Many people are talking about the Panama Canal(巴拿马运河)these days. This canal is in the Republic of
Panama, but US President Donald Trump said that he wants to take control of the Panama Canal. Why does Trump want it so much
The Panama Canal is a man-made river. It cuts through Panama and joins the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The canal is about 81 kilometers long. Every year, around 14,000 ships travel through the canal. And it’s expensive! A ship may need to pay over 1,600,000 yuan to go through the canal once.
These ships carry over 200 million tons of goods(货物), making up five percent of global trade. More than two-thirds of these goods either come from the US or are going there. This might be a reason why Trump wants the canal.
But there is one thing to remember: The Panama Canal belongs to Panama, not any other country. It is the pride of the Panamanian people and a blessing for the world. Before the Panama Canal was built, ships had to take a long trip around the bottom of South America to go from one ocean to the other. The canal makes the trip shorter by more than 11,000 kilometers.

Li Shizhen, a well-known medical scientist of the Ming Dynasty, is recognized as a great master of medicine in China. He put his heart and soul into medicine, only to save the dying and cure(治愈)the sick.
Li was born in 1518 in Hubei. Both his grandfather and father were doctors. Li’s grandfather was a country doctor who travelled from place to place with a bag of herbs(草药). Such doctors were called Lingyi( bell doctors ),

We usually have a runny nose when catching a cold. Yet our parents tell us not to blow our nose so hard. Why is that
When we blow our nose very hard, the air can move from our nose to our ears and cause problems. When we have a cold, the tube that connects our nose to our ears gets smaller. So the air can’t go back to the nose and stays in the ear. This can hurt the eardrum(鼓膜)and might make our ears ring or even cause hearing loss. If the things from our nose go into our ears with viruses(病毒)and bacteria(细菌), it can cause ear infections(感染).
If the air from the nose goes into the eyes, it can make the pressure in the eyes go up. This might cause different eye problems and even affect how well we can see in the long run. This is why, sometimes, when you blow your nose too hard, both your eyes and ears may feel uncomfortable.
To clear your nose the right way, just close one nostril(鼻孔)at a time and softly blow. If your nose is blocked up, putting a warm towel on your nose and forehead(前额)can also help you feel better.
Since your nose and throat are connected, you can also try to get the mucus(粘液)out from your mouth. It’s a good idea to take a deep breath with the nose, then cough quickly to get out the mucus in your mouth.
33 .What will happen if you blow your nose too hard
A .You may become blind.
B .Your eyes may get an infection. C .You may get a hearing problem.
D .The pressure in your ear will go down.
34 .What is a good way to clean your nose

Why do we feel cold
In spring, some people wear T-shirts while others are in down coats. It seems that people feel different
temperatures on the same day.37 .
In fact, people don’t feel air temperature directly. There are sensors(传感器)on our skin that can feel cold, cool, warm, and hot temperatures. These sensors are also round in our noses and bodies.
When bodies are the same size, how much body fat we have can be different and influence how we feel
temperatures. The more body fat one has, the warmer he or she feels.38 . For example, old people often feel
colder than young people as the fat layer under the skin gets thinner with age.
39 . We need blood to move around our bodies to keep us warm. Since most people’s hearts are about
the same size, it takes more effort and time for the blood to move around in taller people. So taller people might feel colder.
Metabolism(新陈代谢)also influences how we feel temperatures.40 . People with a higher metabolism
always feel hotter than others. This is because they produce more heat and may take more time to cool down.
A .This is because the fat under the skin helps keep heat. B .For example, people with more muscles often feel warmer. C .Why does this happen D .It shows how fast our bodies use energy. E .Surprisingly, another reason is height.

Ten years ago, I made a decision. This decision has greatly changed the way I communicate with others, the way I spend my free time and what I research, although I did not know it at the time.
It wasn’t long after I bought my first smartphone(智能手机)that I began to notice that I couldn’t focus my attention on work all the time. I also noticed that smartphones didn’t just influence people at work. They competed for our attention when we spent time even with the closest people in our lives. A year after buying my smartphone, I decided that I was going to research whether smartphones influence happiness.
Since then, my partners and I have done a lot of experiments. We’ve found that friends with their phones on the table while eating enjoyed the experience less than those sharing a meal with their phones put away. In another study, parents asked to be on their phones while enjoying a science museum with their children found the experience less meaningful than parents asked to limit(限制)their phone use.
Based on these results, you might think I believe that smartphones are ruining(破坏)our lives. I’ve even had friends tell me that they are more self-conscious(自觉的)when they use their phones around me. The truth is that I neither hate my phone nor judge(评价)the way others use their phones.
However, I have to say that the research has influenced the way I use my phone. I usually put it on silent, so that I have more control over my attention. In fact, I would argue that my smartphone has improved my happiness. With it in my pocket wherever I go, I can save time when ordering my morning coffee, finding the best restaurant or doing my banking. What’s more, without my smartphone, I would not have met my husband.
