Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
Step 4
Step 5

Many people today use modern aluminum (铝) snowshoes when they go out in the snow. These are sold in most outdoor stores and rented for short-term use. However, traditional wooden snowshoes are becoming popular again.
Bern Crawford has been making traditional wooden snowshoes for over 40 years. He first learned to fix his own snowshoes and later started making them himself. At first, he made only a few pairs each year as gifts. But as more people became interested, he started receiving more requests. Now, he makes about 80 pairs a year. Recently, a school even ordered 215 pairs for its outdoor programs.
There are several styles of traditional snowshoes, such as bear paw, beavertail, and Ojibway. Each style is designed for different types of snow. For example, snowshoes with smaller holes are better for deep, soft snow, while those with larger holes work well in wet snow because they let the snow fall through more easily.
Crawford says traditional snowshoes are often lighter and look more beautiful. Many people find them more attractive than modern aluminum snowshoes, which have a plastic center. Also, modern snowshoes can be more expensive than traditional ones, depending on where you buy them.
Although more people are interested in using traditional snowshoes, fewer people want to learn how to make them. Crawford has taught snowshoe-making classes in schools, but most students only try it once and then stop. Making snowshoes from scratch takes a lot of time and effort. He says, “People enjoy learning part of the process, but they don’t want to cut and bend the wood themselves.”
Even though making traditional snowshoes may be a disappearing skill, the growing interest in using them shows that their beauty and usefulness will not be forgotten.
Traditional Snowshoes Are Back
Modern Snowshoes Made of aluminum; 6 and rented in stores.

The twenty-first century is already turning out to be the century of modern technologies. The technological revolution (革命) that started after World War Ⅱ is now developing more quickly. Computing and other technological development is beginning to reach into influence and take over nearly every part of our lives. The two main influences modern computing has had on our lives are in the areas of economics (经济学) and communications.
Technology has led to big changes in economics. Businesses now have to use cloud services or machine learning or failure risk. So the results of technologies decide the development of every big company. For example, Coca Cola, Huawei and Tencent (腾讯) sell different products and services, yet they all share one basic feature—without modern computing services, their operations would break down. New technologies play an important role in economics.
The other important influence of technological change is in the way of communication. For example, in the past, people wrote letters or talked on fixed phones, which slowed down the communication process. Now they send emails and text messages, or chat using mobile phones. Instead of waiting weeks for a letter or spending time finding a fixed phone, we can communicate right away. New forms of communication are cheaper or free. As a result, now people who live thousands of kilometres away from each other can communicate whenever they want.
In conclusion, computing and new technologies have had a great influence on our lives in many ways. And they have had the greatest influence in business and communication. In the future, if technology continues developing at such speed, our business and communication will have even greater changes. It is already starting to bring changes to other parts of our lives, such as transportation and health.

Imagine watching a movie in a foreign language or attending a lecture where the speaker talks fast, the subtitles (字幕) appear directly on your glasses. Isn’t that amazing
Recently, an ordinary yet "magical" pair of glasses—the AR Smart Glasses—has hit the market, which goes far beyond regular translation tools by offering hands-free, screen-free, real-time interactive translation.
The AR Smart Glasses are lightweight and comfortable to wear. They look just like regular glasses, but the “magic” hidden within them can’t be ignored (忽视).
The coolest feature of the AR Smart Glasses is their special translator. When people talk with someone, they can just point the glasses’ camera at the person they’re talking to, and the translation appears on the screen. When people visit a new city wearing AR Smart Glasses, they can simply look at any text, and a translation quickly appears in their view. If they get lost and need directions, the glasses can connect with GPS apps and show them translated directions right in front of their eyes. Even for language learners, it would be wonderful to practice a new language by seeing the words they hear being translated simultaneously (同步地). Learning a language can become quicker, easier, and more certain.
Since translation tools like the AR Smart Glasses help people understand words easily, some people start to question whether it’s still necessary to learn English, or any other foreign languages. In fact, knowing a new language is more than just that. When you speak a language fluently, you understand the way people talk, the jokes they make, and the special meanings behind their words. This helps you connect with people better and make real friends. Also, being able to speak more than one language makes you smarter. It helps you think in new ways and solve problems more easily. In a word, learning a language isn’t just about understanding words. More importantly, it’s about real connections with native speakers and a different point of view to see the world.

