Everyone needs friends. There is an old saying, “Friends are God’s way of taking care of us.”
But how do you find friendship and keep it The American writer Sally Seamans tells young students some smart ways to find friends. Sally says finding friendship is just like planting a tree. You plant the seed and take care of it to make it grow.
First, a good friend should be kind and patient (而才心的). For example, if you have a bad day, a good friend should listen to your complaints (抱怨) and do his or her best to help. To make a good friend, you cannot be too shy. You should make each other happy and share your lives.
But things cannot always be happy. Even the best friends have fights (打架). What should you do when you have a fight with your friend You have to talk to him or her. When there is no one around, have an honest talk. If he or she doesn’t want to talk, you could write a letter.
There are three steps to being friends again: tell him or her how you are feeling, say what your friend has done wrong, and explain why you did this or that. Remember that friendship is the most important thing in your life.

Our Earth has lots of different places. Animals have to find ways to fit in environment (适应环境). This has something to do with biology and geography.
In hot deserts, there’s not much water. It’s very hot there. Camels (骆驼) are great at living in deserts. They have humps (驼峰) on their backs. The humps can hold a lot of fat When there’s no food or water for a long time, the fat turns into energy and water. This helps camels stay alive. Camels also have big, flat feet. Their feet help them walk on soft sand. They don’t sink (下沉) because of their feet.
Up in the cold Arctic, polar bears are the rulers. They are covered with thick, white fur. The fur keeps them warm. It also helps them hide (躲藏) in the snow. This way, they can catch food easily. Under their skin, polar bears have a thick layer of fat. The fat helps them stay warm in the cold Arctic. Their fur and fat are important for living in the icy place.
Tropical (热带的) rain forests have many different animals. Chameleons (变色龙) live there. They can do a cool thing-change their skin color. When the place around them changes color, chameleons change too. This helps them hide from animals that want to eat them. It also helps them catch their own food. The rainforest has many colors. A team of scientists found that spending two hours a week of class time in nature could help 10 to 12-year-olds with serious mental (心理的) health problems to feel better.
About 1, 000 children took part in the three-month-long study. They came from 33 different middle schools. All schools were near a park or green space. In the study, half of the children stayed at school, while the other half took part in some nature-based activities for two hours every week. During the two hours they spent in the park, scientists asked teachers to give their daily classes in subjects such as math, languages or science. Also, they asked teachers to hold some short 10-15-minute activities to improve students’ mental health. There were activities like drawing a tree, writing stories, talking about life in nature, and so on.
To see if there were changes in behavior (行为) over the study time, scientists asked students and teachers in the study to answer some questions. These questions could help scientists learn about the changes in children’s mental problems and behavioral difficulties.
The scientists found that after three months, the biggest changes in behavior appeared (出现) in children with the most serious mental problems, such as feeling nervous or having trouble getting along with classmates. Talks with the teachers also showed that children were more peaceful, relaxed and focused in class after the time spent in nature.
This study shows that nature-based programs can help children with more serious mental health problems. The programs may act as a helpful tool to ease school-aged children’s mental problems. According to the scientists, the results are meaningful for teachers to find better ways to help students in need. These low-cost and safe ways will play a bigger role in schools with green space.

Why do the leaves on trees have different colors What makes them change their colors
Leaves use sunlight, water and air to make food for the trees. This way of making food is called photosynthesis (光合作用). Photosynthesis is important to animals as well as plants. Some animals eat plants. Other animals eat these animals.
Summer is playtime. For the leaves of many trees, however, it’s work, work, work! The sun is shining. The leaves are making food for the trees. The trees keep more than enough food deep inside. Leaves are green in summer because they are making food. Leaves also have orange, yellow, or brown colors inside them. During summer, those colors are covered by the green color.
Many places get colder in autumn with shorter days and longer nights. Trees get less sunlight, so photosynthesis slows down. Over time, leaves stop making the green chemical (化学物质). The orange, yellow, and brown colors grow when that happens.
Once it gets cold enough and ice appears at night, the trees drop their leaves. They do this to keep themselves safe. If the leaves are icy while still on the trees, the trees can be hurt. Trees that drop their leaves are bare (光秃秃) in winter. They use the food they save in summer to get through the cold days and nights.
Spring comes before long. Ice and snow disappear and the rains come. The sun shines, and tiny leaves grow from branches. Once again, the leaves use sunlight, water and air to make food. The cycle begins again.

People know animals have feelings, but can we understand them Scientists studied dogs’ tails (尾巴) to find out. ____▲____ It says that humans can tell if a dog is happy or sad by watching its tail.
The researchers showed dogs different things. Sometimes they gave the dogs their favorite toys or food. Sometimes there was nothing. When dogs saw something they liked, they wagged (摇动) their tails fast and high. When there was nothing, their tails moved slowly and low. The scientists recorded these movements with a camera.
Then the researchers showed 10 videos of dog tails to 100 volunteers. Half of the videos showed happy tails, and half showed sad tails. About 70% of the volunteers correctly guessed the dogs’ feelings. Some volunteers had never even owned a dog before!
The result shows humans can naturally understand dogs’ feelings through their tails. Scientists hope this study will help people take better care of pets. Now, some are working on a special machine (机器) to detect dogs’ feelings automatically. This could make dogs’ lives happier.
