I woke up with a start and looked at the clock in front of me — 5:00 am. The whole night I had been dreaming and planning various things I wanted to do. After all, it was my 16th birthday!
Yesterday, none of my family had shown any sign to indicate that they’ d remembered the fact that my birthday was only 24 hours away. They might have been planning a surprise for me!
I raced downstairs. “Well, you’ re up early,” my dad said, his eyes fixed upon the newspaper. My mother, who was cooking breakfast, paid me no attention.
“Have they forgotten about me ” I wondered. “No, they would never do that.”
“Mama, I was wondering if you could cook me some pancakes,” I said in a cheerful tone. “Jessie, I am in a hurry today. I am afraid I don’t have time to make you pancakes,” my mother said.
None of them seemed to be aware of my special day. At least for my sake, they could’ve given it some importance. And none of my brothers seemed to be interested in my birthday either.
I felt a bit down. For months we had been planning events for my birthday — shopping, games, decorations and so much more— but now, they all seemed to have forgotten about my birthday.
Lunch was boring, with nothing special cooked for my special day. Everyone sat talking about random (随意的) things, not once mentioning my birthday.
Disappointed, I climbed up the stairs to my room and lay down in bed. Suddenly, Mom called out to me. I dashed (急奔) towards her, hoping to hear something cheerful. But my optimism (乐观) disappeared when she said, “Me, your dad and your brothers are attending a dinner. Since you woke up early, we thought you might need some sleep. If you feel hungry, there’s food in the fridge. Call if you need help. Bye, and be a good girl.”

(2) [2025·新疆·二模] To my mother, the four basic food groups are meat, milk, grain and coleslaw (凉拌菜丝)—pieces of raw cabbage, carrot, onion, etc. mixed with sauce. And she always thinks highly of her handmade coleslaw. In our house, the coleslaw always goes on the table in a bowl.
I love Mom's coleslaw, but there was a time I distinctly remember when it caused absolute panic within me. Early in the first grade, I raced home from school with a collection of papers handed to me by my class teacher Mary. As I rushed through the front door, I immediately ran to the kitchen where Mom was making chicken noodle soup. Holding the papers, I begged, “Read them to me, Mom, please!”
Slowly she started reading aloud. I smiled with delight as she read to me what seemed an almost endless list of exciting adventures waiting for me in the coming year. And then, it happened.
“It's a tradition for a mother to bring a homemade treat for the class to share on her child's birthday,” she read. “It needn't be anything fancy, just something you enjoy making.” The words floated through the air in painfully slow motion. The phrase “just something you enjoy making” kept appearing inside my head.
Until my birthday in April, I lived in fear that Mom would arrive at school with a cart full of her coleslaw for everyone to share. I imagined the classmates laughing at me, “Who would bring coleslaw on his birthday Oh, stupid Tom!”
When I left for school on the morning of my birthday, Mom was making cakes. I had relief and was glad she would bring the cakes. But then, I found there were a great many raw vegetables in the fridge. “Will you also make coleslaw for me, Mom ” I asked, shocked.

Dayna and I are best friends. Cupcakes turned us into fierce competitors. As we prepared for the annual Baking Competition at the Baking Club, I confidently told her, “Prepare to be amazed.” She shot me a skeptical look. The event was packed with family and friends, and I was determined to beat last year’s champion, Dayna.
Mrs. Cooper from Cathy’s Cupcake and Donut Depot kicked off the competition by announcing that the first round was to bake mini cupcakes. The clock started ticking. Measuring spoons pinged against bowls. Clouds of flour settled on the countertops. Mixers whirred. Everything was going perfectly, and I tasted my creation. Mmm. Bright and amazing. Then I glanced over to see how Dayna was doing. She had accidentally dropped a dozen eggs! I turned off my mixer and rushed over to her station to help her clean up, praying my good deed wouldn’t ruin my chances.
After the mess was cleared, everyone including Dayna continued baking, and the judges tasted our cupcakes. When the results came in, I was thrilled to hear my name called for Round 2 alongside Dayna and a few others. The challenge this time was to bake standard cupcakes, but just then, I realized I’d forgotten to bring my candies for decoration. In a panic, I signaled Dayna, who kindly offered butter crackers and banana chips. Thanks to her, I was back on track. As we worked through the round, Mrs. Cooper announced that Dayna and I were moving on to the final round: colossal cupcakes (巨型杯子蛋糕).
I made it. Whew. I can’t let her win again. “You showed some mad skills, Isaac,” Dayna said, her voice laced with respect. I shrugged. “You too. Thanks for saving me before.”
“No problem. May the best baker win,” she said.
I smiled. “Enough with the pleasantries. Now I’m out for sweet revenge.”
Dayna narrowed her eyes. “Bring it.”

