Some books chosen by Maggie Shipstead
In her novel Great Circle—a best-seller now among readers—Maggie Shipstead wrote the adventure of a missing 1950s female pilot and a film actress hired to play her.
Below, Shipstead recommends three other books about the sea or sky.
A Voyage for Madmen (2001)
This is an exciting account of a 1968–69 round-the-world sailing adventure, in which nine men set out together but only one succeeded in finishing the task at last. The writer skillfully tells how the others were taken away by storms, illness, loneliness, tiredness and in one case, the unbelievable madness-causing cheat.
Spreading My Wings (1994)
A fast-living English society girl and pilot, Walker spent World War II ferrying warplanes around the U.K. and to Europe. She records those years in this chatty book full of fun and adventure. Reading it feels like spending a rainy afternoon at the feet of your favorite great-aunt, amused by exciting stories from an extremely well-lived life.
Maiden Voyage (1989)
In 1985, Aebi’s father gave her two choices: go to college or sail solo around the world. She made up her mind to sail alone. I read this account of her journey when I was a teenager and was attracted by the ups and downs of her adventure. She also talked about her struggle, disappointment and doubts.

Rollins College’s graduate, Elizabeth Bonker gave a powerful speech at the school’s graduation ceremony using text-to-speech technology. “You have a voice. Use it,” she advised graduates. It seems funny that a non-speaking autistic (孤独症患者) encourages you to use your voice. However, her moving speech touched not only her fellow classmates but also the worldwide audience with a powerful message of hope.
Throughout her academic career, Elizabeth has studied hard to reach her goals at school and in life. She wrote a book, I Am in Here, which highlights the abilities of people like her with non-speaking autism. She also founded a non-profit organization called Communication 4 All.
Elizabeth has a form of autism that resulted in her losing the ability to speak when she was 15 months old. After she lost her speech, her family helped her learn to communicate by typing. She has become a supporter of assistive communication and typing instruction for those with non-speaking autism.
“I have typed this speech with one finger with a communication partner holding a keyboard,” shared Elizabeth. She gave her persuasive speech through text-to-speech technology.
Elizabeth majored in social service with the purpose of helping the 31 million people in the world who have non-speaking autism. She strongly believes that service to others gives meaning to each individual and to those they serve.
Throughout her life, Elizabeth has sought a platform where others would hear and accept her. She ignored negative comments and the low expectations others had for her life. Instead, she walked down her own path and set out to realize her dreams using intellect, talent and determination. She encouraged her fellow classmates to use their education and the power of their own minds to help make their dream a reality.
24. What effect does Elizabeth’s speech have on the audience
A. It brings them hope.
B. It inspires them to use technology.
C. It informs them of more about autism.
D. It encourages them to make speeches.
25. What did Elizabeth’s family do after she was unable to speak
A. They created the text-to-speech technology to help her.
B. They helped her find another way of communication.
C. They tried their best to teach her how to speak.
D. They started a non-profit organization for her.
26. Why did Elizabeth choose social service as her major
A. To help more people like her in the world.
B. To make her childhood dream come true.
C. To get better employment opportunities.
D. To develop her potential and strengths.
27. Which words can be used to describe Elizabeth
A. Positive and negative.
B. Energetic and humorous.
C. Strong-minded and helpful.
D. Kind-hearted and imaginative.

