It all started when a foreign girl named Kris posted a sad photo online. It looked like her boyfriend made her cry. Some nice Chinese people tried to cheer her up. They asked her to find someone better. Some made finny Chinglish to make her feel happy, such as “You swan, he frog”.
This became a hit with foreigners. Many found it cool. They shared it a lot online and made funny pictures with it.
“I need Chinese netizens (网友) in my life who call the people that have hurt me fogs,” said a foreign Internet user, showing her love for the expression. Some of them wanted to know why Chinese people use “‘swan” and “frog” to describe this couple. After looking into it, they learned that it came from the famous old Chinese story of the beautiful swan and the ugly toad (癞蛤蟆), and got interested in the Chinese stories behind Chinglish.

What gives robots their power Maybe most people will give their answer: batteries. Well, what about a kind oyster mushroom (杏鲍菇) Recently, a team of scientists from the US and Italy have made this happen.
The scientists chose this type of mushroom because it grows easily and quickly. The team began by growing its mycelium (菌丝) —the “root” of the mushroom. This “root” is made of tiny thin threads. They help the mushroom “feel” the environment and find “food”.
As the mycelium grew larger, the team used electrodes (电极) to connect it with the robot. When they shone light on the mycelium, it sent out electrical signals. The scientists then recorded the signals and turned them into “orders” that the robot could understand. The robot moved forward using its five legs.
The scientists do not know how the mushroom produced the signals in response to the light. However, they believe it may do this when it meets changes in the environment. If so, robots powered by this type of mushroom can play an important role in agriculture. For example, the mushroom may be able to sense changes in the soil, and “tell” the robot when to add more fertilizer (肥料) for crops, reported New Atlas, a science website.

In Petaluma, California, US, to-go drinks are now served in a type of purple cup. Each cup has a QR code. More than 60 special bins have been set up around the city to collect these cups. Workers will come later to clean them and send them back to shops for reuse.
The city-wide project is the first of its kind in the US. It aims to stop the use of disposable cups, which have been around since the early 1900s. Before the invention of disposable cups people shared wooden or metal cups for drinking. Lawrence Luellen, a lawyer in Boston, US, was worried about the spread of germs. So he invented a disposable “Health Cup” made of paper in 1907. It quickly caught on, especially after the serious Spanish flu in 1918.
Disposable cups are common. Today’s disposable cups also have polystyrene (聚苯乙烯) in them. This type of plastic helps keep the drinks warm. However, it takes about 500 years to completely break up. This is bad for our planet. For example, polystyrene turns into small pieces with time. Animals may eat them and get hurt.
Since its start on Aug 1st, the purple cup project in Petaluma has received wide attention. More than 30 businesses have joined in, including Starbucks and Coca-Cola. They are tracing the QR codes on the cups to see how many of them are being reused. The project will end in November.

第二节 阅读表达(共5题;每题2分, 满分10分)
阅读下面短文,简略回答问题。
Do schools need libraries and librarians In the U.S., libraries are not required in public schools. Over 8,000 schools have no libraries. For those with libraries, about 17,000 have no librarians. Since 2000, nearly 20% of librarians have been removed from public schools.
Libraries cost lots of money to set up and keep up-to-date (更新). Public schools depend on taxpayers’ (纳税人的) money to pay for books, computers, salaries, and more. When there is not enough money, schools often remove librarians’ jobs and buy fewer books. Books can become out-of-date, and many schools even have replaced libraries with media centers that have computers so that students can find new information online. These changes save money, and students can still get their work done. It seems like a win-win game.
However, national and state research comparing students’ test scores found big differences among U.S. schools. The research found that students who had school libraries and librarians did better in school. Students learn more when schools have up-to-date libraries. Librarians are experts in library science and have many important skills. They can show students how to do good research. Librarians can teach students how to tell the difference between good and bad information. Many librarians also work with teachers and their classes.
Cutting spending is necessary when there isn’t enough money. Schools have to find ways to help their students succeed while keeping spending down. Libraries and librarians help students learn and succeed, so they are very important. Next, schools may need to look for other ways to cut spending.
