For his eleventh birthday, Lin was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children’s Activity Centre and said he could choose any course that interested him. There was just one requirement: Lin would have to promise to study it for at least one year.
To that point Lin had had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Lin's artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, still unopened. This time Lin’s parents would let him decide.
Lin's eyes moved down the noticeboard that listed all the courses on offer. He stopped at "Photography". He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Lin's family weren't poor, they weren’t rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking.
The next course to catch his eye was "Language Art". He didn’t even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches. Lin, a shy boy, could think of nothing worse.
Then he saw it. "Cooking" sounded like something he'd like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient, it could be done alone and it was also creative.
Based on Lin’s hobby history, his dad had doubts, but he agreed. Much to his parents' surprise, Lin kept his promise. He studied cooking at the Centre every Saturday, and practised at home, making delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Lin got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others.
The months turned to years but his hobby never changed again.
Now Lin is an adult and runs a successful restaurant. When customers say they enjoy his meal, he still gets the same pleasure he did as a child, and remembers the special gift he received all those years ago.
31. Why didn't Lin choose to study photography
A. It was too expensive.
B. He had no interest in it.
C. He was not very creative.
D. It was not offered that term.

Many people go camping for fun. Camping can be enjoyed in the backyard or in the wilderness. Whether camping for one night or longer, being prepared is the key.
Endless fun
Once the tent, your base, is put up and the fire area is prepared, there is a lot to do. Fishing and hiking are just some of the fun activities. At night, campers often sit by the fire, talking and telling stories. If the weather turns rainy, campers usually wait it out in their tents, reading, drawing or playing games.
Required equipment
Shelter, bedclothes, food and water are necessary. Deciding what else you will need depends on the kind of camping trip you are planning and the length of your trip. Pack light if you are going to carry equipment any distance. Enough clothing should be prepared to protect against weather and insects. A hat, whistle, bug repellent (驱虫剂) and rope may come in handy. Don’t forget a flashlight, a compass, cookers and a first-aid box.
Various tents
There are many types and styles of tents. You should choose your tent based on your needs. If you are camping alone in the backyard, a simple lean-to or small tent may do. If you are camping with your family, a larger cabin tent or camping trailer may be best.
Proper locations
Where you decide to set up your campsite is very important. Look for a high and dry location if it rains. The ground should be level because hills and rocks are uncomfortable to sleep on. An exposure (接触) to sunlight in the morning with coolness in the afternoon is perfect.
________
Wherever you camp, it is important to respect the environment around you. If you are in a park, make sure to follow its rules. Put your garbage and waste in rubbish bins. If you are in the wilderness, speak in a low voice and do not disturb the plants or animals.
36. What do campers often do at night if the weather is good
A. Fish and hike. B. Read and draw.
C. Sit by the fire, talking and telling stories. D. Play games and use a compass.
37. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as necessary equipment for camping
A. Shelter. B. Bedclothes. C. A hat. D. A camera.
38. If a camper faces a strong wind, which kind of tents might be the best choice
A. Lean-to tents. B. Pup tents. C. Alpine tents. D. Dome tents.
39. Which of the following can be put in ________
A. Park rules B. Green camping C. Plant protectors D. Animal lovers
40. What is the purpose of the passage
A. To call on more people to take up camping.
B. To remind people to follow the rules of camping.
C. To offer some suggestions on how to prepare for camping.
D. To introduce the advantages-and disadvantages of camping.
D
Microplastics (微塑料) are increasingly entering our bodies through food and drink, leading to possible health risks. Scientists from Guangzhou Medical University and Jinan University have discovered a simple method to remove these tiny fragments (碎片) from water. Their study tested both soft and hard water, adding some microplastics to evaluate the effectiveness of boiling and filtering (过滤).
The researchers found that boiling and filtering can remove up to 90% of nano microplastics (NMPs), but the effectiveness is different based on the type of water. This method is very useful as it can be easily performed using common kitchen items. In hard water, which forms limescale (水垢) when heated, more NMPs were removed. The study showed that the effectiveness increases when water hardness is higher.
Even in soft water, about a quarter of the NMPs were removed. The lime-covered plastic pieces could be filtered out with a simple stainless steel mesh (不锈钢网) after soft water was boiled. The study suggests that drinking boiled water could be a feasible long-term method to reduce the intake (摄取量) of NMPs.
While the exact health risks of plastics are still uncertain, they have been connected to higher risks of certain diseases. The research team hopes that boiling water will become’ a more common practice to reduce the effects of microplastics. The study’s results prove a highly workable method to reduce human NMP exposure (暴露) and lay the base for further research.
41 What did the scientists from Guangzhou Medical University and Jinan University do
A. They found a way to add microplastics to water.
B. They evaluated the health risks of microplastics.
C. They studied the sources of microplastics in food and drink.
D. They found a method to take microplastics away from water.
42. What affects the effectiveness of removing NMPs when boiling
A. The type of kitchen item. B. The hardness of water.
C. The temperature of the lab. D. The number of NMPs added.
43. How were the plastic fragments removed in soft water
A. Soft water was cooled and later filtered with a special mesh.
B. A certain chemical was added to soft water to filter the fragments.
C. Soft water was boiled first and then filtered with a stainless steel mesh.
D. The plastic fragments in soft water were removed by boiling for some time.
44. What does the underlined word “feasible” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Possible. B. Difficult. C. Expensive. D. Interesting.
45. What do we know from the last paragraph
A. The health effects of microplastics have been found out clearly.
B. The research results offer a useful way to reduce human exposure to NMPs.
C. People needn’t worry about the negative influence of microplastics on health.
D. Boiling water is a widely used practice to reduce microplastics.

Dear Mike,
I’m glad that you’re interested in our school’s environmental protection activity last week. Let me tell you more about it.
Last Saturday morning, we set off at 8 o’clock to a local park for our “Protect Our Environment” activity. First, we did clean-up work by picking up litter around the park. Then we planted about 20 young trees to help make the air cleaner. After that, we promoted recycling by explaining to visitors how to separate waste properly. Many people showed great interest and promised to protect the environment.
Through this activity, I realized that even small actions can make a big difference to our city. If everyone does their part, Fuzhou will become even more beautiful. Why not organize a similar activity in your city too
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
