8.1 million people are waiting for calls from strangers worldwide. Some of them consider themselves introverts (内向的人), but as volunteers for Be My Eyes, they all have a kind heart.
Be My Eyes was created in 2015 by Wiberg from Denmark. Blind people can use this free app to video call sighted (有视力的) volunteers when they need daily help. Today volunteers outnumber (数量超过) blind users by ten to one.
It’s not easy for volunteers to get a call. Zhang Yanfei joined Be My Eyes in 2019 but didn’t receive her first call until four years later. Calls go out to many volunteers at the same time. If one doesn’t answer immediately, another volunteer will take the call.
He Yanyan, a stage actress, once received her first call. A young man nervously asked, “Can this app really help ” Feeling nervous herself, she realized the man was also new to the platform. She pictured and explained the objects around him. The caller relaxed and asked if he looked tidy. After she told him that his clothes were clean, the conversation (谈话) continued for a few more rounds until the call was suddenly cut off. The volunteer wondered if she had sounded unfriendly.
Cao Zhenxiang was also nervous during his first call. After he helped an elderly man check the expiration date (有效期) on his bread, the two thanked each other repeatedly. “I was so nervous that I didn’t even know why I was thanking him,” he said.
Now, Cao feels much more confident. He recently helped a blind person cross the street while working on his computer. “It just felt like chatting with a friend.” he said.

West Town Bike is a group that organizes local bike clubs for teenagers. It is based in Chicago. Teens at West Town Bike say that they enjoy biking, but biking in this city sometimes seems dangerous. Recently, these students have suggested a lot of solutions in order to make roads safer for bikers.
David Harb, a senior at Lane Tech High School, has learned hand signals from his father since he was 6. These simple movements tell drivers if a biker plans to turn or stop. “They’re like a secret language between riders and drivers.” David explained. Now riding to school daily, he strongly believes this skill should be taught in classrooms. “Why not start bike safety clubs ” he suggested. “Schools could have weekly classes showing students proper hand signals. No need for building new roads-just use your arms to stay safe.”
Christopher Garcia, a student from Lake View High School, has another idea. He thinks that the government should set up bike safety zones near busy crossroads. These zones could include clear markings and signs to guide bikers and warn drivers. “Drivers know they should slow down or stop when they see these signs.” Christopher explained. He even presented his design as an example. “If we add flashing lights and clear ‘Bike Zone’ signs at this busy crossroads near the school, students will pass through this area more safely.”
Jane Perez, a night rider from Lincoln High School, agrees it’s important for bikers to be noticed by drivers. Though her bike has three bright LED lights, many streets are still too dark and unsafe, “Many roads don’t have proper lighting.” she said. “We should add more bike-friendly streetlights, which can help drivers notice us from far away. This would be an efficient way to prevent accidents.”
