In Hindman, Kentucky, a group of women, known as the “book women”, usually
set off on horseback at dawn, to pick their way along snowy hillsides and through
muddy streams with a simple goal: to deliver reading materials to remote mountain
communities.
英语试题 第 4 页(共 1 2 页)
The Pack Horse Library initiative was part of President Franklin Roosevelt’s
Works Progress Administration (WPA), created to help lift America out of the Great
Depression, during which,by 1933, unemployment had risen to 40 percent in
Appalachia. This initiative was an opportunity to boost both employment and literacy
at the same time.
The WPA paid the book carriers salaries. Counties had to have their own base
libraries from which the horse-riding librarians would travel. Local schools helped
cover those costs, and the reading materials—books, magazines, and newspapers—
were all donated.
The book women rode 100 to 120 miles a week, on their own horses or mules,
along planned routes, regardless of the weather. If the destination was too remote even
for horses, they dismounted and went on foot.
In most cases, the book women were hired locally— according to historian
Donald C. Boyd, “a familiar face to otherwise distrustful mountain folk.” By the end
of 1938, there were 274 librarians riding out across 29 counties. In total, the program
employed nearly 1,000 riding librarians.
In addition to providing reading materials, the book women served as
touchstones for these communities. They tried to fill book requests, sometimes
stopped to read to those who couldn’t, and helped develop local pride. As one
recipient said, “The books you brought us have saved our lives. It’s our duty to visit
the library and to help in every way that we can, so that we may keep it as an active
actor in our community.”
24. What did the Pack Horse Library initiative aim to do
A. Link remote communities. B. Enrich life in the country.
C. Support the local schools. D. Provide job opportunities.
25. Which aspect of the initiative is presented in paragraph 3
A. The operation mode. B. The librarian selection.
C The historical background. D. The community engagement.
26. What was the main reason for most of the book women being hired locally
A. They were excellent horse riders. B. They were familiar with the routes.
C. They could be trusted more easily. D. They could be hired at a low cost.
27.What can the book women be regarded as according to the last paragraph
A. Social activists. B. Community facilitators.
C. Information providers. D. Book reviewers.

