It was a Saturday afternoon, and Lily sat by herself at home. Her friends were at the park, laughing, taking
photos, and sharing them on social media (社交媒体). As she looked at their posts, a wave of loneliness washed
over her. They seemed so happy together.
She put down her phone, disappointment filling her heart. “I’m not part of their group anymore,” she thought,
the weight of sadness pressing down on her. She wanted to go outside, but she didn’t know where to start. Her
thoughts were a mess.
Just then, her phone lit up. It was a message from Sarah, her best friend: “Hey, Lily! Are you coming to the
park We miss you!”
Lily stared at the screen for a while. She didn’t want to seem needy, but she also felt left out. Finally, she
typed back, “I’m fine. Don’t worry about me. You’re having fun without me anyway.”
A few minutes later, Sarah replied: “Lily, I know something’s wrong. You don’t have to hide it. If you don’t
want to come, that’s okay. But I’m here for you. Just let me know if you need anything.”
Lily felt a mix of sadness and comfort. She hadn’t realized how much she missed Sarah and their friendship.
For a moment, she thought about ignoring(忽略) the message. But then, she realized that Sarah truly cared about
her.
Lily quickly typed: “Sorry, Sarah. I didn’t mean that. I’ll come to the park now.”
When Lily arrived at the park, her friends welcomed her with big smiles. “We weren’t sure if you’d be free,
so we didn’t ask earlier. But we really wanted you to come.” Sarah said and gave her a warm hug. The others
joined in, offering her snacks and making space for her to sit. Lily felt warm and comfort as she realized that her
sadness came from keeping her feelings inside. That day, Lily promised herself to always trust her friends and

Sometimes he would drive me to school in his old truck. It was older than he was. You could hear it coming
from blocks away. On the way, I would shrink down into the seat hoping to disappear. He would pull right up in
front of the school. Then he would give me a big kiss on the cheek. It was making me feel uncomfortable!
One day I decided I was too old for a goodbye kiss. When we got to school, he had his usual big smile. He
started to lean to me, but I put my hand up and said, “No, Dad.” It was the first time I had ever talked to him that
way. “Dad, I’m too old for a goodbye kiss.”
My dad looked at me for the longest time, and his eyes started to tear up. I had never seen him cry. He turned
and looked out. “You’re right,” he said, “You are a big boy ... a man.” It wasn’t long before my dad went to sea and
never came back. It was the day when most of the boats stayed in, but not dad.
I wish that my dad would give me just one more kiss ... to feel his old face ... to smell the sea on him.
I wish I had been a man then. If I had been a man, I would never have told my dad I was too old for a
goodbye kiss.

Have you ever looked up at the night sky and wanted to know about the universe Now you can explore it
from your living room with CCTV’s exciting show, Free Talks on Astronomy (天文学)!
In November 2024, CCTV brought out a TV show called Free Talks on Astronomy. It looks at exciting
discoveries about the universe, such as space, the sun, the moon, and the solar system. This show doesn’t use hard
science words. So it’s easy and fun for children to understand. It also brings famous scientists from history back to
life, like Chinese scientist Luoxia Hong and Western astronomer Ptolemy, showing their important work in
astronomy.
Director Li Jinwei says he chose ideas and stories carefully to keep the show both good for learning and fun
to watch. The TV show has six parts. Every part of the show goes for only 20 minutes—not too long so you won’t
get bored, but enough time to teach you useful things. The team uses colorful photos and real videos from space to
help you understand difficult ideas better.
“At first, we covered simple topics like the moon and the sun. Later we wanted to talk about popular but
difficult ideas like black holes and the Big Bang. Many people have heard these words but don’t really understand
them.” said Director Li Jinwei. For students who have already known these difficult ideas and want to know more,
this TV show is an excellent choice. It helps them move from “knowing a little” to “understanding more”.
No matter if you’ve always liked space or are just beginning to ask questions about the stars, this show will
help you see how truly special our universe is.