School was out! I grabbed my backpack and headed to the library for my favorite after-school activity: Writing Club. Miss Lisa, our writing club leader asked us to share stories with a critique partner, who was to give helpful feedback so as to make the best story. My critique partner was Penny. We sat at a table and pushed our stories toward each other. I was nervous. I had no problem coming up with great story ideas but did have problems with spelling, grammar and punctuation. Penny was worried, but why She always got perfect scores on her spelling and grammar tests.
I read her story without stopping. It was about a dog named Sunny who found a home after saving a family from the flooding river. I loved it. “Wow, great story,” I told her. “I don’t have any suggestions. It’s perfect!” “Yours too,” she mumbled. She didn’t even look at me as she passed mine back. When Miss Lisa announced the end of the class, Penny looked relieved. She jumped up and grabbed her backpack. Everything fell out. She put her stuff back in carelessly and hurried out of the library. I noticed a book under the table. It must have fallen out of Penny’s bag. The title was Sunny the Brave. That sounded familiar. I read the description on the back. It was just like Penny’s story! It was longer, with some different words, but the plot was exactly the same. I couldn’t believe it. Penny had copied this idea!
On my way home, I kept thinking about telling it to Miss Lisa. As I got home, I found my Mom and Dad were in the kitchen making dinner. Dad chopped vegetables into perfect shapes. Mom stirred a sauce on the stove. I realized that Mom and Dad had different skills, making them a great creative team. With Dad’s attention to detail and Mom’s sense of adventure, their dinners turned out delicious. That gave me a better idea.

(5) [2025届·广西·三模联考] Alex grew up in the shadow of his father’s early death, raised up by his mother who worked tirelessly to make ends meet. The weight of loneliness bore heavily on him, and the condition was worsened by a disease called dyslexia (阅读障碍症) that left him feeling deeply inferior (自卑的) to those around him. Books were alien existence to him and reading was a battle he had lost for a long time.
One bright summer afternoon, fate led Alex to an elderly woman named Margaret. She sat beneath a grand oak tree, her fingers tracing the words on the pages of an old, weathered book. Bored but curious, Alex approached her cautiously.
"Would you like to hear a story " Margaret asked with a gentle smile, her voice soft yet inviting.
Alex hesitated for a moment before nodding. "Okay."
Margaret welcomed him into her world of stories, weaving tales that painted vivid pictures in his mind and sparked a curiosity deeply within him.
Over time, their meetings became a cherished routine. Each week, Margaret would select a new story, her voice dancing with emotion as she narrated the adventures of heroes and the wisdom of ordinary and extraordinary people. Her insights, shared with such passion and depth, resonated (引起共鸣) deeply with Alex, arousing a flame of understanding and empathy within him. Under her patient guidance, Alex began to conquer his fear of reading, discovering the magic behind those once unfamiliar words.
"You know," Margaret said one day as they sat together under the oak tree, "reading is like opening a door to another world. It allows us to experience things we’ve never seen and understand feelings we’ve never known. We see ourselves in these stories; we understand ourselves and the world better."
As the seasons changed, so did Alex. His once simple and timid speech evolved into appealing expressions filled with profound thoughts and reflections. He found joy in sharing his newfound knowledge with others, his confidence blossoming like a flower reaching for the sun. Yet, behind this transformation, a shadow quietly came — Margaret’s eyesight gradually worsened, making it increasingly difficult for her to read.

