The old farmer sighed as he looked over his ruined crops. A terrible storm had swept throogh the valley the night before, and his once lush and green felds were now damaged and muddy. His neighbor, a kind young man named Thomas, came by to offer his help.
"This is a calamity."the farmer said. "My family has always been able to survive on the yield of this harvest. I don’t know what we will do now."
Thomas thought for a moment. "I see this not as a disaster but as a chance,"he said gently.
The farmer looked at him in disbelief. "How can this be an opportunity "he asked.
Thomas smiled. "Now you have a chance to try something new. You’ve always grown beans and squash (西葫芦). Why not ty planting different crops that will thrive (茁壮成长) in this soil
You can diversify and strengthen your farm."
The farmer considered this. Thomas was right - he had become set in his ways. This disaster could push him to make his farm sustainable in new ways.
"You have given me hope again,"the farmer said. He clapped Thomas on the back. "Thank you for showing this old man the opportunity in this difficulty. My farm will be better for it."

It’s mid-atternoon. You’re full from lunch. The day is warm. You’re starting to feel sleepy.
Should you give in to the comfort of a nap (小睡)
From the viewpoint of health, it may be worth it. While there is a debate when it comes to whether napping benefits everyone, we generally acknowledge that naps can improve at least some people’s cognitive (认知的) performance in the short term.
For example, scientists reviewed a past experiment that focused on healthy participants with regular sleep cycles. In that experiment, participants were given math problems that could be solved with a shortcut that they weren’t told about. Some participants were encouraged to take a nap before dealing with the problems. The experiment showed that those who napped and spent even just 30 seconds in the first, lightest stage of sleep were 2.7 times more likely to work out the math shortcut than those who stayed awake. But entering a deeper sleep stage had a negative effect.
The benefts of napping are strongest for people who have sleep debt, such as shift workers, new parents and elderly people whose nightime sleep is always interrupted. They all seem to get a boost through napping. A 2013 study focusing on such people, for example, showed that taking a nap during one’s night shift work reduced sleepiness and improved overall performance, even if people were slightly inactive as they came out of their nap - a phenom c non called "slecep incria (惰性)".
There is something we can do to reduce sleep inertia. A 20-minute nap is good for recharging, and 60 to 90 minutes of sleep can be even more restorative. The nap to avoid is one lasting more than 20 minutes and less than 60 minutes, which is most likely to lead to sleep inertia.
18. What is the main benefit of taking a nap
A. It allows you to have a sound sleep quickly.
B. It may enharrce-your cognitive performance.
C. It is beneficial to your physical and mental health.
D. It boosts brain function of solving math problems.
19. What can you infer from the experiment in paragraph 3
A. Light naps help tackle problems more easily.
B. Longer sleep contributes to solving problems.
C. Participants who have sleep debt are more healthy.
D. Participants who are awake don’t know the shortcut.
20. What do you know about the subjects of the 2013 study
A. They were active in daytime.
B. They don’t feel sleepy after a nap.
C. They had no trouble sleeping at night.
D. They didn’t get enough nighttime sleep.
21. How can sleep inertia be avoided
A. By napping 25 minutes. B. By napping 50 minutes.
C. By napping 80 minutes. D.By napping 95 minutes.
D
Fans of art believe that its main purpose is to make us look at life from many different angles.
When it comes to Cubism (立体主义), however, the artists wanted us to look at life from every angle.
The father of Cubism, Spanish artist Pablo Picasso, is among the art world's most famous names. Like many other great names before him, he felt restricted by the rules of his teachers and decided to do something to break them.
Early in his painting career, Picasso realized something mportant about how people view beauty. When we look at a subject, we don’t just see it from one angle, as many paintings appear. Instead, we study the subject from a number of different angles. This is the aim of Cubism: It draws subjects from a wide range of angles. To bring his visions to life, Picasso and other Cubists took the basic parts of a subject and rearranged them in a way which let us see it in full detail.
"By breaking objects down into different areas, Picasso aimed to show different viewpoints at the same time and within the same space," in the words of the Tate Institution. As Cubist Jacques Lipchitz once put it: "Cubism is like standing at a certain point on a mountain and looking around If you go higher, things will look different; if you go lower, again they will look different."
Cubism stood out as it didnt just rely on the artist to share their vision by painting what they saw. Viewers must use their imaginations to find the missing pieces and interesting angles for themselves. As Guardian art critic Johnathan Jones noted, this is part of the beauty of enjoying Picasso’s works. "If you can enjoy the painting long enough, something really amazing happens,"
he wrote.
22. How do Cubists achieve their artistic goal
A. By using multiple angles.
B. By painting realistic details.
C. By copying great masterpieces.
D. By presenting scenes of life to viewers.
23. Why are Jacques Lipchitz’s words quoted
A. To point out the origin of cubism.
B. To compare cubism with other schools of art.
C. To show his understanding of what cubism was.
D. To show that mountains were a common subject in cubism.
24. Which word would Jonathan Jones probably use to describe cubist works
A. Life-like. B. Traditional. C. Colorful. D. Imaginative.
25. Which is the best title for the passage
A. The Development of Cubism. B. Seeing Cubism From Every Side.
C. How to Paint Like a Cubist Artist. D. Picasso: The Man Who Broke Art Rules.
