Passage 1
阅读下面的短文,根据短文回答问题。
When we talk about a “leaning tower (斜塔)”, most people will first think of the famous
Tower of Pisa. Now the government tries to save it. However, the Garisenda tower in Bologna,
Italy, is another well-known Italian leaning tower. It may fall down.
The Garisenda tower began to lean in the early 14th century. It’s leaning at a four-degree
angle (角度) now, while the Tower of Pisa leans at five degrees. According to CNN, the lean of
the tower changed by 90 degrees, from an easterly or southeasterly direction (方向) to the south.
But that’s not all. The rocks at the base (基底) and the bricks (砖块) of the tower are breaking into
(破碎) smaller parts.
The city is making a plan to save the tower now. One of the steps (步骤) in helping it is to
make a “cage” for it because the “cage” can stop any danger to people nearby.

When it comes to Confucius. How would you describe him This seems an easy question,
but one of his students found it difficult. Why You can find an answer from The Analects of
Confucius.
“What kind of person is your teacher ” Chongyu, one of Confucius’ students, couldn’t say
a word. Confucius answered the question himself. In his words, he studied so hard that he forgot
to eat. He was happy looking for truth and virtue (美德) and even forgot his worries because of
this. And he didn’t feel he was aging at all. Such a teacher is special. It’s no wonder Chongyu
couldn’t describe him in just a few words.
Confucius’ words make us think about the meaning of learning. You might take classes, do
homework and take exams day after day. It might be difficult for you to say that learning is
enjoyable. But it was fun for Confucius and he was happy to keep learning.
Why, because he believed that study could bring him joy from looking for the truth of all
things in the world. He kept trying and let nothing stop him, believing this could help him become
a better person. It even reached the point where he forgot about his desire and the passing of his
life. Perhaps we, too, can find a reason to let nothing stop us from learning or imagining the
person we want to become in the future. Then we may also enjoy learning.
1. Why couldn’t Chongyu describe Confucius in just a few words
2. What do Confucius’ words in the passage make us think about

4. What is Confucius like according to the passage (Give an example.)

because he was too thin. This made Dale feel very sad and bad about himself.
His mother was worried it might hold him back. She told Dale to join a public speaking (公
共演讲) club. She thought speaking in front of people would help him feel more confident.
The words he used, his voice and how he talked to the people helped him believe more in
himself little by little. His first success (成功) in the club made him very happy. Over time Dale
became the best at public speaking in his school and won many prizes.

Passage 13
Who do you think are the heroes in our lives Maybe doctors, policemen, firemen and
so on. Besides (除了) them, I think the people who clean up our trash (垃圾) are also great
heroes. Thanks to them, our living areas are ▲ .
My name is Thomas Dambo. I’m a “trash artist” and work with these heroes. My job is
to create (创造) beauty out of trash. By doing this, I want to show people that trash is not all
ugly (丑陋的) or smells bad. We can collect it and use it to make something beautiful and
useful.
About two months ago, I started an activity called “The Future Forest”. More than 700
students, 100 volunteers and many landfill (垃圾填埋场) workers joined in it. Together we
collected three tons of plastic waste. Then, we turned it into a colourful plastic forest in Mexico
City.
This 500-square-metre forest is full of thousands of plastic flowers, trees and animals.
Children can come to my workshop (工作室) to build new plants and animals for the forest. In
this way, the forest will keep growing. “The Future Forest” is now on display (展览). People
can visit it for the next few months.
If you keep looking, there’s beauty behind the trash. Let’s learn to reuse it better and
build a brighter future for the world!

According to a survey, there is one autistic kid (自闭症儿童) in every 54 children. Autism
influences (影响) the way children feel and hear, and how they see the world. They need much
help in daily lives.
A special helper came to Mendip School, a school for autistic students in England, in late
June, 2021. It’s a friendly robot called Pepper. Pepper joined the students between 12 and 19 years
old at the school for three weeks.
Every time Pepper met students in the school’s hallway, the robot said hello and asked them
how they felt. Pepper could do a lot of things like dancing and telling stories. “Because of Pepper,
there was a lot of dancing in school. And children loved the robot’s jokes,” said a teacher called
Conley. “Some children didn’t like to talk or play with others in the past. But now, it’s not so
difficult for them to start up new friendships with others.”
Using robots to help autistic children is not new. However, most robots only teach skills (技
能) to children. That’s not what autistic children really need. Pepper is different. It works to get
autistic children happy.