Chewing uses a surprising amount of energy. An experiment that looked at the energy use associated with chewing gum (口香糖) found that it can increase bodily energy use by up to 15 per cent.
Adam van Casteren at the University of Manchester in the UK and his colleagues measured energy use in 21 people between 18 and 45 years old as they chewed gum for 15 minutes.
The gum was tasteless and calorie-free. “This way it doesn’t activate the digestive (消化的) system to the same extent as it otherwise would,” says van Casteren. “We wanted to measure just chewing or as close to chewing as we could get.
Each participant (参与者) was asked to chew two types of gum- one soft and the other tough-so they could compare the effects of the gum’s properties (性能) on the participants’ energy uses.
Energy use was measured using a plastic dome (半球形物) covering the participants’ heads. A monitor inside the dome measured oxygen intake and the amount of carbon dioxide released. “You can use this information to figure out how much energy is being used,” says van Casteren.
Before the experiment, the participants had all worn the plastic dome while they sat watching a film in order for the researchers to acquire their base level energy uses. The researchers found that chewing the soft gum raised energy use by about 10 per cent, while chewing the tougher gum increased this use by around 15 per cent. Van Casteren says it’s interesting that a small change in the properties of the gum had such a notable effect on energy use.
He says he expects the energy used to chew real food will be even larger as many foods such as steak and nuts require a lot of effort to break down. “I want to look at how much energy chewing nuts and seeds uses next,” he says.
28. Which aspect of chewing gum does Adam van Casteren study
A. The taste and calorie of gum.
B. The energy use involved in chewing gum.
C. The softness and hardness of gum.
D. The participants of chewing gum.
29. Why is the tasteless and calorie-free gum used
A. To make chewing healthy.
B. To save energy in chewing it.
C. To make the study objective.
D. To protect the digestive system.
30. What is the function of the monitor in a plastic dome
A. Researchers can use it to collect information.
B. Researchers use it to fix the participants’ head.
C. To work out the energy used during the research.
D. To measure oxygen and carbon dioxide in the gum.
31. How does the author support his view in Paragraph 6
A. By doing a survey. B. By giving examples.
C. By citing references. D. By making a comparison.
D
Some students get so nervous before a test. They do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock, a professor at the University of Chicago in Illinois, has studied these highly anxious test-takers. The students start worrying about the results. And when they worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources .
Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short maths tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of 12% worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of 5%. Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test. Professor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B- for those who did not.
“What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, who’d done our writing intervention (干预), all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. They were performing just as well as their classmates who don’t normally get nervous in these tests.”
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.
What may the students start worrying about before an exam
What kind of problems they will meet on the test paper.
B. Whether they have remembered the materials.
C. What other students do during the test.
D. Whether they can pass the exams.
What is the solution developed by researchers
Asking the students to ignore the test.
B. Asking the students to focus on the test.
C. Asking the students to sit quietly before the test.
D. Asking the students to write about their worries before the test.
According to Professor Beilock, those who thought about things unrelated to the test _____________.
did worse than those who wrote about their feelings
B. did better than those who wrote about their feelings
C. became less nervous before the test
D. were better at controlling their feelings
What can be learned from the last paragraph
It doesn’t matter where we write about our worries before an exam.
B. The best place to write about our worries is in the test room.
C. We can only write about our worries right before an exam.
D. Writing about our worries before an exam can work a bit
第二节: (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Travelling with friends can be an amazing experience where you could make lifelong memories or it could ruin your friendship. 36 Here are some rules you should follow to make sure your next trip with friends goes as smoothly as possible.
37 Sure, you and your friends probably have some similar interests, but that’s not always the case. In an effort to keep everyone happy, go over travel plans and expectations ahead of time. Have each person categorize activities or sights into “must-see”, “want to see” and “would go if we have time”. Plan accordingly and make sure everyone can see some of their top attractions.
Communicate and respect each other. Everyone has personal preferences when travelling— from getting the bed closest to the bathroom or sitting in the airplane’s window seat. But sometimes things don’t go as you like. In this case, share your requirements directly with your travel companions. 38 At the same time, listen to their concerns and be respectful of them.
Don’t disappear. When travelling with a group — or even just one other person — you may want some alone time. 39 It’s especially true of travelling in foreign countries or unfamiliar places.
Get off your phone. Of course, your friends will understand if you need to take a call from a family member, or in the event of a work emergency. 40 Don’t respond to less important work contact or send messages frequently. After all, the appeal of this type of trip is to spend time with friends. Just enjoy it!
A. Give each other some space.
B. Include at least one activity for everyone.
C. But other than that, try to stay off your phone.
D. And remember that consideration and respect go a long way.
E. That’s completely fine, but make sure your friends know where you are.
F. Have a conversation when problems arise, for communication is the key.
G. So it’s important to make sure you and your friend(s) are on the same page.