You can travel alone, with friends, or with a tour group. They all have strong points and weak points.
The best thing about traveling alone is that you can do what you want to do. No waiting around in places you
are’t interested in, no missing a bus because your friend was late, etc. Your experience will be greatly improved by
traveling alone. The main worry is loneliness, but it’s not difficult to talk to and meet people. Just remember
everyone wants to meet new people, have fun and be friendly! However, there’s a safety problem in some countries,
especially for women traveling alone. You should always check the Foreign Office of your country for advice on
safety. Buying a personal alarm (警报装置) is a good idea for women traveling alone.
Traveling with a friend does sound nice, but it depends on how well you get on. If you have similar interests
or travel ideas, it should be wonderful. You will find it much cheaper to cook food in developed countries and share
a room. However, a lot of people I meet traveling together don’t seem to be having as much fun and often go their
separate (各自的) ways.
Tours are great when they go well. Some of my best memories (记忆) have been with tour groups. The key
there is when they go well. A terrible tour guide, quiet group and terrible food can ruin (毁掉) your time. My
advice would be never to do a tour that is too long except in countries with safety problems or poor transport.
All in all, traveling alone is the best, but it is good to mix it up. Invite a friend from home to meet you for a
few weeks. Try a tour group or two-some people love them-perhaps start with a day tour.
1.What should a woman do if she wants to travel alone
A.Get an alarm. B.Don’t be late. C.Don’t talk to strangers. D.Check the weather.

better understand the local lifestyle. “Students who wish to learn more about foreign cultures or to get foreign
experience should join this kind of holiday. I am sure you won’t be disappointed.” said a teacher during a school
meeting last term.
After this special meeting, I always thought about this kind of holiday. Last month, I had a chance at last to
go on such a holiday with some of my schoolmates and we went to London, a place where I had wanted to go since
years ago. As we were still young, we had a group leader who planned things for us and looked after us. After we

couple who had a daughter about my age. They treated me as a daughter of their family during my stay there. They
were interested in me and I learnt a lot of things from them, too.
The holiday was filled with activities every day. After breakfast, a local teacher would come to take us in his
car. Then we would have classes or go on a sightseeing trip to different places of interest like the Big Ben, the
London Bridge, and the Buckingham Palace. We would go back to our own homes after the activities.

Have you always wanted to learn an instrument (乐器), or return to one you used to play Would you like to
introduce your friends to instrument lessons and help them start building a lifetime of music In many cultures,
music is an important part of people’s ways of life, as it plays a key role in social and cultural activities. People
may make music as a hobby, like a teenager playing the violin in a youth orchestra (管弦乐队) or work as a
professional musician or singer.
But why is music so important That may be because music can train children’s brains. Every time you listen
to a piece of music, you’re actually giving yourself a deep and full-brain workout. If the brain is a muscle (肌肉)
then learning to play an instrument and read music is the basic exercise. Two new studies show that music training
can change both the brain’s white matter (白质), which carries signals through the brain, and grey matter (灰质),
which covers most of the brain’s neurons (神经元) that are active in processing information.
Another reason is that one can get the joy of learning to play an instrument later in life. People of any age
can learn to play and get a level of satisfaction. More people in their 50s and 60s are finding that taking up a
musical instrument or singing improves their lives in many ways. Music education can provide more than just
learning how to sing or play an instrument. It can also provide different skills that people may need for success in a
job outside of music. So forget apps and learn a musical instrument to train your brain now!

Nowadays, with the rapid development of modern society, people are facing more and more pressure. Many
health problems, such as stress-related disorders and a lack of physical fitness, are becoming increasingly common.
In response to these matters, nature-based therapy (治疗) has come out as a promising solution.
Nature-based therapy involves various activities carried out in natural environments. For example, forest
bathing is a popular form. During forest bathing, people slowly walk through the forest, breathing in the fresh air
and taking in the sights, sounds, and smells of nature. Research has shown that this simple activity can have
remarkable effects on both physical and mental health. It can lower blood pressure, reduce stress hormones in the
body, and improve mood.
Another form of nature-based therapy is gardening. When people engage in gardening, they not only get
physical exercise from activities like digging, planting, and watering, but also experience a sense of achievement
and connection with nature. Tending to plants can be a very relaxing and rewarding process. Watching a small seed
grow into a flourishing plant can bring a great deal of joy and a feeling of fulfillment.
Nature-based therapy is also beneficial for mental health. In nature, away from the hustle and bustle of the
city, people can find peace and quiet. The natural beauty and the rhythm of the natural world can calm the mind.
For those suffering from anxiety or depression, spending time in nature can provide a much-needed escape and a
chance to reset their mental state.