“Jessalyn, you’re after Esha,” Mrs. Lockwood informed me. Esha was standing at the front of the class with her poster turned backward. Mrs. Lockwood said we needed to share something no one else knew about us. “One thing about me you may not know - I have a black cat, named Sultana, who never meows! She has five toes on her front left paw, which is a little creepy, I admit. Sultana likes to go out exploring in the morning.” Then Esha turned the poster board to reveal a stunning photograph of herself and Shadow - my black cat. My cat! Sultana on the poster was identical to Shadow, down to the spot of white fur on her throat. Why was Esha doing a presentation on Shadow Thunderous applause went around the classroom as Esha returned to her seat. Without time to think, I quickly walked onto the stage and held up my poster - a photo of my cat. “There’s something no one knows about me, which is I have a pet named Shadow. She’s a black cat with five toes on her front left pa w and she never meows.” My voice trembled. “One interesting thing about Shadow is she never appears at home in the afternoon.” The whole class was looking at me like I’d lost my mind, and I couldn’t continue, running back to my seat.
“Jessalyn and Esha, see me after class,” Mrs. Lockwood said. Minutes later, I stood side by side with Esha, who kept looking at my poster and then back at her own. “It’s rather obvious,” Mrs. Lockwood laughed, “that someone here copied someone else. You have the weekend to work out who should come up with a different topic. Monday, I expect one of you to give a new presentation.”
I followed Esha into the hallway. “Sultana is my cat,” she proclaimed. “I am one hundred percent positive.” “I don’t know who Sultana is, but Shadow is mine.” I said quietly. Her forehead scrunched up. “Why don’t you come to my house today after school And you can see for yourself. I live at 55 Maddux Drive.”

Should We Use AI for Assignments
Recently, our schoolmates have had a heated discussion on whether we should use AI when doing the assignments. Opinions vary from person to person.
Some students hold the belief that we should embrace AI fully, because it can improve our efficiency. However, others think that we may depend on AI too much and lack critical thinking.
From my perspective, using AI for the assignments can be a double-edged sword. It’s crucial to balance reliance on AI with independent study. We can’t forget to practice our independent thinking and critical thinking in the age of AI. Therefore, when doing homework, we should do it on our own first, and then use AI to polish and perfect it.

Dear fellow students,
I’m Li Hua, and I’m quite honored to talk about "AI and Job Replacement". AI may replace repetitive jobs like data-entry clerks and some assembly-line workers. That’s because AI can process data and perform physical tasks with high speed and accuracy. As teenagers, we should focus on developing creativity and emotional intelligence. These qualities are hard for AI to replicate. By enhancing our unique abilities, we can better adapt to the changing job market.
Thank you!

My Preference for the Study Tour
Among the two options for the study tour, I would choose the Space Science Museum without hesitation.
First of all, the museum offers a unique opportunity to explore the mysteries of the universe, which can greatly arouse our curiosity about science and technology. Moreover, it’s the interactive exhibitions there that allow us to experience space missions first-hand. Meanwhile, by learning about spacecrafts, satellite systems and China’s remarkable achievements in space, we can connect our understanding of physics and astronomy with practical life skills.
I firmly believe that not only will this choice broaden our horizons but it will also inspire us to have a greater passion for innovation and exploration.

They all waved goodbye one by one, leaving me alone in the house. I ran to my room and closed the door, crying myself to sleep. Suddenly, I heard something. I observed my surroundings, but there was nothing unusual in my bedroom. I jumped out of my bed, sure that someone was there in the house. “I…I’ve already called the police. You can’t escape!” I shouted. I knew that my threat sounded useless and worthless, but I had to give it a try. With all my courage, I opened the door.
“Surprise!” a lot of voices called out. Trying to find out what was happening, I looked around. All my friends, my parents and my brothers came inside the room, holding my birthday cake. I felt so overwhelmed and began to cry. “Oh, I thought you all had forgotten, “I said, fighting back tears. “Not as long as I am alive,” came the voice of a lady. Someone was standing at the door — it was my grandmother! I rushed to her and gave her a hug. That was the best birthday of my life!

Panic swept over me as I looked at Mom for an answer. She said, “It's a secret and a surprise.” Just then, the school bus came. “Don't bring the coleslaw,” I shouted angrily, hurrying for the bus. Mom just laughed. All morning, I was anxious. At 12: 00, Mom showed up with cupcakes and also coleslaw. I felt embarrassed, annoyed and worried about my classmates' reaction. Mom walked to Mary and gave her a cupcake and some coleslaw placed on a paper plate. Curiously, she tasted the coleslaw.
“Wow, how delicious!” Mary said , and then all the others expected the coleslaw. I was surprised. When more and more classmates gave positive response, my initial fear turned into relief and joy. “Your mom is so talented! Will you bring some next time ” many classmates asked. After school, I rushed home, hugging Mom and apologizing for shouting at her in the morning. Meanwhile, I thanked her for giving me such a wonderful birthday. My mother made the best coleslaw, and she made the best memories, too.