Lin Wei, a quiet and reserved high school student from a small town in Hunan province, China. Her secret passion was traditional Chinese dance. But she lacked confidence, always feeling awkward and out of place. The only person who truly understood her was Mei, her classmate and friend. Mei, with her outgoing personality, had a deep appreciation of different arts and cultures, and often spoke of how art could connect people across boundaries.
One day, Mei excitedly told Lin Wei about an opportunity: a cultural exchange program in Brazil during the Carnival season. The program was looking for students to showcase their talents and share their cultural heritage. Mei, a talented singer of traditional Chinese folk songs, was already planning to try out. “Lin Wei, you should come too!” she urged. “Your Chinese dance is beautiful! It would be a perfect way to share our culture.”
Lin Wei hesitated. The thought of performing in front of a large audience, especially in a foreign country, terrified her. She imagined herself stumbling, forgetting the steps, and being laughed at. What if they don’t understand my dance What if it’s too different These thoughts went around in her mind. But Mei didn’t give up. She helped Lin Wei choose a beautiful piece of traditional Chinese music, helped her find a flowing silk costume with wide sleeves, and even practiced with her, offering encouragement and support, focusing on expressing the emotions behind the movements. She reminded Lin Wei of how art, even without words, could tell stories and touch hearts. Slowly, Lin Wei’s worry began to give way to a flicker of excitement.
Arriving in Rio, Lin Wei was overwhelmed by Carnival’s explosion of color and energy. She felt a wave of panic. The confidence she’d built with Mei began to fall apart. The dazzling Samba dancers, their movements so fluid and powerful, made her doubt herself even more. Could my quiet, subtle movements ever find a place here She held Mei’s hand tightly, feeling small and insignificant.
Their first performance was scheduled for the next day. Lin Wei spent the evening in her hotel room, practicing her dance routine, but her heart wasn’t in it. The fear was back, stronger than ever. She looked at her reflection, seeing a scared girl, not a confident performer.

【Sample】The next morning, Lin Wei was shaking backstage as she prepared for her performance. Her fingers nervously adjusted the silk costume while doubts clouded her mind. How could her subtle Chinese dance impress an audience captivated by Brazil’s vibrant rhythms Noticing her anxiety, Mei approached. “Remember who you are,” Mei whispered encouragingly. As Lin Wei stepped onto the brightly lit stage, her heart pounding against her chest, she recalled the peaceful mountains of Hunan and her grandmother’s gentle guidance. Taking a deep breath, she began her dance, her movements initially hesitant but gradually flowing like water as the ancient melody filled the air.
Then something unexpected happened. The restless audience, which had been chatting moments before, fell completely silent. Their eyes followed her graceful gestures with growing fascination, captivated by the quiet power of her traditional art form. When she finished, thunderous applause erupted, surprising Lin Wei completely. A Brazilian dancer later approached her, admiration in her eyes. “Your performance taught me that true cultural expression doesn’t need to shout to be heard,” she said warmly. That evening, surrounded by new friends from across the globe, Lin Wei finally understood that her heritage wasn’t something to hide but her greatest strength — a unique voice in the world’s beautiful chorus of diverse traditions.

W: Somehow I doubt it. Your holiday is going to consist of texting your friends and playing computer games.

【原文】M: You have been working from home for quite a while. Is it difficult to get organized After all, you can’t just go to the office and ask something or check some files at any time.
W: The Internet makes it relatively easy. And, if need be, you can sometimes make a call to the office.
M: Doesn’t your employer mind when you mention working from home
W: Not really, as long as I get my work done.
M: Do you work on a regular schedule
W: With home working that’s necessary. My working day starts at 9. From 12 to 1 I have my lunch break and after that I work again until 5.

【原文】W: Hello. What can I do for you
M: Hello. My wife and I will be moving here soon, so I need to find us somewhere to live.
W: Well, there are some lovely flats in Toowong. I’ve got two really good ones at the moment. The first one is on the ground floor. It’s got two bedrooms. The main bedroom is nice and large. The second bedroom is small, but it would make a nice study. That flat is $250 per week.
M: Sounds great. Though I don’t like the idea of being on the street level.
W: Well, I’ve got another one on the seventh floor, where you can see the river from the window. It’s the same size as the other one, with two bedrooms and a fairly typical living area.
M: Hmm. It sounds nice. Is the price the same
W: No, it’s $75 dearer a week. Is that a problem
M: No, actually, it’s OK for me as long as it is no more than $350.
W: Good. When would you like to see the flat
M: As soon as possible really.

【原文】W: Hi everyone and welcome to the Bryce College. Today, we’ll be taking a tour of the campus. We’ll begin the campus tour in a minute, but first I’d like to remind you about your student ID. Right now, you all have short-term ID. Those will only last until the end of the week, when classes start. After that, you’ll need your long-term Bryce College ID—to get onto campus, to use the library, and a lot of other things. And to get your long-term ID, you’ll need to go to the student administration office, which is on the ground floor of the main building—don’t worry, I’ll show you where that is. Now, you have short-term ID until the end of the week, but I wouldn’t wait until then if I were you. To get your long-term ID, you need to show your acceptance letter from the college plus one other form of ID documents, like a driver’s license, or a passport. You just fill out a form; they’ll take your picture and make your card while you wait. It takes only a few minutes. Um, okay, so, are there any questions before we start the tour
