. What better way to attract adventurous (爱冒险的) and hungry college students other than “tasty barbecue that makes you full within only 50 yuan!”
However, Zibo did not fall into the trap (陷阱) of easy fame that dies fast where sellers cheat buyers on price and quality for the most profit (盈利) in the shortest time. A blogger on Douyin took an electronic scale (电子秤) to ten barbecue stands in Ziboto test if he would be offered less food. It turned out that not a single one was caught short of weight and some owners even offered him local snacks for free. Local people’s honest and friendly behaviour touched even more people online and again lifted the city’s popularity.

A new collection has put the spotlight (聚焦) on qipao. Hu Sheguang, known for his creative designs and amazing shows, presented 100 fancy qipao dresses at the CP Center in Beijing during the 2024 AW Beijing Fashion Week.
Lots of models, all in high heels (高跟鞋), walked down the runway to show Hu’s qipao designs. There are four different styles: Flowery Woman, French-style Elegance, Rock ‘n’ Roll and Neo-Chinese Style. These new designs changed how people viewed the traditional Chinese dress that had been around for a century and gave a new look to the old-fashioned Chinese dress.
Qipao first appeared in the 1920s as a loose (宽松的) dress like the one-piece gowns that men wore and then became popular among young women. About ten years later, the dress was changed to fit women’s bodies better, making it necessary among fashionable women, especially in Shanghai, which was considered the fashion capital of China. In the 1940s, qipao became more form-fitting with a high collar (衣领) and tight sleeves (衣袖). By the 1950s, it had become a symbol of elegance (优雅). Today, many women in China still wear qipao for formal occasions.
Traditional qipao dresses are usually made of silk, which can be expensive. However, Hu’s designs used different materials, including cotton, linen and leather, to make sure that more women could buy qipao. Hu also made a change to the dress’s buttons (纽扣). To make qipao convenient (方便的) to wear, he used zippers (拉链) in his designs.
“Chinese qipao is usually custom-made to show the wearer’s individuality (个性). Qipao is also so inclusive (包容开放的) that it can be worn for various events, allowing every woman to be fashionable,” Hu said.
