Chinese AI Model DeepSeek-R1 Stuns the World
January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This
smart program can solve math problems, write code, and answer questions like top models such as OpenAI’s
GPT-4o, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $5.58 million (1/70 of OpenAI’s cost) and used
2,048 computer chips for two months. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.
DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. Other AIs
need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. For example, in a global math test, it got 79.8% right,
slightly higher than OpenAI’s model. A simple version of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping
schools and small companies.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started
projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with it cost $10 instead of $300 with other AIs. Even
Meta (a famous U.S. tech company) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
U.S. tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts say China
is catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a “big step forward”, proving that smart ideas beat
expensive tools.
As a DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” With
R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.
47.What is the main purpose of the article
A.To compare Chinese and American AI technologies.
B.To introduce a low-cost AI model from China.
C.To explain how computer chips work.
D.To encourage students to become programmers.
48.How much did it cost to train DeepSeek-R1
A.$5.58 million. B.$65 billion. C.$10. D.$300.
49.What does the word “it” refer to in the sentence: “A German scientist said experiments with it cost $10...”
A.Meta. B.DeepSeek-R1. C.A computer chip. D.A math test.
50.Why does the engineer say, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use”
A.To criticize expensive AI models. B.To explain why R1 is free.
C.To compare R1 with Meta’s AI. D.To encourage students to study math.

other AIs.”
根据“DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change.”以及工程师所说的话,可推知工程师这么说

Energy is the ability to do work. Solar energy (太阳能) comes from the Sun. There is also energy that
comes from wind and water.
51 When you ride a bike, you produce energy. You use your legs to push the pedals. Your energy
is transferred (转移) to the bike. That makes the bike move.
Now imagine riding your bike to create enough power to run a computer. Some students at one school just
did that! They jumped on bikes connected to generators and pedaled in place. 52 This energy is needed
to run their computers.
Here is how bicycle-powered energy works. When a student pedals the bike, the back wheel spins (快速旋
转). The wheel spins the generator. The generator produces electricity. As long as a student pedals the bicycle,
53 The electricity can be used right away. This energy can also be kept and used later.
People use bicycle-powered energy to run small devices (设备) such as small televisions and fans. They
often use less than 100 watts per hour. However, it would be a mistake to use pedal power to run a fridge. 54
The electricity for these machines comes from power lines overhead or underground.
Pedal power can be seen in schools, gyms, and homes. 55
A.This large machine often uses more than 700 watts per hour.
B.Soon they were producing electricity.

The challenge that I faced
Challenges are unavoidable in our lives. The most unforgettable challenge I faced was to overcome the
difficulty of learning math.
I didn’t use to like math. I thought it was boring and difficult. I couldn’t concentrate whenever I dealt with
math problems. Although math was truly a headache for me, I knew I had to learn it well. I knew attitude played a
very important role in learning a subject well. So I made up my mind to find the interests in math and finally I
found that math was closely related to our lives. As long as I do more practice, the math problems are not so
difficult as they used to be.
From this experience, I realize that nothing is impossible unless we give up. I feel lucky that I chose to face
the challenge bravely and finally overcame the difficulty.

D.To encourage students to study math.

C.electricity moves through the generator.
