Drawing inspiration from the Dallas-based Daddy Stroller Social Club (DSSC) – a support
network for fathers – Brandon Shaw composed an 83-page typewritten letter that was
addressed to his father. From the Blacklit bookstore, Kalvin Bridgewater led 15 dads in an
emotional event where the men dug into what they hated, loved, misunderstood and
appreciated about their fathers as they grew up.
Launched by Bridgewater in 2021, DSSC started with roughly 30 fathers attending each
gathering before surging in popularity following the viral success of two online videos in April
2024. Today, events regularly draw over 150 participants, fostering connections among dads as
they share parenting journeys and offer mutual emotional support.
DSSC s appeal is broad, attracting dads from various professions, including doctors,
engineers, and electricians. The group emphasizes emotional support, with members regularly
checking in on one another. As Shaw shared, the group provides a space where men can be
open, asking, “How are you feeling ” Shaw, who joined the group when he first became a
father, said it has made him more patient and understanding.
After earning certification as a birth doula (产妇陪护师) to better assist his wife through
pregnancy (孕期), Bridgewater now also leads workshops for fathers to ensure DSSC allows
mothers some time for themselves. At a May event held by DSSC, planned right before
Mother s Day, mothers were given a break while fathers spent time bonding with their children.
Brandon Shaw described the experience as transformative, saying it helped him connect
with his own weaknesses, something he had previously kept hidden. He sent the letter he wrote
to his father for Father s Day. It will arrive soon. He said he doesn t expect a response and just
hopes his father reads it. As Bridgewater puts it, fatherhood is just about “being honest and
sharing”.
24.What can we learn about DSSC from the first two paragraphs
A. It repairs broken father-son relationships.
B. It cares about fathers emotional well-being.
C. It makes a group of father popular online.
D. It stresses fathers contributions to parenting.
25.What leads to the popularity of DSSC
A. Diverse member backgrounds. B. Flexible meeting locations.
C. Professional instructions. D. Supportive atmosphere.
26. Why is the May event mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To stress the uniqueness of DSSC.
B. To illustrate another aim of DSSC.
C. To show an ideal husband-wife relationship.
D. To justify the founder s personal experience.
27. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. DSSC s influence on its members.
B. The severity of parental issues.
C. The necessity to identify weaknesses.
D. Bridgewater s devotion to fatherhood.

In the early 1900s, when pursuing one of his many projects, the French chemist and
inventor Edouard Benedictus invented shatterproof (防碎的) glass by chance, although its
importance wasn t recognized until issues emerged within the car market.
Such moments of serendipity reveal the unpredictable nature of innovation. Yet, even in
cases where chance plays a role, as in Benedictus s story, the broader question remains: Are
such discoveries truly born of luck, or were they somehow “in the air,” waiting for the right
person to seize them
Some argue all the discoveries would have been made by other people. They believe if the
time was ripe, someone would have got there. Independently, Charles Darwin and Alfred R.
Wallace (the latter 15 years behind Darwin) arrived at the theory of evolution by natural
selection, both counting on similar data. There existed slight differences in the theory, but the
coincidences of thought were astonishing. This phenomenon, which also exists in biological
evolution, is called convergence (趋同性) : two non-closely related species develop similar
functional adaptations. This is an important clue that can help explain why this pattern also
exists in scientific knowledge: Different research teams face similar pressures to find solutions,
driving them to pursue similar paths of inquiry.
If we analyze the steps that led to the result, we can see that there were in fact some
accidental elements. Yet is it really possible that all discoveries were “in the air”
All scientists are learning from those giants who have gone before them, and there is
objectively a cumulative (积累的) element in science. Nevertheless, at some point and in the
right circumstances, it was the unknown scientists, not the giants, who managed to see a little
farther. The mind of the giant was imprisoned by prior knowledge, the framework of established
habits, and established methods. The new, little-known scientist, on the other hand, will in one
way or another have been able to break free of the chains of established knowledge. Therefore,
it will be possible for them to imagine other worlds. This suggests that it will be innovators, with
28. In paragraph 2 “serendipity” refers to __________.
A. late recognition. B. accidental invention.
C. chemical innovation. D. emergence of problems. 29. The example of Darwin and Wallace is given to illustrate __________.
A. independent but similar solutions found by different people.
B. limited resources and technological difficulties in science.
C. the important role of similar data in scientific research.
D. fierce competition among scientists of different times.
30. What advantage might less-known scientists have over established researchers
A. Access to advanced tools. B. Greater funding opportunities.
C. Stronger peer cooperation. D. Freedom from rigid mindsets.
31. Which statement best reflects the main idea of the passage
A. All discoveries are sure results of technological progress.
B. Chance alone drives groundbreaking scientific achievements.
C. Traditional methods prevent innovation and should be abandoned.
D. Breakthroughs integrate accidental opportunities with prepared minds.