On the green island of Yakushima, Japan, two species, the Japanese macaque
monkeys and sika deer, have formed an amazing and unusual inter-species
relationship. The macaques ride on the backs of the deer, cleaning their fur as they
travel around the island. In turn, the deer feed on fruit thrown by the macaques and
even consume their droppings at night, effectively cleaning their sleeping grounds.
This behaviour is far from accidental; the two species actively communicate and
signal to one another to start these actions.
Prof. Cédric Sueur, an expert in animal behaviour at the University of
Strasbourg, suggests that the macaques and deer exhibit a level of deep understanding
of each other. This phenomenon highlights a concept known as “co-culture”, which
refers to social learning across species, not just within them. Typically, animals learn
behaviours from members of their own species, like bumblebees unlocking puzzle
boxes. However, Sueur’s research indicates that some species, like the macaques and
deer, can learn from and influence each other’s actions.
This type of social learning has significant implications for animal behaviour, as
it allows for the faster development of behaviours. Prof. Sueur’s theory of co-culture
is supported by other examples, such as ravens(渡鸦)following wolves in Yellowstone
to find their leftover as food and bats in Costa Rica sharing their habitats with birds
and hunting together. Prof. Jean-Baptiste Leca, a biological expert, points out that
while the concept of non-human animal culture was once not accepted, it is now
gaining recognition.
In spite of the growing evidence, researchers like Prof. Dorothy Fragaszy
acknowledge that proving co-culture remains a challenge. Dr. Michael Huffman, an
animal expert, emphasises that this idea requires further study to fully understand how
inter-species behaviours develop. This concept not only reshapes our understanding of
animal behaviour but also challenges our opinions of human uniqueness in social
learning.
28. What role do the deer play in the cooperation with the macaques
A. Food provider. B. Means of transport.
C. Safeguard. D. Caregiver.
29. Why are bumblebees mentioned in paragraph 2
A. To offer a similar example. B. To help understand co-culture.
C. To highlight animals’ intelligence. D. To imply that insects are different.
英语试题 第 6 页(共 1 2 页)
30. What is the significance of proving co-culture
A. It shows the study of animals never ends.
B. It proves animals are superior to humans.
C. It confirms human uniqueness in social learning.
D. It provides new perspectives on animal behaviour.
31. What is the main idea of the text
A. Animal behaviours are inborn.
B. Animals can be trained by humans.
C. Different species can learn from each other.
D. Animals socialise within their species.
D
It seems we've officially reached peak smartphone, with a growing number of
Americans lining up for their very own “dumbphon(e 傻瓜机)”. Whether it's nostalgia
or an attempt to save our mental health, there's an obvious return in the longing to own
a Nokia.
And it's not just parents forcing dumbphones on their children, either. According
to Fast Company, dumbphone brands' increase in demand is mostly driven by young
users. With Gen Z's love of the culture of the first decade of tie 20th century, part of
the dumbphone appeal depends on the throwback novelty of the flip phone. But
despite this fashionable feature, dumbphone users have one main goal: to reduce
screen time, and ultimately rescue their health. Many will know it as a “digital detox”.
For younger generations, phone use has essentially become a part-time job in
regard to time and labor. According to a 2023 report by the nonprofit organization
Common Sense, an average teen receives 237 notifications on their phone each day,
spending around 4. 5 hours on the screen.
It's no secret that scrolling on our phones is not a healthy pastime. A study found
a direct correlation between “doomscrolling” and mental and physical ill health.
Doomscrolling is the continuous consumption of sad, scary or negative news online.
Meanwhile, a 2020 study revealed smartphone and social media use in increased
mental issues in young people.
“Smartphones compete for your attention and are designed to be addictive, so it's
not surprising that people are looking for ways they can prevent or limit their
smartphone use. ” the President of the Australian Psychological Society, Dr Catriona
Davis-McCabe, says.
Even the industry is meeting the demand. Nokia parent company HMD has seen

sales for dumbphones double in the US from 2022 to 2023, with the phone brand
reportedly giving up its smartphone market in favor of dumbphones. Meanwhile, other
dedicated brands like Light Phone and Punkt have also entered the mobile market,
purely selling dumbphones.

A. Their parents' force. B. Their love for noughties culture.
C. The fashion of flip phones. D. Their desire to reduce screen time.
33. What does “doomscrolling” in paragraph4 refer to
A. Constantly scrolling through social media posts.
B. Constantly using the phone to search for health-related information.
C. Continuously consuming negative news online.

Productivity seems to be the holy grail(圣杯)of the working world. Imagine the
perfect day—working from dusk to dawn, a productivity machine.Thankfully, a
productive lifestyle isn’t all that difficult to achieve. 36 In line with that, here are
some steps highly productive people do that you can carry out in your own life.
There’s one thing everyone must have in common—listening to our bodies. If we
don’t listen to our bodies, productivity isn’t sustainable. 37 They notice signs such
as lack of sleep and constantly feeling tired. But, most importantly, they act. During
the working day, highly productive people know how their bodies work and adapt
their schedules. For example, by doing small tasks first, productive people set
themselves up for a successful afternoon.
38 Every minute is maximized to its full potential, whether it’s relaxing after
英语试题 第 8 页(共 1 2 页)
work or a period of deep work. For starters, organizational tools such as Trello are
popular, and with good reason. 39 Email marketers have more attractive tools such
as Convert-Kit that automate the email sequence. Automating may sometimes be
annoying to set up, but it saves so much time which better used elsewhere. When you
learn to maximize your time as highly productive people do, maintaining longer
periods of efficient work becomes easier.
The benefits of prioritizing downtime can not be understated. Sleep, the ultimate
rest, is vital to a productive person’s weapon. For example, a study found that when
you sleep for four hours or less consistently, your thinking ability declines to the
equivalent of adding about eight years in age. Besides, as we know, your body needs
time off from work. Think of the famous metaphor: you can’t shoot an arrow without
first pulling it back. 40 .
A. You must rest before you go again.
B. You don’t need to get anything done.
C. The tools keep your mind in check and focus high.
D. Highly productive people know when they’re burning out.
E. All highly productive people manage their time effectively.
F. However, useful tools like Convert-Kit extend beyond Trello.
G. To be a productive person, you need simple and practical steps.

