Does it really matter if we know how old animals are To many scientists, it does.
When studying animal populations, it is of great importance to scientists to know how many animals there are
and how old they are. This information can help scientists learn which animals are thriving (茁壮的) and which
ones need more care and help. Scientists usually use the following ways to tell animals’ age.
For many animals, their teeth can help scientists know their age. In some animals, some teeth don’t come in
until a certain age. Take cows for example. Like humans, cows have two sets of teeth, milk teeth and permanent (永
恒的) teeth. They normally get their first pair of permanent teeth when they’re two years old. Then they have the
next pair at the age of three, the third pair at the age of four...
Hair and skin can also provide information about age. Some animals tend to get bad skin and gray hair as they
get older. If you have an older dog, you may have noticed that its nose and mouth get grayer as it gets older.
Animals’ eyes and ears might also help scientists tell animals’ age. As animals get older, their hearing often
becomes weak and their eyesight might begin to fail.
Scientists are continuing to discover new and more ways of telling the age of animals. Recently, scientists
have learned that ▲ . That’s really good news!

Sperm whales (抹香鲸) live in every ocean on the planet. How much do you know about them
They have the biggest brain on Earth. Human brains weigh about 1.4 kilograms, but a sperm whale’s brain can
weigh up to 9 kilograms! They are clever sea animals.
They are the loudest animals alive. Their high-pitched clicks (声调高的咔哒声) are louder than planes and
allow sperm whales to send information to one another from hundreds of kilometers away. In addition, these clicks
are special to each whale. Scientists believe this is how sperm whales recognize (辨认出) one another.
They sleep vertically (垂直地). Sperm whales sleep in a vertical position near the surface of the water. This
allows sperm whales to sleep for shorter periods of time. In fact, scientists found that they sleep for less than two
hours each day.
They produce something that is worth as much as gold. Ambergris (龙涎香) is an amazing thing that forms in
the stomach of a sperm whale. Ambergris is thought to protect the whale from the sharp things that it eats. Sperm
whales release (释放) ambergris into the sea as a sweet-smelling, egg-shaped ball. Because ambergris is often used
in fine perfumes (香料), a kilogram of it can sell for up to $50, 000. This makes ambergris one of the most valuable
objects on Earth!
Sperm whales are amazing animals on Earth!
28. Sperm whales use their shapes to recognize each other.
29. Sperm whales might sleep in the ocean by lying near the surface of the ocean.
30. Ambergris can protect the whale from something sharp in their food.

Every year, wildfires destroy much forest land. Homes are broken down, and thousands of people die.
Smoke-jumpers are helping to stop this.
Smoke-jumpers are a special kind of firefighter. They jump from planes into areas that are difficult to reach by
car or on foot, like the middle of a mountain forest. The idea of jumping out of planes to fight wildfires first came
up in the 1930s and became popular in the 1940s.
At a fire site, smoke-jumpers first examine the land and decide how to fight the fire. Their main goal is to stop
fire from spreading. Using basic tools such as shovels and axes, smoke-jumpers clear land of burnable material like
plants and other dry material. They carry water with them too, but not much.
Although most smoke-jumpers are men, more women are joining. Most important are your weight and height.
Smoke-jumpers in the U. S., for example, must be 54 to 91 kilograms, so they don’t get hurt when they land, or get
blown by strong winds.
Smoke-jumpers must be able to live in the wilderness (荒野). In Russia, many smoke-jumpers know how to
find food in the forest and even make simple furniture (家具) from trees.
The work is dangerous, and the hours are long. But for these firefighters, smoke-jumpers isn’t just a job. They
love being able to jump out of planes, fight fires, and live in the forest. As 28-year-old Russian smoke-jumpers
Alex Smith says, “This is the best job for the strong and brave people.”

Volunteering is a good way to spend our free time. Last winter, I took part in a meaningful activity to help
clean up a community park. We picked up litter, swept fallen leaves and planted young trees. Though it was tiring,
seeing the park become tidy filled me with joy.
From this experience, I learned that even small actions can make a big difference. The smiles from neighbors
taught me the value of teamwork and kindness. Most importantly, I felt deep satisfaction by contributing to society.
Volunteering is not just giving help—it also helps us grow.
