People often set many alarms to wake themselves up for fear of oversleeping. However, this can be bad for
one’s health because it makes sleep quality poorer, according to Brandon Peters, a doctor from Virginia Mason
Franciscan Health in Seattle, US.
A good sleep happens in cycles, according to Medical News Today. Each cycle has four stages (阶段).
During stage one, we go into a light sleep. Our body relaxes and our heartbeat (心跳) slows. As we fall deeper
into sleep, stage two begins. Our eyes stop moving and our body temperature drops. Then comes the third stage
which is the deepest sleep and also the hardest for people to wake up from.
Last is the fourth stage, known as rapid eye movement sleep, or REM sleep. Our eyes move rapidly from
side to side during this stage. At the same time, our breathing picks up and our heartbeat rises.
REM sleep is very important because most of our dreams take place during it. This allows our brain to
process emotions. REM sleep also helps the brain turn the new knowledge learned during the day into memories.
When we get enough REM sleep, it is easier to focus on studying the next day, said the National Sleep Foundation
of the US.
Since REM sleep mostly takes place in the last hours of a night’s sleep, it is a bad idea to disrupt (打扰) it
with alarms ringing one after another.
“My general advice is that you set one alarm,” said Alicia Roth at the Cleveland Clinic in the US. She also
suggested that people try alarms that use light, not sound, to wake up, according to CNN.

Don’t throw away your old phones. You are actually throwing away real gold! Smartphones contain many
useful things such as gold, silver and copper (铜). People can recycle them to make new electronics (电子器件).
But many people may not know this. In Australia alone there are more than 25 million unused mobile
phones lying around, Sydney Morning Herald reported. The gold in these phone s can add up to a value of more
than $80 million (542 million yuan). There are about 2 billion smartphone users around the world, who change
their phone once every 11 months on average. In China, people generate (产生) 80 million old phones every year,

but also harmful materials. Guiyu, a small town in Shantou, Guangdong, is one of the world’s biggest dumping
grounds (垃圾倾倒场) for electronic waste, Reuters reported. Many recycling centers in Guiyu simply break the
old electronics by hand and don’t think about the pollution it causes. According to a local government report, 81
percent of children in Guiyu are harmed by lead (铅) poisoning.
Veena Sahajwalla, a professor at Australia’s University of New South Wales, has made a mini factory. It
makes smartphone recycling cleaner and easier. The mini factory is very small and easy to move around. It breaks
the phones and automatically (自动地) removes the useful parts. That way, humans do not get poisoned.

In 987 AD, a woman named Lin Mo from Meizhou Island, Fujian province, lost her life at the age of 28
while trying to save fishermen. To honor her kindness, people built a temple on the island, making her a sea
goddess among fishermen. This is the story of Mazu.
As an important Chinese goddess, Mazu is at the center of many beliefs and customs, including folklore (民
俗) and religious (宗教的) ceremonies. In 2009, these traditions were added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural

ceremonial music using traditional Chinese instruments such as the bianzhong.
Mazu worship is not just inside the temple walls. Each year, a Mazu statue (神 像 ) is carried around
Meizhou Island to spread wishes of good luck. The sea goddess has also traveled overseas! In 2017, she flew to
Singapore and Malaysia, and a year later, she went on a cruise ship to the Philippines. Since Mazu was a real
person from history, people even gave her an ID number for buying tickets.
When Lin traveled with the Mazu statue on international journeys, he realized that the goddess has become
an important connection for Chinese communities overseas. In the future, he wants to better introduce Mazu
culture to the world. “Meizhou Mazu Temple works with universities for research on Mazu culture, and plans to
create social media content (内容) in different languages to promote (宣传) her stories,” Lin said.

A special show on “Folk (民间) Houses in China” took place in the RCF Experimental School in Beijing
on Sept. 17. Around 100 models of folk houses made by students were on show, including homes from canal (运
河) towns in the area south of the Yangtze River, Xizang and other places. Students created their beautiful models
by completing their own DIY jobs.
Gao Ruidi,13, from Jiangsu
In the area south of the Yangtze River, people live beside the river. I love people’s lifestyles there. So I
decided to make a group of buildings to show this, including a river with a bridge, classic houses and a pavilion
(亭子). When I made it, the pavilion kept falling over. To fix this, I finally changed from using plasticine (橡皮泥)
to wooden sticks (木棍). At last, I made it. With this experience, I saw the beauty of traditional folk houses.
Wu Maolin,13, from Anhui
I found Ma Tou Walls (马头墙) in the region south of the Yangtze River interesting because they looked
like staircases (楼梯). Before making my model, I looked up why they were built this way. In these areas, houses
are built close together, so if one house catches fire, it could quickly spread (传播) to others. To prevent this,
people build Ma Tou Walls that rise above the roofs. While making the model, I used mortise and tenon joints (榫
卯结构) to make the house stronger. By doing this, I knew ancient people were so clever. And it also helped me
learn more about traditional Chinese culture.

29.What happens to our body during REM sleep
A.Our heartbeat slows. B.Our breathing becomes faster.
C.Our eyes stop moving. D.Our body temperature drops.
30.What does Alicia Roth probably agree with
A.It is important to wake up naturally.
B.Sound alarms are better than light alarms.
C.Setting many alarms can help prevent oversleeping.
D.It’s better to avoid disturbing REM sleep with sounds.
31.What is the best title for the text

move rapidly from side to side during this stage. At the same time, our breathing picks up and our heartbeat rises.”

Don’t throw away your old phones. You are actually throwing away real gold! Smartphones contain many
