Jared was my regular hiking, ice-climbing and mountain-biking fellow. We were on an overnight trip, just a single night, and what he’d brought for dinner was this: Rice. Literally nothing else.
This was not a result of him trying to pack as light as possible, nor was it because he was broke. He wasn’t. I tried to convince him to at least put soy sauce (酱油) on it. But no, Jared wasn’t having a bar of it. “I don’t need it,” he said flatly.
Now, if he was talking only about outdoors’ meals, I’d almost get it. When you’re ravenous after a day of burning off calories walking or climbing or backcountry skiing in the mountains, how awesome do things taste! I know what you’re thinking; it’s simply that, as the saying goes, hunger is the best sauce. And I agree. Absolutely.
But there’s more to it than that. Last month, I went down the coast car camping with my family. One morning, my wife made a statement. “I don’t see the point,” she said. “It’s so much work, camping. But the views at home are better. The beds are more comfortable. It’s more peaceful. And at home, the food is better.” I’ll admit she’s right about the first three. But the food We had a simple pasta one night, snags another, chicken curry the third, but they all tasted good. Better than at home. And it wasn’t simply that we were hungry; it was because we were camping.
The real point I want to get to is that meals largely taste so good when I’m camping because I’m reminded of some things easily forgotten at home, where I can simply go to the cupboard, or the supermarket, and get whatever takes my fancy. Life, when you’re camping, is reduced to its essentials, and I am reminded of how lucky most of us are to be dry and warm and fed. More importantly, I am reminded that sadly, and in fact unforgivably, not all of us are. And I am reminded that we, as a society, should do better for them.

Our future selves used to be a riddle. Now, thanks to social media filters (滤镜), we can stare them right in the face. People fell in love with TikTok this month to share themselves “aging” in real time using a filter “Time Travel”. Set to a sad song, the effect shows the user’s face slowly getting older, complete with wrinkles and sunspots.
Camera filters that age you have been around for years. But advancements in AI are making the results more real. Doctor Aleksandra Brown said the TikTok “Time Travel” filter does well in guessing how a given face would age.
As we get older, our facial skin thins, fat dissolves (溶解) and gravity pulls everything downward. Not everyone is pleased about this. One of Brown’s friends didn’t like watching time fly past. She couldn’t stand watching herself age 50 years in 15 seconds—could life really go by that fast Brown cried herself after using the aging effect on her own young daughter. She won’t live to see her daughter get that old, she pointed out.
For other people, the “Time Travel” filter brought up unexpected positive feelings. Actor Jonathan Bennett shared a video saying his own filtered face recalled happy memories of his late father. Nicole Loehle, a 24-year-old in New Jersey, tested the effect with her boyfriend. It gave her a new viewpoint, she said, she could imagine the relationship lasting into their old age.
There’s no correct way to age. But it’s important to remember that no one can stop time or undo its effects. “I keep trying to view aging as a gift,” Brown said. “Some people don’t get to age, unluckily.”

In science fiction movies such as 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien, or Passengers, crew members are put into a state of sleep to take year-long journeys to space. Now a new study from Washington University has shown that human hibernation (冬眠) may soon become a reality.
The research team carried out tests on rats—animals that do not naturally hibernate. They first identified a group of neurons (神经元) in a deep brain region, which were found to be involved in controlling body temperature during hibernation. They showed that, in mice, these neurons could be stimulated using ultrasound (超声波), which was delivered through a helmet without causing an injury.
When receiving the ultrasound, the mice showed a drop in body temperature of about 3℃, and their heart rates fell by about 47%. When the ultrasound system was switched off, they woke up again. The result was "surprising and fascinating", said Hong Chen, a professor who led the work.
Researchers are also trying to determine how to employ the power of hibernation to help humans. They believe that it could be key to addressing health conditions like heart disease, and Alzheimer's. Furthermore, hibernation's ability to slow aging, which was observed in bats, could benefit space exploration, enabling longer missions with less food requirements. Research in animals also suggests that bodies of hibernating astronauts might lose less bone and muscle, making them fit and ready to start challenging exploration soon after they wake up.
The scientists now plan to look at how lowered body temperature might affect the cognitive (认知的) abilities of humans. "Our next experiments will test working memory in monkeys. This is important because while astronauts physically hibernate as they fly into deep space, their brain still needs to be working," said Chen.
12.Why are the movies mentioned in the first paragraph
A.To highlight the creativity of filmmakers.
B.To introduce the topic of human habitation.
C.To show the popularity of science fiction movies.
D.To explain the impact of movies on scientific research.
13.How did researchers make the mice hibernate
A.By pausing their heartbeats.
B.By simulating their brain neurons.
C.By making them sleep with helmets.
D.By exposing them to low temperature.
14.How might hibernation benefit humans according to the text
A.People might no longer suffer from diseases.
B.People might stay young as long as they wish.
C.Average people might be able to travel to space.
D.Astronauts might remain in space for a longer period.
15.What does the author mainly intend to tell us in the last paragraph
A.It is extremely challenging to be an astronaut.
B.There is always a gap between fiction and reality.
C.The hibernation experiment is far from complete.
D.The hibernation experiment remains to be tested on astronauts.