anxious that the other pupils might make fun of his teeth as he had two extra teeth in
his upper jaw. Would anybody want to be his friend
Faris didn't realize that many of the other boys felt just as lonely as he did. He
eventually gathered the courage to start chatting with the other pupils, covering his
teeth with his hand. He soon made some new friends.
His teachers believed that the best way to help students who were homesick was
to cheer them up with sports and activities. Then there was music! The students had to

an extraordinary voice. He hit every note perfectly!

Britain and America.
"It's called rock'n'roll!" whispered David." The headmaster says it's a bad
influence and we shouldn't listen to it." Bruce showed Faris a black-and-white picture
cut out of a magazine. It was of a handsome man with an impossibly cool haircut
standing on his toes as he sang with his eyes closed. "That guy's called Elvis! The
government wants to ban him because he makes his fans go crazy. He's the greatest
music star in the world!"
This sounded exciting to Faris. The shy boy liked the idea of people going crazy
for him, too.
He and four of his friends slipped into the teachers' office one night. They
gathered around the radio and switched it on. There was a rolling beat, a loud
guitar, and a bouncing piano rhythm that made Faris want to get up and dance. It was
the most exciting thing in the world!
He and his friends listened to several rock'n'roll songs before slipping back to the
dormitory. They were too excited to sleep.

Bridging the Digital Divide for the Elderly
Last weekend witnessed a meaningful volunteer activity to help the elderly bridge the
digital divide. As a participant of this activity, I felt greatly inspired and enlightened.
This activity kicked off with a lecture where volunteers imparted practical knowledge
of essential digital skills to the elderly, after which volunteers were paired with senior
citizens for hands-on learning experiences. During this session, volunteers patiently
instructed how to apply basic mobile phone apps for daily usage, such as online
communication, hospital appointment and cashless payments. What impressed us most was
that some volunteers prepared user-friendly manuals with visual aid to foster
comprehension. When Granny Li broke into a radiant smile after knowing how to chat
with families online, I was overwhelmed with a deep sense of satisfaction.
This activity endows me with a new perspective of the essence of technology. Digital
technology not only renders us convenience but also boosts inter-generational
communication, thus helping create a harmonious and inclusive society.

"We should form a band,"Bruce whispered. Hardly had Bruce whispered these words when everyone's eyes lit up, sparkling with excitement and anticipation. They agreed it was a great idea and quickly assigned tasks:Bruce borrowing a guitar, David sneaking out a keyboard, and Faris being lead singer. Over the following weeks, the dusty storage room witnessed their secret yet passionate practice after dark, where they sharpened their skills, perfected their songs, practiced for hours until their fingers ached/burned with blisters and their voices grew(too)hoarse(to continue). When the news of the annual talent show came, the band was thrilled, eager to shock everyone with their trendy music. Then came the big day.
Stepping onto the stage, Faris took the microphone and began to sing. The moment the first note spread out, all his nervousness vanished.Faris and his friends immersed themselves in the energetic melody, eager to ignite the stage. With their music going, the initially quiet crowd erupted into cheers, even the headmaster couldn't help tapping feet to the rhythm. Had it not been for the pursue of his music dream, Faris might never have known what he was capable of. Many years later, whenever Faris recalled his first live performance, he would always be inspired by their own devotion and courage. The once shy boy with extra teeth has now been transformed into a confident superstar, his unique features becoming a symbol of courage and energy, inspiring countless young people continuously.
