People in Western countries are eating less meat these days, whether for their health or because they want to protect animals. But now they have another reason. Eating less meat can help to prevent climate change, according to a recent study published in Nature.
Raising livestock (家畜) is bad for the environment. When animals like cows digest (消化) food, their stomachs make greenhouse gases, which are a major cause of global warming. About 17percent of greenhouse gas emissions (排放) come from livestock farming, The New York Times reported. In addition, to raise these livestock, people have to cut down forests and turn them into farms. Forests play a key role in fighting global warming because they absorb greenhouse gases.
Eating less meat according to certain guidelines could cut global food-related emissions by nearly a third by 2050, the study found. Keeping a vegetarian (素食的) diet in the long term could bring down emissions by 63 percent.
But eating less meat won’t be easy. According to the study, people in western countries will need to eat 90 percent less meat than they do now in order to have an effect on our climate. Scientists are now trying to find new foods to replace meat.
Some say that insects could help. A 2013 UN report said that eating insects is healthier and better for the environment. They produce 75 percent less greenhouse gases than livestock. Lab-grown meat might be another solution.

Nov 9 is National Fire Safety Day. Here are some tips for you in case a fire breaks out.
When you smell smoke or see fire, shout “Fire!” as loudly as you can. Get help from your parents or call 119. Give them your location, and follow their instructions. Do not try to put out the fire yourself.
Get out of the room as soon as possible. Don’t try to take anything with you. A fire can become fierce (凶猛的) in a few seconds. If there is a lot of smoke in your room, keep your head and body close to the floor. There is less smoke lower down, so it’s easier to breathe and see where you are going. If the door handle (把手) is really hot, do not open the door. Try to find a different way out.
Never use the lift during a fire. Always use the stairs. The lift may stop working, and you could get trapped (被困) inside it.
If you can’t get out of your room, close the door and put a blanket at the foot of the door to stop smoke from coming in. Open the window and shout or wave something like a flashlight or item of clothing from the window. Close the window if smoke enters. Don’t hide under the bed or anywhere else. Stay by the window, close to the floor.
If your clothes catch fire, don’t run, because moving around will make the fire even bigger. Drop to the ground, and then roll from side to side to put out the fire.
Finally, remember to stay calm no matter what happens. This will help you to make smart decisions in an emergency.
9. What should you first do if you smell smoke or see fire in your building
A. Call your friends. B. Cry out for help loudly.
C Use the lift to leave the building. D. Try to put out the fire yourself.
10. Which is the right action if there is a lot of smoke in your room
A. B. C. D.
11. What must you do whatever happens in a big fire according to the text
A. Stop walking and hide under the bed.
B. Drop to the ground and then roll.
C. Keep calm and make clever decisions.
D. Open the window and get out of the room first.
12. What is the main purpose of writing the text
A. To tell us the dangers of home fires. B. To teach kids how to put out a fire.
C. To share information about fire safety. D. To ask the public to protect kids better.
D

It’s common to care about what other people think. However, we shouldn’t spend so much time on it. Indeed, if we spent all day worrying about how our actions make us appear, we’d never get anything done. So, how do we learn to ignore others’ opinions Well, the answer is about learning to value who we are. It means that we should live our lives for ourselves, not for other people. There are a couple of ways to go about doing this.
First, we should remember that our biggest judges (裁判) are ourselves. If we have a low opinion of ourselves, then we think that others feel the same way about us. To get over this, British therapist (心理治疗师) Chloe Brotheridge wrote in Psychology Today that we should “learn to love ourselves”. For example, you can make a list of the things you’ re good at and practice them every day. You can also spend more time with people who love you instead of with those who don’t. These things can help you feel better about yourself.
Second, as Brotheridge wrote, “We can’t control the way other people react to us, no matter how hard we try.” By realizing this, you can learn to focus more on things that make you unique (与众不同的).
In addition, we shouldn’t completely forget about how we act around other people. After all, nobody likes to have someone jump ahead of them in a queue (长队), for example. So, the best thing to remember is to always be nice to others.
41. How many suggestions does the writer give us about living our lives for ourselves

Dear schoolmates,
Just as the saying goes, “The fragrance always stays in the hand that gives the rose.” To carry forward Lei Feng’s spirit, let’s join hands to help others and warm our hearts.
Last month, I noticed an elderly neighbor struggling to carry heavy groceries. I helped her carry them upstairs. She thanked me with a warm smile, which made me realize even small acts can bring big happiness.
Here’s my appeal: First, show kindness in daily life—help classmates with studies or assist the elderly. Second, join volunteer activities like community service or charity drives. Third, spread love by sharing positive energy with others.
Let’s start small and make the world a warmer place together!
Sincerely,
Li Hui
