The Beijing Library in Beijing’s Tongzhou District opened to the public on December 27th, 2023. It offers people a modern and relaxing space to enjoy reading.
The Beijing Library covers an area of 75,000 square meters. It is the world’s largest and most intelligent (智能的) library, with a first-of-its-kind 21,809-square-metre open reading space. It won the Guinness World Record for the largest library hall and the largest outdoor reading space for children. The library is called “the forest of knowledge” because of the shape of its roof.
There are about eight million books in the library. It provides people with a relaxing space for reading and learning about the culture of Beijing. There are over seven million books in the underground intelligent stacks (书库). Robots can take the books to the reading area within 15 minutes. With the assistance of robots, people can easily get the book they want without having to search for it themselves.
Ms. Cheng lives in Tongzhou District. “I can’t wait to take my child to the library and I am happy that there is a good outdoor space for children in the library. For children, reading in such a beautiful library is really interesting. It’s a perfect place for life-long learning.” she said.
To welcome the readers, the library held a number of immersive (沉浸式的) activities on the opening day, including a concert, a traditional dress-up experience, and the creation of artistic works. When I was ten years old, I became a penfriend with David Lu, a boy living in Beijing. Over the years, I had become more and more interested in Chinese culture. When there was a chance to study in Beijing as an exchange student, I took it at once. In my first twenty-four hours in Beijing, I felt both excited and nervous. I didn’t see one foreigner. But on my first day of school, I was greeted by many foreign faces. The students came from all around the world. I would be in a class with Chelsea from Norway and Charlie from my motherland—the UK.
None of us had studied Chinese before, but our language skills improved quickly. By the end of the first month, we could all make simple sentences. Some of these sentences, though, were quite funny. We often sent our language teacher Sophie into wild laughter.
The first month was very tiring. There were so many new things to become familiar（熟悉）with. Thankfully, our school organized many student events. We talked a lot about cultural differences and our future plans. It was a great opportunity for us to practise speaking Chinese.

I ran from the dining room, threw myself on the bed and cried.
A few months later, I read that first poem. It was a bad poem. I worked up the courage to show him a short story. My father thought it was not good but hopeful. I was learning to rewrite.
As I worked my way into other books and plays and films, I realized how lucky I was to have a mother who said, “Buddy, its wonderful!” and a father who shook his head “I think it’s bad.” Both are love that forces me to improve. In fact, all of us in life need both loving force.
