One warm afternoon last spring, I was walking through a park in Putuo. At the corner of a grassy
field, a group of women in their late 50s caught my eye. With plastic bags hanging from their arms,
they moved slowly through the grass, searching for something. “What are they doing ” I wondered.
Curious, I walked over for a closer look. One of the women looked up and laughed, “See Wild
shepherd's purse(荠菜) !”
“Shepherd's purse Here in this park ” I asked, looking around in surprise.
“Ah, you young guys know nothing about this,” the woman replied. Then, she moved to a small
plant with toothed leaves just behind me. I looked at the plant and scratched (挠) my head. Maybe
she was right. Young people don't know much about any of this.
But who hasn't heard of this trend Every spring for the past several years, digging for wild
edible(可吃的) plants has been all over social media. However, many of us know little about these
plants. Take shepherd's purse, for example. I eat it almost every spring as part of my dumpling fillings.
But without much experience in cooking or shopping, I have no idea what my food looks like before
it's chopped(剁碎) and cooked
We aren't robots, and eating shouldn't feel like charging(充电) To make eating a truly human
experience, we need to roll up our sleeves(卷起袖子) sometimes. Instead of buying ready-to-cook
dumplings, we could buy some meat, shepherd's purse and dumpling skins, and learn to make those
dumplings by hand. What about digging for wild edible plants It could be a fun adventure, but I
think I’ ll find a guide before I get my hands dirty!

As humans, when there is natural light, we wake up, and at night we feel sleepy. This is called
the body's“day and night” cycle. Some chemicals in our body like melatonin (褪黑素 ), cortisol(皮
质醇 )and adenosine( 腺苷 ) control our body's rhythm. Melatonin for example increases with
darkness, and helps us fall into a deep sleep. Cortisol which rises sharply at daybreak causes us to
wake up. Adenosine which builds up during the daytime can make us feel tired and want to rest.
People all have different“day and night” cycles, while the cycle itself changes as we grow up.
When we’ re kids, we usually feel sleepy early. But when we become teenagers, our body changes.
Melatonin and cortisol start working later, and we feel sleepy 2 hours later than before. Since most
schools don't adapt to this change, and they still start early, teenagers end up sleeping less during
weekdays and more during weekends-a term known as social jet lag. And it may lead to all kinds of
problems.
When teenagers lack rest, their minds have trouble paying attention, and they often cannot
remember what they have learned during the day. Also, teenagers who don't get enough sleep may
become moody or fail to understand their own feelings. What's more, not getting enough sleep makes
teenagers feel stressed, and it may even cause anxiety or addiction. Sleep also affects our appetite.
Teenagers who don't sleep well at night may eat more during the day, which can make them put on

weight easily.
The solution could be simple: allow teenagers to sleep according to their natural body rhythm (
人体节律) . In the fall of 2023, a public school in China announced that it would change the school
starting time from 7:50 AM to 8:45 AM-to adapt to the body rhythm of teenagers. The result: On
average, pupils got more than 30 minutes of extra sleep every night. Later they showed higher
concentration levels, felt more satisfied and willing to learn. So, it's really important to let teenagers
sleep according to their body rhythm.

There are many things people have to do every day. For example, adults must go to work.
Children must go to school and do homework. And everyone must help around the house. 36 So

it's important to understand what motivates(激励) us.
Some think money will motivate people. Others might think rewards(奖励 ) are good. After
all, people like money and rewards. 37 When the money or rewards go away, the motivation is
gone,too.
38 First, giving people a purpose works well. A purpose is one's reason for doing things. An
adult's purpose for working could be because he or she believes the job is important. In the same way,
a student might study hard at school because he or she wants to get a certain job. A person who cannot
find a purpose for a certain job will not want to do it.
39 For example, being afraid of not getting a good grade may motivate a student to
study.Happiness will motivate people to continue doing things that make them happy. 40
If we can motivate ourselves through purpose and feelings, then our jobs will be more fun and
interesting.

六、书面表达(20 分)
For us middle school students, it's important to get on well with others. Good interpersonal
relationships not only make our school life happier, but also provide us with a better learning
environment.
I remember a time when I had a disagreement with a classmate over a math problem. We both
thought that we were right. After arguing for a few minutes, neither of us changed our mind. Then
we decided to discuss it calmly. We explained our own thoughts and listened to each other's thoughts.
In the end, we found a solution together and it made both of us happy. This experience made our
friendship stronger.
From this, I learned that communication and respect are key to good interpersonal relationships.
When we listen to and understand each other, we can solve problems and grow together.