Precision agriculture represents a crucial advancement in contemporary farming.
One innovative application employs real-time imaging to visualize how tiny drops of liquid are
forming on plant surfaces. Different from conventional agriculture where farmers often rely on
general estimates and application of pesticides (杀虫剂) across the entire field, this technology
helps farmers maximize productivity while minimizing inputs.
This development originated from the work of Vishnu Jayaprakash, who had some family
exposure to the process of spraying (喷洒) crops and recognized that the main challenge in that
process is how to make water-based sprays interact effectively with surfaces of plants, which is
influenced by various factors including the design of the device, the temperature, wind and
other conditions at the time of spraying.
To effectively address this issue, Jayaprakash developed a two-camera system. It can be
connected to typical spraying equipment and use imaging of the spraying solution on the
target plants to determine what adjustments are needed. The system can be used to make
changes in order to get the spray coverage “just right.” This allows farmers to use only 20-
30% of the product per acre (英亩) while maintaining key functions like pest control, fertilization,
and growth regulation. The advancement in precision agriculture is helping farmers reduce
costs while maintaining crop protection.
Susan Scheufele, a researcher at the University of Massachusetts, has conducted field trials
with this technology on vegetable crops. In trials for removing cotton leaves, it has shown
positive results even when used at 50% of the minimum application rate that is recommended
on the product label.
The primary benefit of precision agriculture methods lies beyond cost savings. Despite the
fact that this technology still has a long way to go, its adoption ensures that chemical remains in
crops are well below harmful levels, safeguarding ecosystems and food safety.
32.Why is the real-time imaging technology adopted
{#{QQABKY694gAkIAgLQoMRQAcqAxiwBFAFIA=}#}
A. To check plant growth. B. To replace pesticide use.
C. To improve productivity. D. To increase the farmland.
33. How does Jayaprakash s two-camera system address the challenge
A. By choosing various spraying equipment.
B. By calculating the amount of pesticide required.
C. By making adjustments to enhance spray efficiency.
D. By using imaging to monitor the temperature and wind.
34. What can be the conclusion of Susan Scheufele s field trials
A. The technology is workable with less costs.
B. The technology is useless for removing leaves.
C. The technology is only suitable for some plants.
35.What is the author s attitude toward precision agriculture
A. Tolerant. B. Favourable. C. Disapproving. D. Dismissive.

