Little George lived in a poor village. One summer day George’s mother sent him to the field to pick up some
dry wood for the fire.
George looked very hard. By the time the sun was high, he was very hot and wished for a cool place to rest
and have some food. As he walked along, he found some shade, and by it were some fine, wild strawberries.
“How good these will be with my bread and butter,” thought George. He picked up all of the strawberries. As
he was lifting the first strawberry to his mouth, he remembered his sick mother, alone in her dark, cold room in the
village.
With this in mind, he put the strawberry back again. “Shall I save them for her ” he asked himself. He thought
how refreshing they would be for her, yet was still looking at them with a longing eye.
“I will eat half, and take the other half to her,” he said. He divided them into two heaps (堆), but each heap
looked so small. He put them together again. “I will only eat one,” he thought. But, as he again lifted it to his mouth,
he saw that he had taken the best, and he put it back. When the sun was beginning to sink (下沉), George set out for
home. How happy he felt that he had all his strawberries for his sick mother.
He heard his mother’s weak voice calling him. “Is that you, George I am glad you have come back. I am

Have you ever wondered why some friendships feel as close as family It turns out that genetics (遗传学)
might have a hand in choosing your closest friends.
According to a US study with 1,932 people, friends have a kinship coefficient (a way to show genetic
connection) that is 0.0014 higher than in strangers! The kinship coefficient is an easy way to see how genetically
related (相关的) two people are—the higher the number, the closer the relation.
Don’t look down on this number. The kinship coefficient between parents and children is about 0.25. For first
cousins, it’s about 0.0625, while for fourth cousins, it’s around only 0.001. This means you might share more genes
(基因) with your best friend than with some distant (遥远的) family members.
The question is—why are people with a high level of kinship coefficient more likely to become friends The
research team found that many of the top one percent of similar genes are related to the sense of smell. This means
that close friends may have a similar sense of smell.
A study in Science Advances also showed that people who become close friends usually have similar body
smells. Researchers collected sweat samples (汗液样本) from 20 pairs of friends. They all became close in a short
time. Using an e-nose and human volunteers to study the smells, they found that friends’ body odors (体味) were
more alike than those of strangers. So, next time you hug your friends, you might notice that they smell a bit like
you!
31. What can the kinship coefficient show
A. Whether two people are genetically related.
B. How much two friends have in common.
C. How close the genetic relation between two people is.
D. How long it takes for two strangers to become friends.
32. What can we learn from Paragraph 3
A. Our best friend might be a distant family member.
B. The kinship coefficient between two friends is 0.001.
C. Best friends have a higher kinship coefficient than first cousins.
D. Best friends may share more genetic similarities than distant relat ves.
33. What kind of people are more likely to become friends
A People of similar body shapes. B. People with similar body smells.
C. People enjoying the same hobbies. D. People sharing the same interests.
34. What is the structure of the passage
A. B. C. D.
35. What is the text mainly about
A. What gets people closer. B. When people need family.
C. Why people make friends. D. How friends are different from family.
D

what you want to achieve, it helps you keep going in the right direction and take responsibility for your goals. It’s

what you’ve written compared to just thinking about it. Believe it or not, writing down your goals can even help
you stay focused on what you want to achieve. The more focused you are, the better your chances of reaching your
goal.
Every great journey begins with a single step—and your pen is the compass for this adventure. When dreams
take shape on paper, they transform from fleeting (短暂的) thoughts into living promises to yourself. ____40____
And your future self will thank you.
A. Writing your goals down also helps you remember them better.

My Favorite Workshop Activity
To relax after class, I joined the pottery group in our Campus Creative Workshop. At first, shaping clay felt
challenging, but the teacher taught me to focus on every gentle touch.
Through this activity, I’ve learned that creating art requires both patience and creativity. When my first clay
cup was baked successfully, I felt proud of turning an idea into reality. What’s more, working with classmates
taught me the importance of sharing tools and ideas.
I suggest adding more activities like 3D printing or gardening. Let’s make the workshop a place where hands
and minds grow together!
