Some specialists doubt often using noise-cancelling headphones against background noise may h urt people' s hearing skills. Renee Almeida, an audiologi st(听力师) at a healthcare trust, has see n a rise in adults who visit her clinic with various hearing issues but tests suggest their heari ng is fine. The problemis with their brain, not their ears. They may fail to locate where a soun d is from, or follow a conversation with full attention.
The condition, known as auditory processing disorder(APD), is often found in children, making themstruggle to hear in classrooms or focus on a conversation. The rise in adults with similar
issues struck Almeida as strange. She doubts that the widespread use of noise- cancelling headphon es may cause ear infections(感染) and affect the process children learn to focus on sounds. For a dults, it may make their brain lazy processing sounds, j ust as muscles weaken without exercise. T here' s no scientific evidence that noise-cancelling headphones cause APD, but APD affects about 3% - 5%of school - aged children.
According to Harvey, a professor at the University of Manchester, listening experience affect s our ability to segregate background noise. Interrupting what is heard can be more problematic f or children than adults. If a child has repeated ear infections before age five, they’ ll find i t hard later to focus on sounds fromone direction. Surprisingly, many don' t catch up and need to learn the skill through training on apps such as Sound Storm.
Professor Dani at the University of Melbourne says people who use noise- cancelling headphones for long periods may find listening harder when they take themoff. But she says the benefits sh ould not be overlooked for managing sensory inputs. “ Instead of suggesting abandoning noise- ca ncel ling headphones, we need to stress the need for more comprehensive research studies,” she ad ds.
For now, Professor Dani recommends bone conduction(骨传导) headphones and hearing training. Sh e urges patients to listen to radio debates and to take down the lyrics of rap songs. “ There' s g reat bouncing ability in the brain. Make an effort to listen to what' s being said. ”

D. Leading to their lazy state of mind.
29. What does the underlined word“ segregate” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Strengthen. B. Separate. C. Access. D. Create.
30. Why does Professor Dani recommend listening to radio debates
A. It' s beneficial for people with perfect hearing.
B. It' s effective for children under the age of five.
C. It helps train the brain to better process and focus.
D. It' s for entertainment with no harmto hearing skills.
31. What is a suitable title for the text
A. APD Can Be Cured with Proper Exercise

A recent study about the smell of Egyptian mummies(木乃伊) reached some surprising findings.
The ancient bodies didn' t smell bad but mostly smelled good.
The researchers reported the leading descriptions of the smells as woody, spicy and flowery. That smell could be fromwhat was used in mummification, a process designed to protect the body f romdecay(腐烂) . The study used both chemical examinations and several human smell ers to study ni ne mummies at the Egyptian Museumin Cairo, some around 5,000 years old. The researchers studied the smell of mummies because it has long been a subj ect of interest for the public and researcher s. Scent, or smell, was an important consideration in the mummification process. This process use d oils and plant-based materials to protect the body.
As directly measuring the mummies might be damaging, researchers measured smells and other ef fects by using technical instruments to measure the atoms(原子) released into the air.
Matij a, a chemistry professor at the University of Lj ublj ana, said, “ It tells us potentially what social class a mummy was fromand reveals a lot of information about the mummified body. We believe that this approach is potentially of huge interest to other types of museumcollections, providing important data to better protect the ancient bodies for future generations. ”
Huber, a German expert not involved in the study, said that over thousands of years, differen t conditions have changed the scents of the mummies in a maj or way. He wrote a study two years ag o to identify the material used for preservation and what it would show about ancient trade paths. Researchers of the current study hope to do something similar. They want to use their findings to develop“ smellscapes” to recreate the scents they discovered. They also want to change the expe rience for future museum-goers.
Researcher Bembi bre said museums generally ask vi sitors to experi ence everythi ng with thei r eyes.