Few nations in the world have calligraphy (书法) as a form of art. In China, calligraphy has a long history and has kept a close relationship with Chinese cultural development.
Calligraphy looks simple. It seems as if anyone can write Chinese characters (汉字) on paper with a writing brush and become a calligrapher (书法家). In fact, that is not true. Calligraphy is a form of art that requires many skills, so there are not many calligraphers that have long-lasting works.

These are foods that are partially or fully prepared in advance, reducing the time and effort needed for cooking. They come in various forms, from ready-to-eat meals like sandwiches to ready-to-cook kits with pre-cut vegetables and marinated (腌制过的) meats.
The rise of pre-made food can be for several factors. Busy lifestyles leave people with little time for traditional cooking. (2025·四川成都·一模)You know that eating healthy, staying active, and working out a few brain games can help keep you intelligent. But these not well-known habits also work wonders, too.
When we are sad or afraid, we probably slouch This position causes us to feel worried or upset. It makes it harder to think clearly and remember things. In a study of 125 university students, 56 percent found it easier to do maths problems when they sat up straight than when they slumped down (垂头丧气). Sitting tall does improve memory because it helps blood and O flow to the brain-by up to 40 percent.
Having trouble remembering faces In a small study, researchers showed pictures of faces to older people on two different days and after two different kinds of exercise. On one day, they rode bikes for 20 minutes and made sure they breathed heavily but were still able to talk. On the other day, they simply sat on a self-pedaling (自踏板) bike for 20 minutes. After all, people remembered the faces better after the single exercise.
As we all know, too much screen time can hurt a child’s cognitive (认知) development. But what about those old people It was a long-term study for those who were over 50, and they were healthy as well. It was found that people who watched more than three and a half hours of TV a day for six years experienced a greater drop in memory test scores than those who watched less. Another study found that watching violent (暴力) programming harms people’s memory as well.
When trying to recall something, don’t just think “walk backward”. In a series of experiments, people viewed a video of a movie, a word list or a set of pictures. Then they imagined walking forward or backward, watched a video that moved forward or backward, or actually walked forward or backward. Some people also sat still. Backward move, whether real, imagined, or watched, is better than forward move.
86 Sit tall●Slouching makes it harder to think clearly and remember things. ●Sitting up straight improves memory by 87 blood and oxygen flow to the brain-by up to 40 percent.Exercise for memory ●Cycling helps to remember faces better. ●Active exercise 88 better memory compared to sitting still.Lessen screen time ●For older people over 50, watching TV for more than three and a half hours daily for six years can make their memory 89 ●Watching violent TV shows can also hurt people’s memory, not just for kids but for adults too. 90 ●Imagining or actually walking backward is better for recalling than walking forward. ●Going forward is not as good for memory as going backward.

Where does your food come from How is it made These days, many people worry about food safety. But food safety is not a new worry. In 1906, Upton Sinclair wrote The Jungle. The book is the story of a poor family in Chicago. It is also about the dangerous ways that food was prepared. People were so afraid that the U. S. started testing food.
These days, most food in the world is safe. The reason is laws control where food comes from. They also control how food is managed and prepared. Laws are important. But it’s more important to make sure the rules are followed. A good food safety system keeps people safe. It also helps them eat healthy food. Labels (标签) on food give people important information. Then they can make good choices about their food.
Although food safety systems usually work, there can be problems. Sometimes mistakes are made. For example, a truck might carry eggs and then ice cream. The ice cream could make people sick when the truck isn’t cleaned before carrying it. Other problems are not mistakes. Sometimes companies break rules to make more money. When this happens, people don’t know if their food is safe.
As we all know, food is closely related to our everyday life. We should take action to make food safer!

January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This smart program can work out math problems, write code, and answer questions like top models such as Open AI’s GPT 4.0, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $5.58 million (1/70 of Open AI’s cost) and used 2,048 computer chips for two months. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.
DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. For example, in a global math test, it got 79.8% right, slightly higher than Open AI’s model. A simple version of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, more than 19, 000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost $10 instead of $300 with other AIs. Even Meta (a famous U.S. tech company) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
U.S. tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts say China is catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a “big step forward”, proving that smart ideas beat expensive tools.
As a DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use. With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.”
Chinese AI Model DeepSeek-R1 101 the World
102 January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. On its first day online, 103 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it.