In my family, Saturday always meant cleaning day. As soon as any child was able to use a
dust cloth, he or she was assigned a household chore. We had to complete our assigned chore
before school assignments. (36)
Keeping up with chores was just how our family functioned. We complained and tried to
avoid them. (37) As a family, we all had roles in keeping the home running smoothly,
and the responsibility grew with age. It made sense to us, as much as we disliked it.
When I was a kid, I knew when doing chores I was helping my family. It wasn t until I grew
into adulthood that I realized that chores are more than a list of tasks. (38) Being
assigned chores communicates that each family member is needed and that their action affects
every person living under the same roof.
Handling daily household chores is never easy, but doing them out of love for my family
makes it manageable. (39) I enjoy jumping in to help whenever my parents need a
hand. While working together, we have the chance to have meaningful conversations, share
experiences, and build memories.
(40) Household chores mean learning how to manage responsibility and
understand kids role, let alone practicing discipline, time management, and selflessness. All
these consequences would seem to tip the scales in favor of chores.
A. We never questioned why we did them, though.
B. Household chores were a source of happiness for us.
C. They bring about a sense of belonging within a family.
D. In effect, doing chores alongside my family is a great joy.
E. And the older we grew, the more my parents expected us to do.
F. Allowing children to share burdens helps them recognize their strengths.
G. It also comes as no surprise that chores are important for personal growth.

For twelve years, I had worked at the hospital. One day, they informed me that I was no
longer needed. I knew it was a cost-cutting measure to replace me with someone less
experienced and lower-paid, yet the pain of feeling useless remained.
When I was sad and worried about my future, a fellow health educator at another hospital
shared, “I ve just learned the most helpful tool. No matter what the situation is, there is an
opposite, a benefit. Our typical response is to focus on the losses of jobs, marriage, home, or
even health. Instead, we should concentrate on finding what we gained with our loss.”
At first, I resisted her advice. I was so focused on my job that I forgot my dream of
traveling around the world in a trailer (拖车) and all the things I wanted to do when I was busy. I
only yearned (渴望) to get my job back, missing my office, coworkers, and the routine, as well as
the meaningful challenges of organizing health education classes for sick people.
But as time went by, I grew tired of my sorrow and loneliness. I decided to try my friend s
advice and seek some opposites. The opposite of loneliness being friendship, I called Lucy, a
kind-hearted neighbor. I asked if she would like to take an exercise class with me and started to
develop a friendship with her. Soon, we became good friends, often going shopping together
and taking a walk every day.
Then one day, Lucy invited me to go to Mali, West Africa, to volunteer there. It was a poor
area where people lived in mud huts without modern conveniences. However, the villagers
seemed content.

were given a set time limit and a mystery basket of ingredients, they showcased
their excellent cooking skills, which created mouthwatering food from various
cultures ranging from Italian pasta to Chinese dumplings. The judges, including
professional chefs and food bloggers, evaluated each dish based on taste,
presentation, and creativity. In the end, the winning team received cookbooks as
prizes.
The competition was a resounding success, fostering cultural understanding
and teamwork among participants. Many students praised that it was a fun way to
learn about global cuisines and they were looking forward to next year’s
competition!

67. When volunteering there, I helped the villagers and also got helped. Lucy
and I had brought many soccer balls, pens, and clothes, expecting to help the
poor villagers. Meanwhile, I taught the local children basic hygiene (卫生)
knowledge and simple first-aid skills, hoping to improve their health awareness.
What I didn't expect was that the villagers, in turn, taught me so much more.
Some villagers showed us how to make simple but delicious local food with
limited ingredients, while a young man taught us their traditional dance, filling our
days with joy and laughter. Their warm-heartedness and positive attitude towards
life despite hardships deeply touched me, making me understand the true
meaning of contentment.

Returning home with a different perspective, I decided to make a change. I
realized that losing my job was not the end but a new beginning. I decided to fully
embrace my dream of traveling in a trailer. Lucy joined me, and together we
carefully planned our routes, eager to explore more unknown places and
experience different cultures. Along the way, I continued to volunteer in various
communities, sharing my medical knowledge. Every encounter with new people
and every place I visited broadened my horizons and enriched my soul. I also kept
in touch with the villagers in Mali, and our friendship transcended geographical
boundaries. My life, once filled with despair, was now brimming with hope and
contentment, all thanks to that fateful job loss and the journey of self-discovery
that followed. I finally understood that losing my job was not an end but a new
beginning, which led me to a life full of adventures, friendships, and self-
discovery.