Final round. I sprang into action. Measuring and mixing, I grated dark chocolate and sprinkled it over the dough, determined to create a showstopper. Dayna wouldn’t know what hit her. I filled each cupcake mold and got my colossals into the oven. At Dayna’s station, three different layers — chocolate, vanilla and strawberry — sat ready. That would be a masterpiece. Unfortunately, the beautiful layered look she wanted was turning into a tie-dye effect. Still, she wasn’t giving up. At last, my colossal cupcakes were nothing short of elegance. Dayna’s turned out way better than I’d expected. As we waited for the final results, Dayna expressed doubt about her cupcakes, but I wasn’t sure of my own outcome either.
After a tense few minutes, the winner was announced: “Isaac!” I blinked with disbelief. As thunderous applause erupted, I gave a small bow. “Congratulations, Isaac!” My best friend clapped along with the crowd. I gave Dayna a shy smile. “Couldn’t have done it without you, Dayna. Thanks for saving me before.” Despite the competition, we were still a team, and that night, I called Dayna to discuss our next move. “So now we’re tied,” I said. “One win each.” She asked, “Already planning for next year ” I replied with a grin, “You can bet on it!” At that moment, I realized that no matter what the outcome was, our friendship was the sweetest victory of all.

At school the next morning, I walked over to Penny, held out the book and said, “You dropped this.”Penny took the book from my hand, her eyes wide with surprise and a hint of fear. She sniffed and wiped her nose on her sleeve. She was crying! “I’m sorry,” she whispered. “It was wrong of me to copy the story but I never had a single idea for a story and just wanted to write something good.” Seeing the tears welling up in her eyes, I told her that my job as her critique partner was to give helpful feedback, not to make her feel bad. So I proposed that we co-write a new story, just like how my parents worked together in the kitchen.
Penny and I decided to write a new story together. We sat down at a table and started brainstorming. Finally, we locked in a story about a magical forest. She helped me with my spelling and grammar, while I helped her come up with more creative plot bining our strengths, we made a great creative team. By the end of the day, we had a fantastic story that was truly ours. We both felt proud and relieved. Miss Lisa was impressed with our teamwork and our new story.

Another summer afternoon, Margaret told Alex that she could no longer see the words. Frustrated but obviously prepared, "I can read for you," Alex offered, his voice trembling with determination. Just in this way, they exchanged their roles. Alex tried hard to practise those once familiar words every moment when he was free. Under the same grand oak tree, he became the storyteller, pouring his soul into every word he read aloud, while Margaret listened intently and recreated every page in her mind, her heart swelling with pride at the young man she had helped shape.
The friendship built from a chance encounter brightened two lives. For Alex, every word he read aloud was a victory over adversity, a testament that love for learning knows no bounds, regardless of when or where it begins. For Margaret, old age defeated her vision but not her heart. She saw the world through storytelling and what made her more gratified was the great changes she had brought to the young man. The two explored unknown fields through reading and storytelling and each story became a bridge, connecting their pasts and healing their wounds. True literacy goes beyond mere comprehension of text but lies in the ability to touch lives and inspire changes.

To my surprise, Esha’s house ended up being just a couple blocks from where I lived. In her bedroom, a black cat was lying on the bed. “That’s Sultana!” Esha shrieked. Sultana was exactly like Shadow. I was so stunned that I didn’t know what to say. “I do have a cat named Shadow,” I just said. “Let’s go to see her right now,” Esha suggested. I again stressed that Shadow wouldn’t be home in the afternoon. “Are you lying about having a cat ” She asked loudly. I asked Esha to follow Sultana tomorrow morning.
The next morning, bright and early, Esha followed Sultana just as I suggested. When seeing the cat climbing the fence and going straight into my backyard with ease, Esha was left gaping in astonishment. It turned out that everything was just as I guessed. The cat stayed with me in the morning and accompanied Esha in the afternoon. “We can make a presentation together to share a thing that nobody knew about us - a five-toe cat without meows living with two different families,” Esha suggested excitedly.