Passage 21
(24-25九年级下·江苏南京)We often hear a parent shout, “Tidy your room!”. It’s thought that an unmade bed and messy (杂乱) floor can make other family members stressed.
A study found that mess and managing it are “central and important to happiness” while a messy living space make people more stressed, especially in women. On the other hand, some untidiness may be the sign of creativity. So what do you think, is it OK to have a messy bedroom Recently, this topic has caused hot discussion online.
Yes—it’s not a big deal
It is important for children to have their own space where they can be themselves. By allowing children to keep their room as they want, parents are helping children prepare for later life. Also, clearing up your room is a waste of time and there are more important things to focus on, like work and hobbies. Anyway, there is a great chance of getting the room messy again.
No—messiness leads to bad feelings
Research shows that in a messy room, you may feel worried and can’t focus on tasks like homework. A tidy room can improve clear thinking and calmness. It also means you have more space for activities and won’t lose things. What’s more, mess might be dangerous—you can fall down or knock something onto the floor and break it.
In my opinion, we can live according to our own willingness if we live alone. However, keeping our space clean and tidy is an important life skill. It is unfair (不公正的) to other family members if our room is messy as it is part of their home too, and we should respect that.

Passage 25
After waking up, you may feel frustrated that you cannot recall the dreams you had last night. Artificial Intelligence (AI) may be able to help.
Previously, there have been AI models that can turn texts into images. They do this by learning from a large amount of data from both texts and images. This time, researchers from Osaka University in Japan have trained an AI system called Stable Diffusion to recreate images directly from people’s brain scans, Science magazine reported.
The researchers used an online data set provided by the University of Minnesota, which consisted of brain scans from four participants (参与者) as they each viewed a set of 10,000 photos. The scans were recorded by functional magnetic resonance imaging (FMRI, 功能性磁共振成像).
The AI then learned about the participants’ brain activities by analyzing changes in blood flow shown by the FMRI data—when a part of the brain is activated (激活), more blood will flow to it. It then matched the brain activities with the photos. Through this method, AI learned how human brains would react when seeing different photos.
Finally, the researchers tested the AI on additional brain scans from the same participants when they viewed photos of a toy bear, airplane, clock and train. If the person looked at an airplane, for example, the AI would use the brain scan data to create an image of a very blurry (模糊的) airplane. Then, it would turn on the previous “text-to-image” model and improve the quality of the image by feeding itself the keyword “airplane”. The final images were “convincing” with about 80 percent of accuracy (准确性), according to the researchers.
The new study created a novel approach that combines texts and images to “decipher (解码) the brain”. According to Ariel Goldstein from Princeton University, US, told Science magazine. In the future, scientists hope that the technology can be used to record imagined thoughts and dreams or allow people to understand how differently other animals perceive (感知) reality.
Title Brain Scans by AI
Problem You can’t remember the dreams you had last night, which 151 you to feel frustrated.
Solution An AI system called Stable Diffusion recreates images 152 on people’s brain scans.

Step 1
Step 2
Step 3
Step 4
Step 5

Passage 2

Calligraphy is a creative art. The calligraphers create their works with the usage of the ink and the writing brush. The black strokes (笔画) and white space on the paper create a sense of beauty. For calligraphers, the writing brush is the extension (延伸) of their fingers: The rhythm (节奏) and strength of their writings are all controlled by their moods (情绪).
Calligraphy is an expressive art. In a work of calligraphy, we can see the character (性格), the education level and experiences of the calligrapher.
When calligraphy and painting are mentioned together, calligraphy always comes before painting. Ancient Chinese architecture (建筑) was also influenced by calligraphy. The development of Chinese handicrafts (手工艺) has been influenced by calligraphy as well. Thus we can see that calligraphy is the soul (灵魂) of Chinese fine arts.

Passage 16
You know that eating healthy, staying active, and working out a few brain games can help keep you intelligent.