However, like any form of therapy. carrying out nature-based therapy on a large scale also faces some things.
For example, a display description might try to discover the challenges. One challenge is ensuring that everyone
has access to suitable natural spaces. Not all areas have convenient forests, parks, or gardens. Another challenge is
educating people about the benefits of nature based therapy and encouraging them to actively participate.
Despite these challenges, nature-based therapy holds great promise. It offers a natural, drug-free way to
improve our well-being. As more people become aware of its benefits, it is likely to become an important part of
our health and wellness.

Growing up by the river, I have a lot of good memories. Catching my first fish will always be the best
childhood memory that I have, because it started a tradition between my father and me.
It was a hot summer afternoon. My father was fishing with me by the river. He put down his fishing pole and
walked over to the far left side of the river and said, “Li Lei, look at this group of fish.”
I walked over and saw some little fish swimming around. I picked up a net that was next to me and tried to
catch the fish. Every time the net got close to a fish, it would swim away! They were too fast for my little arms to
keep up with. I tried again and again, but nothing worked. Then I saw a small fish. I slowly put the net around it,
and thankfully the fish didn’t move. Once I got close enough, I pulled the net out of the water. However, there was
just some weed(水草). I felt so disappointed.
“Li Lei, we should go back home now,” my father said. My father started to clean out the net.
“Li Lei, look here! You did catch a fish! It was just in the weed.” My father brought it to me. It was a very
small fish, a little bigger than my hand.
That year, I was five years old. From then on, my dad and I often fished together. Almost every afternoon
during the summer, we went fishing by the same river. It’s the small thing like this that makes the best memories.

“What is the meaning of life ” It is a question that I have asked myself many times over the years. The best
answer I ever came across was “The meaning of life is to give life meaning.”
When I was a young boy, I gave my life meaning by simply playing, running, swimming, laughing, and
riding my bike.
When I went to school, I gave my life meaning by learning, studying hard, getting good grades and trying to
make my mom and dad proud.
In college, I found meaning by deciding what I wanted to study and what career (职业) I wanted to prepare.
When I was working as a teacher, I found meaning by helping open young minds to new ideas and old
wisdom(智慧).
When I got married, I found meaning in protecting, providing for, and watching over my wife. And when I
found out that both of my sons were born with mental illnesses (精神疾病), I found meaning in loving them, caring
for them, and learning from them about love, patience (耐心), faith (信念), and joy.
As I got older, I began to realize that meaning isn’t something that comes and goes. We are responsible for
creating our own meaning. All we have to do is love ourselves and others. It is love that gives life meaning. It is
love that makes life worth living.

Just let me know if you need anything.”

so we didn’t ask earlier. But we really wanted you to come.” Sarah said and gave her a warm hug. The others
joined in, offering her snacks and making space for her to sit. Lily felt warm and comfort as she realized that her
sadness came from keeping her feelings inside. That day, Lily promised herself to always trust her friends and

My dad was a fisherman. He had his own boat, but it was hard to make a living on the sea. He would stay out
until he caught enough to feed the family.
He was a big and strong man. When you got close to him, he smelled like the sea.

Later we wanted to talk about popular but

are’t interested in, no missing a bus because your friend was late, etc.
2.What is the writer’s advice on traveling with friends
A.Live in different rooms. B.Choose those who think similarly to you.
C.Always follow their travel ideas. D.Eat out when traveling in developed countries.
3.When should people choose long group tours
A.If you’re a tour guide. B.If you’re a quiet person.
C.If it’s not easy to move around. D.If the daily food is not easy to get.
4.What advice does the writer give in the last paragraph
A.Always travel alone. B.Start with a one-week tour.
C.Mix your friends up in the tour. D.Try different ways of traveling.

Homestay is a form of study abroad programme. It allows the visitor to rent a room from a local family to
better understand the local lifestyle.
After we
got to London, we went to stay with different families. I was lucky that my host family(寄宿家庭) was a white
couple who had a daughter about my age.
The holiday was a valuable experience for me. I enjoyed every minute of it. Yet, time really flew fast. Three
weeks later, we had to leave “home” for Hong Kong.