Mrs. Thompson, a retired teacher, was well-known for her insightful advice and genuine willingness to help others. Many high school students often turned to her for guidance and as her neighbor, me included.
One afternoon, feeling troubled and uncertain about my future after a disappointing exam,I decided to knock on Mrs. Thompson’s door.
“I don’t know what I’m doing with my life,” I admitted, my eyes fixed on the floor.“It feels like everyone else has it all figured out, and I’m just stuck.“ My voice trembled with sadness and a hint of fear.
I had bombed my last math test, and it felt like that failure stayed in every corner of my mind, increasing my anxiety about college examination and what I might want to pursue. While my friends seemed to advance effortlessly through their studies, I was struggling to stay afloat. The feeling that I was falling behind only deepened my sense of hopelessness.
Mrs. Thompson listened carefully, her face a picture of calm and understanding. Without saying much, she handed me a small tomato seedling (苗) in a pot. The tiny plant, with its delicate green leaves, seemed to symbolize a slight sign of hope.
”Let’s plant this in the garden,“ she said gently. “Water it every day and make sure it gets enough sunlight. But for a whole week, don’t focus on its progress. Just trust that it’s growing.”
Every day, I faithfully watered the little seedling, as if I was putting my own hopes into it.I carefully ensured it got the right amount of sunlight, positioning it just so under the sun’s rays. With great self-control, I resisted the urge to examine it too closely. As the days went by, I felt a mix of eagerness and impatience, like a child waiting for a long-promised gift, longing to see some sign that my efforts were making a difference.

56.【答案】Dear Thomas,
I’m writing to share an amazing activity, Transform Waste into Treasure, which I participated in last week.
For my work, I collected some used plastic bottles and old newspapers. After cutting the plastic bottles into various shapes, I rolled the newspapers into sticks to connect the plastic parts and added some colorful markers and small decorations. Then a unique wind chime was born, making pleasant sounds and creating a beautiful sight when the wind blows.
This activity was truly rewarding. It enhanced my creativity and practical skills and deepened my understanding of environmental protection. Transforming waste into something useful made me realize every effort counts in protecting our planet.
Have you ever participated in any school activities
Yours,
Li Hua
57.【答案】“Let’s go to check on the plant,” Mrs. Thompson said to me a week later. With a heart full of anticipation, I followed her to the garden. When we reached the spot where we’d planted the seedling, I was amazed. The once - tiny plant had grown significantly. Its leaves were greener and more robust, and it stood taller, reaching towards the sky. Mrs. Thompson looked at me and smiled, “You see, just like this seedling, growth doesn’t always happen at a speed we can immediately notice. Your efforts in studying are like the care you gave this plant. They’re working, even if you can’t see the results right away.”
One day, as I bent down to water it, a tiny yellow flower caught my eye. A sense of joy and accomplishment washed over me. That little flower was a symbol of hope and proof that my care had paid off. It made me realize that just as the seedling needed time and consistent care to bloom, so did I in my studies. I no longer felt as lost or hopeless. From then on, I faced my study challenges with newfound confidence, knowing that with perseverance, my efforts would surely lead to beautiful “blooms” in my future.
