It might sound like magic, but in February, a paralyzed (瘫痪的) patient was able to drink water on his own
by controlling a special glove with his brain. The glove then acted as his hand.
This was a success in brain-machine interface (BMI, 脑机接口) technology made by a team of Chinese
scientists and doctors.
BMI refers to creating a connection between the human brain and external devices (外部设备), making
communication between the brain and computers. For paralyzed people, BMI can allow them to move and do
simple things by themselves.
On Oct 24, 2023, the team put a BMI chip (芯片) in the patient’s head. The chip can receive neural signals
(神经信号) from the brain.
After three months of home recovery training, the patient can now use his brain signals to control a special
glove powered by air pressure. This helps him do things like drinking water on his own.
BMI technology usually means putting chips directly onto the patient’s brain. However, this project is
minimally invasive (微创的), making sure the patient’s brain is not harmed. So it is an important achievement. It
also uses a wireless power supply (无线电源), so the implanted (植入的) device doesn’t need a battery.
Li Yuanning from ShanghaiTech University told CCTV News that BMI is now mainly used in the medical
field to improve the lives of people with brain-related problems or speech difficulties.
In China, BMI technology is still in the early stages of research, with no products on the market yet. Some
people are worried that tests may influence patients’ independence (独 立 ) and even who they are. Ethical
concerns (伦 理 问 题 ) related to BMI also need to be soled. These include whether the patient has a clear
understanding of what is going on when they agree to take part in the test.
29.What is China’s recent success in BMI
A.A BMI chip was successfully put into a patient’s brain.
B.BMI helped a paralyzed patient drink water on his own.
C.A paralyzed patient can move freely with a BMI chip.
D.A paralyzed patient can communicate with computers.
30.What is the external device in the recent experiment
A.A BMI chip. B.A neural signal. C.The brain. D.An air pressure-powered glove.
31.What is the advantage of the new BMI technology
A.It doesn’t harm patients’ brains. B.It doesn’t need any power.
C.It understands patients’ needs correctly. D.It helps people improve their speech skills.
32.What do we know from the last paragraph
A.Many people are against BMI technology.
B.The tests of BMI are at high risk of failure.
C.BMI technology is still under development.
D.BMI technology is widely used in the medical field.
C
In China, more people are choosing to visit places that aren’t very famous instead of going to popular
tourist spots. This is called “reverse tourism (逆向旅游),” and it’s becoming popular among young people.
An online travel agency (旅行社) says that during the holiday, hotels in less-known cities had 30% more
bookings than last year. Four-star and five-star hotels in these places also saw their bookings go up by at least 10
times. Some lesser-known spots had a big increase in visitors. For example, Baimaiquan Park in Jinan, a city in
Shandong Province, had 52,100 visitors over seven days. That’s 15.78% more than last year.
People choose less-known places for a few reasons. There are fewer crowds, and it’s cheaper than going to
popular places. These places are also less commercial (商业的), which means they feel more real and special.
These reasons show that people’s travel needs are changing, and that may be the main cause of the rise of reverse
tourism.
Zhengzhou Daily says that reverse tourism is not a bad thing. It gives travelers more choices and helps the
tourism market grow. It also pushes less-known places to get better.
Jiang Han, a researcher, thinks reverse tourism is here to stay. He suggests that people should explore the
hidden possibility of these less-known places. We need to learn more about local culture and show off the special
things these places have to offer.
33.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A.Travel agencies in China. B.Tourism and the commerce.
C.Hotels making a lot of money. D.The growth of reverse tourism.
34.What may be the main cause of the rise of reverse tourism
A.There are fewer crowds.
B.The cheaper prices of the less-known places.
C.People’s travel needs are changing.
D.There is no improvement in famous sports.
35.What does Zhengzhou Daily think of reverse tourism
A.It will disappear when the economy (经济) gets better.
B.It is good for both tourists and the tourism market.
C.It helps spread local culture.
D.It hurts popular tourist spots.
36.What is Jiang Han’s advice on the tourism market
A.Improving the spots in tourist areas.
B.Making better rules for tourist spots.
C.Exploring the possibility of less-known places.
D.Encouraging local culture online.

“Look! Letters from Leo! Granny will be excited!” Mom said.
Andy turned toward his mother. “Leo ”
“Granny’s oldest and favorite brother. He made her that special box that sits beside the window—locked up.
The key’s been lost forever. Now about those letters...Granny will want them.”

of a sunflower.”
Andy was on his way. In a few seconds, he returned, carrying the painting. They discovered another clue
printed in light pencil on the back. Andy read, “Look above the hole where rain does not come down. See the
broken time piece There! Inside!”
He ran to the fireplace then gave the clock to Granny. “This clock has never kept time.” Granny opened the
clock’s tiny glass door and reached inside. “All those years. It’s been right here.” She opened the box with the key
and looked into it.
There is a photo of a girl and her big brother. On the back of the photo was printed: I NEW you’d worked it
out. Use this box for all your special treasures. Love, Leo.

Sometimes, separating waste can take a lot of time. To properly recycle a plastic bottle, for example, we
should pour out anything in the bottle and flatten (压平) the bottle before putting the cap back on and throwing it
in the recycling bin. But that’s nothing compared to (与……相比) the recycling efforts of people in Kamikatsu, a
village in southwestern Japan. The 1,500 villagers there are on a path to a zero-waste life.
The Zero Waste Centre is Kamikatsu’s recycling facility (场所). There, the villagers separate their waste
into 45 groups—there are nine groups for paper products alone. They clean and dry dirty items to make them
ready for recycling.
The village runs a reward system (奖 励 制 度 ). People can collect recycling points in exchange for
environmentally friendly products. There are signs that show what new items will be made from the recyclables.
The village often reports how much money it has saved by working with recycling companies rather than burning
all the waste.
Next to the Zero Waste Centre is a special shop. There villagers can drop off items they don’t want any
more, and others can take them home. This past January alone, about 450 kilograms of items were re-homed. The
number is shown in the shop.
In 2020, Hotel Why opened its door to the public. It is built in the shape of a question mark as if it was
asking, “Why do we create so much waste ” At check-in, guests cut bars of soap to get just the amount of they

It also pushes less-known places to get better.

and looked into it.
There is a photo of a girl and her big brother. On the back of the photo was printed: I NEW you’d worked it
