Hoping to carry on and grow the folk art,Ms Yu volunteers to teach at free community training sessions.Paper cutting is also taught in Ansai’s public schools.Ms Yu is aware of the need to go beyond protecting traditions and embrace new paper-cut experiments.

Theophilus Tetteh is an African contemporary artist from Ghana.He buried himself in the study of graphic design and painting at school while experimenting with different media themes.

Leonardo da Vinci experimented with chemicals while painting some of his representative works—including the Mona Lisa—forming a poisonous layer hidden beneath the celebrated artwork.Researchers studying a tiny ①microsample from a corner of the painting found a substance known as plumbonacrite(水白铅矿),a poisonous compound(化合物) formed when oil and lead(Ⅱ) oxide(氧化铅) are mixed together.
The Mona Lisa,and many other paintings from the Renaissance era in the early 1500s,were painted on wooden panels.These required a thick base layer to enable artists to create their works on top.The most common method was using a substance called gesso,which comes from plaster of Paris,but the presence of plumbonacrite suggests Da Vinci layered his painting with lead white paint,mixed with oil infused(泡) with lead(Ⅱ) oxide.
Writing in the Journal of the American Chemical Society,the authors said,“The most remarkable signature in the sample is the presence of plumbonacrite,a rare compound that is stable only in an alkaline(碱性的) environment.Leonardo probably attempted to prepare a thick paint suitable for covering the wooden panel of the Mona Lisa by treating the oil with a high load of lead(Ⅱ) oxide.”It is thought the lead(Ⅱ) oxide may have been used to help the paint applied on top of it to dry.
The team reviewed Da Vinci’s writing to find reference to his use of the chemicals,but found only “unclear references” to plumbonacrite.It seems once again the famous scholar was ahead of his time,with the technique only found in other paintings by Rembrandt in the 1600s.Use of plumbonacrite at the time seems to have been limited to skin and hair treatment.
In addition to the Mona Lisa analysis,the team used ②high-resolution analytic techniques on 17 samples from across the surface of the Last Supper and found it also contained the same poisonous base layer.

Landscape paintings of the 19th century displayed in London’s Tate Britain museum looked rather familiar to Anna Lea Albright,a climate researcher.Artist William Turner’s unique way of painting objects in foggy weather let Albright recall her early research on air pollution.
“I started wondering if there was a connection,” says Albright,who visited the museum on a day off from work.Turner—an English Romantic painter—was painting as increasing industrial plants earned London the name “The Big Smoke”.Turner’s early works were done with sharp details while later works had a dreamier aesthetic(美感).
To figure out to what extent Impressionists were reflecting the environmental conditions of that time,Albright partnered with ①climatologist Peter Huybers.They analyzed the contrast of 60 works created by Turner from 1796 to 1850 and 38 paintings by Monet between 1864 and 1901.It turned out that as the release of sulfur dioxide(二氧化硫) increased over time,the amount of contrast in both Turner’s and Monet’s paintings decreased.However,works set in Paris by Monet between 1864 and 1872 showed relatively higher contrast compared with Turner’s London-based works created 20 years earlier.This,Albright and Huybers say,can be due to the much slower start of the Industrial Revolution in France.
The researchers also analyzed the paintings’ visibility,or the distance at which an object can be clearly seen.Before 1830,the visibility in Turner’s paintings ②averaged about 25 kilometers while paintings after 1830 had the average visibility of about 10 kilometers.To strengthen their argument,the researchers also analyzed 18 paintings from four other London- and Paris-based Impressionists.Again,as outdoor air pollution increased,the contrast and visibility in the paintings decreased.
The researchers calculate that air pollution can explain about 61 percent of contrast differences between the paintings.In that respect,“different painters will paint in a similar way when the environment is similar,” Albright says.“But I don’t want to ③overstep the line and say:Oh,we can explain all of Impressionism.”
