People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas. ▲ It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.
The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was

something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn’t food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves.
Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.
The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens’ feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.

to her, and we rested in silence.
We had not sat long before another person came in. Some heavy clouds, swept from the sky by a rising wind, had left the moon bright, and her light, coming in through a window near, shone full both on us and on the coming person, Miss Temple.
“I came on purpose to find you, Jane Eyre,” said she. “I want you in my room, and as Helen Burns is with you, she may come too.”
We followed Miss Temple to her apartment. It had a good fire, and looked cheerful. Miss Temple told Helen Burns to be seated in a low arm-chair on one side of the fireplace, and herself taking another, she called me to her side.
“Is it all over ” she asked, looking down at my face. “Have you cried your sadness away ”
“I am afraid I never shall do that.”
“Why ”
“Because I have been wrongly accused(指责), and you and everybody else, will now think me a bad girl.”
“We shall think you what you prove yourself to be, my child. Continue to act as a good girl, and you will satisfy us.”
“Shall I, Miss Temple ”
“You will.” said Miss Temple, “You have been accused of lying when you were little. Tell us the truth, but add nothing and exaggerate(夸大)nothing.”
I made up my mind that I would be most modest and most correct. Having thought for a few minutes about where to start, I told her all the story of my sad childhood.
—Adapted from Jane Eyre

The widespread sedentary(久 坐不动 的)lifestyle has become a problem in America, fueling the rising obesity(肥胖) rate.
Now a new study finds that being surrounded(围绕)by active friends can help a person living a sedentary lifestyle get more exercise each day. Researchers at the US Military Academy found that people in social groups where exercise is valued are more likely to be more active themselves. Lonely people are more likely to live sedentary lifestyles without another person around to give them a boost. The findings highlight the idea that the company (社交 圈)a person keeps can be a boost to their overall health and direction in life.
Dr. Diana Thomas, a professor at a military school and study author said that the idea for the research came from real life experiences on the campus. Her team had noticed a trend (趋 势)of people becoming more interested in fitness and other activities once arriving at the school. This is not usually the case at other schools and workplaces, where there is no significant impact on fitness. Thomas believed that this trend could be the result of in-group social conditioning, where people will take part in activities that others around them are doing.
People whose data were gathered for the study were split into three groups based on their physical activity level—sedentary, moderately and extremely active. Moderately active folks were the most important for drawing people who are sedentary to become active, and to sustain that activity. Thomas explained that sedentary people would be unlikely to change their behavior when placed in a group of the extremely active, as it would seem unattainable (难以 达到的).
34. Why does the author mention the rising obesity rate in Paragraph 1
A. To make comparisons. B. To introduce the topic.
C. To support the argument. D. To provide examples.
35. What helps a sedentary person become active
A. Volunteering in social groups.
B. Working in a caring company.
C. Joining sports-loving friends.
D. Giving a lonely neighbor a boost.
36. The underlined word “boost” in Paragraph 2 means “______” .
A. Improvement B. Encouragement C. Practice D. Memory
37. Why are extremely active people less influential according to Dr. Thomas
A. They have no appeal for (呼吁) sedentary people.
B. They are unwilling to involve sedentary people.
C. They themselves often fail to keep exercising.
D. They seem like an example beyond sedentary people.

)As many pet owners know, pets can make a person’s day bright
and even provide comfort in difficult times. Now a survey has shown that owning pets is good for our mental(心理的)health. More than 2,000 American adults took part in the survey. Of these adults, 72% said they had pets. Dogs were the most common type of animal, followed by cats.
Among pet owners, 84% said their pets had mostly good influence on their mental health. About 64% said their pets provided unconditional love and support, while 62% said their pets provided a calming presence(在场)and lowered stress and anxiety(焦虑). Dog and cat owners were especially likely to say their pets were good for their mental health.
“We see the powerful relationship between people and their animals,” said Rena Carlson, president of the AVMA. “From offering presence and love to lowering stress and anxiety, pets can give us comfort and support.”
A recent study by researchers in Australia got the same result. It found that having a dog led children to be more active because they walked and played with their pets. Girls who had a dog exercised 52 more minutes per day than those who didn’t.
However, pets can also cause anxiety to owners, especially when it comes to the animals’ health. More than half of pet owners were worried about their pets having health problems, growing older, or passing away. Many people also tried their best to arrange(安 排)pet care when they travelled.
